Newmarket 1.50
This looks like a really deep renewal with plenty of these likely to have taken big jumps forward from 2 to 3. I give the edge to HI ROYAL who made his debut in a really good maiden at York which has worked out very well. He followed that up with a nice win at Ayr where he was eased down. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching jockey booking and I think he is the one to beat.
Majestic Pride is the main danger with Charlie Appleby starting the season in top form. He won nicely at Chelmsford at the back end of last year and has to be in the mix. Appleby also runs City Of Kings who has the form to go well if showing improvement but Buick has chose Majestic Pride so you would assume that is their best chance. At a massive price Think Climate has done some good figures on the clock and is Group 1 entered so could surprise a few here.
Favourites don’t really have a good record in this with quite a few upsets over the years. Eve-Johnson Houghton took it last year with Accidental Agent and I quite like REBEL TERRITORY at a price for Amanda Perrett. This son of Territories looked promising winning at Sandown on reappearance last year before being pitched into some decent contests. He didn’t shape badly on final start here and dropping back to 7f might really help him so he could surprise a few.
New Kingdom is the jolly for Appleby and he found plenty to win at Meydan when last seen in February. He might be more forward than most here but I think this is more competitive as his price is suggesting. If he disappoints it might leave Tacarib Bay as the main danger as he shaped better than the bare result in a Listed race at Doncaster last time.
Newmarket 3.00
In a wide open race OUTBREAK gets the vote at an each way price. He has fitness on eside after 4 runs this season already. The switch back to turf won’t be an issue for Charlie Johnston’s gelding who has been running on both surfaces already this year. The mile at Newmarket should suit and he carries a nice weight so I expect him to be bang there.
Unforgotten for the Gosden’s is likely going to be the favourite and you would expect a big run from him if mathing his all-weather form now switching to turf. Greatgadian will have a fair chance if the ground doesn’t dry out too much as his form is very much on a soft surface. Of the rest Harswell Duke will be in the mix if running to the level of his recent Doncaster win.
Newmarket 3.35
I have been waiting to see POKER FACE given the promise he showed as a 3yo last year winning all 3 starts nicely. He was particularly impressive up in trip at Pontefract on final start back in October and deserves a crack at Group company on return. The ground will be drying out all the time and he is an exciting prospect for the season ahead.
Appleby won this last year with Master Of The Seas and fires two bullets this year with perhaps Ottoman Fleet the best of them. He has been kept busy in Dubai over the winter and should give the selection most to think about given he has winning form at the track.
