World Number 12 Zverev needed 5 sets to get past Varillas in one of the longest matches of the night.
On the women’s side Mertens showed real battling qualities to come from behind and beat Muguruza. Giorgi was very impressive seeing off Pavlyuchenkova easily. Garcia, Sabalenka, Martic and Samsonova all cruised through to love. Jabeur was far from her best but eventually came through easily enough against Zidansek.
