Perth 1.30

A fairly open handicap to kick off the card at Perth with GINGER MAIL heading the market. He is definitely better at 2 miles after having a couple of goes over further. His last two runs would see him bang there in this race especially with first-time cheekpieces likely to bring out a little more improvement. He carries top weight but a mark of 119 could yet prove lenient and he is the one to beat.

Cuban Cigar looks the main danger after winning a nice handicap at Musselburgh last time. He is up 4lb for that but could still go close. Of the rest Inferno Sacree could bounce back on better ground after his run of wins ended last time out.

This race usually attracts a pretty decent field so to see just 5 line-up is a bit disappointing. Charlie Appleby has the favourite with Dubawi colt Local Dynasty. He has won 3 from 4 including over C&D on penultimate start so will be popular but I’m going to chance LEGEND OF LEROS. This colt was an eye-catcher on debut to finish fourth and improved to win at Doncaster in testing ground despite still looking quite raw. He is a scopey horse and looked to need the run on return at Kempton but should be spot on now and might surprise a few here.

Of the rest Saxon King showed a good attitude to prevail in deep ground at Haydock on final start as a 2yo and is another one that can do better this season. He lacks a run though and might just need this. Physique impressed at Newmarket but let backers down on return at the start of the month so has a bit to prove now handicapping. Metal Merchant was last on return and needs plenty more on that.

The Highland National is always a really competitive race and this year looks no different. One that I really like is DESTINY IS ALL for the Lucinda Russell yard. He clearly is an out and out stayer with his best runs coming at these longer trips. He only carries 11-2 here which appeals as I expect him to be a rated a fair bit higher after taking one of these big staying chases. He has got his preferred ground so there is no reason he can’t go well here.

Concetto looks like he wants further than he has been running at and rates a big danger. My only issue is that he still has to prove his stamina. Rath An Luir ran well behind the Scottish National winner earlier in the season and can be competitive over this shorter trip. At a slightly bigger price Planned Paradise has form over these longer trips to run a big race off 117.

Sandown 2.25

The Gordon Richards Stakes is a race that I have really enjoyed over the years with the likes of Al Kazeem, Noble Mission, Ulysses, Crystal Ocean and Arc winner Waldkonig winning it in recent times. Sadly it only attracted 3 runners last year where Mostahdaf justified cramped odds and we only have 4 this time around in a race where ADAYAR will be a warm order. He sprung a 16/1 surprise to win The Derby back in 2021 and also beat Mishriff in the King George. He made a winning return last year before going down narrowly to Bay Bridge in the Champion at Ascot and is expected to have too much for these rivals.

Anmaat does look the obvious danger having won 5 of his last 6. He showed a good attitude to win the John Smith’s Cup at York before winning impressively at Haydock and then coming out on top in a Group 2 in France. He will handle the ground and should run well but giving 5lb away looks a big ask. Regal Reality is quirky but talented and his trainer has a great record in this but you’d think he’ll need the younger pair to run below form to win.

Sandown 3.00

A really open renewal of the bet365 Mile with plenty of Group 2 horses heading the market. I am going to take them on with MIGRATION who looks a big price. He is a 7 year old which is rare for this race but he doesn’t have too many miles on the clock as he was out injured for nearly 2 years before coming back last season. He ran his best race so far when taking the Lincoln at the start of the month in similar conditions. He will be better for that run and could make his fitness count here.

There are dangers galore with the main one being Mutassaabeq who was second in this race last year but hasn’t had a prep run this time around. Light Infantry and Checkandchallenge both have the form to go close in this race but lack a prep run as well so I would rather take a bigger price on the selection with proven fitness in likely testing ground.

Sandown 3.35

Frankel colt ARREST was subject to strong support on debut and very much caught the eye staying on for third behind Nostrum. He improved to win his next two starts including at this track before missing by just a head in Group 1 company in France on final outing. The winner Dubai Mile is another exciting prospect having won 3 of his 5 starts so the form should work out well in time with them pulling 6 lengths clear from the rest. He handled heavy ground with ease that day so conditions won’t be an issue and with further improvement to come he should make a winning return under Frankie Dettori.

Flying Honours won 3 from 5 as a 2yo and likely has more to come as well so looks the danger for Appleby and Buick. Salt Bay made a bright start winning at Haydock on debut despite running green and then was far from disgraced at the top level in France on final start so is another one not to dismiss lightly.
