Argentina v Australia is not a match I could have predicted prior to the tournament as the second favourites face the undordogs in a fascinating clash. It is no surprise to see Argentina strongly fancied for this and it is obviously a match they will be fully expected to come through. The winner of this will face The Netherlands or USA in the quarter finals.

Argentina v Australia

Argentina have already suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia but did recover quite impressively beating Mexico and then Poland without conceding a single goal. Lionel Messi is set to dominate the headlines once more having scored twice in Qatar already. Argentina have now won 7 of their last 8 games without conceding a goal and the two they conceded against Saudi Arabia were just the third and fourth goals they have conceded in 12 games in 2022. This may well stay tight for much of the match but I expect the class of Argentina to come through eventually.

Australia also started their campaign with a heavy defeat at the hands of France but went on to beat Tunisia and Denmark by just a single goal each time to earn qualification. They were under heavy pressure at times against Tunisia but defended well which is why I think they might be able to frustrate Argentina initially here. Their issue will be trying to score as Argentina have arguably the best backline at this tournament and Australia don’t look to have the tools to damage them.
