Frankie Dettori ‘farewell tour’ will be huge for racing in 2023
Flat racing is very different because it’s not as dangerous as the jumps. I always wanted to go out on a good note because I didn’t want to retire down the road as there’s so much that can happen to a jumps jockey.
What Frankie is doing, going out on a grand tour, is going to be huge for flat racing during 2023.
Rachael Blackmore can replace Frankie Dettori as the face of British and Irish racing
Frankie Dettori will be a huge loss to flat racing because he’s a phenomenally good jockey and he’s a real character. Frankie has been the face of flat racing for the last 15 or 20 years and what he’s done for the sport has been unbelievable.
I think Rachael Blackmore can become the figurehead for British and Irish racing because she’s the face of racing at the moment and what she’s achieved is phenomenal for a female jockey.
The only thing that’s unlikely because she’s not attached to Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott is Rachael becoming Champion Jockey.
Davy Russell is right up there with all of the best jockeys in the game, he was flawless around Cheltenham and rode that track as well as anybody. I think he had a winner at every festival for ten or 12 years running, or maybe even longer which is a phenomenal achievement in itself.
The only surprise for me surrounding Davy’s career is that Gigginstown stopped using him as the number one jockey because he’s been one of the best jockeys in the business.
Envoi Allen is being ‘overlooked’ for King George success – he has a great chance of glory
Envoi Allen has a great chance of success there. He was very good when he won at Down Royal, he’s a horse with a lot of pace which you need around Kempton.
Bravemansgame is the deserved favourite, his form around Kempton is very good and he’s the one they all have to beat but I thought L’Homme Presse was very impressive at Newcastle. He’s not a big horse so to carry a big weight was very good. He won with plenty up his sleeve.
Envoi is an experienced campaigner, he had good runs over two miles last season, he was third in the Champion Chase, has plenty of pace and I think Kempton could play to his strengths. He’s definitely the overlooked horse in the King George.
A Plus Tard has plenty of questions to answer ahead of Leopardstown appearance
He seems fine and is in good form at home. I think Galvin has to bounce back from disappointment at Down Royal, he hasn’t won since Ayr’s Gold Cup so A Plus Tard and a few others have questions to answer. Hopefully, A Plus Tard can get back to showing what he was like last year, at Leopardstown.
At Kempton he just wasn’t 100% on the day and that showed so hopefully he can bounce back in the Saville’s. It’s a very competitive and there are a few horses that have got questions to answer.
I’m looking forward to seeing how ‘impressive’ Facile Vega handles tougher waters following winning maiden hurdle
I’m looking forward to seeing Facile Vega over Christmas. He was impressive when winning his maiden hurdle, I don’t think there was a lot of strength in depth in the race but you couldn’t have asked for a whole lot more from a horse making its hurdling debut.
It’ll be very interesting to see what he’s like when he steps into slightly rougher waters.
There is too much racing in England and not enough quality – I can’t understand why races can’t be moved elsewhere
I think there’s too much racing in England, it’s too diluted. If you had no jumps racing on a Monday or Tuesday you’d have much better quality racing later on in the week and it’d make for better prize money too.
I’m baffled as to why the Long Walk Hurdle couldn’t be moved to Kempton on Boxing Day, that would’ve added quality to the card so it makes no sense to me that they just scrapped those races and lost them.
Moving the Long Walk to Kempton would’ve made a lot of sense to me.
Racegoers should watch out for Mighty Potter and Gerri Colombe
I thought Mighty Potter has been good and I look forward to seeing him the next time he’s out. He was a decent hurdler and I think he’ll make for a much better chaser – he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
I also think I’ll be looking forward to seeing Gerri Colombe because he was very, very impressive when making his chasing debut at Fairyhouse earlier this season.
