Punchestown 2.35
A fiercely competitive Cross Country race to kick off the final day at the Punchestown Festival and I’m siding with THREE BY TWO who was seen beating Vital Island here earlier in the week. That horse won on Thursday to frank the form and if coping with the quick turnaround should get the job done here. He stayed on strongly on Tuesday and a repeat of that would make him the one to beat here as the market is suggesting.
Stealthy Tom looked well held before rallying bravely to chase home Vital Island on Thursday and so on collateral form looks the biggest danger. Birchdale has been pulled up the last twice but if rejuvenated by this unique test he certainly has the class to win this so that alone makes him interesting.
This is a tough renewal to get a grasp of with most of these having questions to answer coming into it. MY DESIGN has been in great form over a variety of trips but ran his best race last time when stepped up to 3 and a half miles on soft ground. He could well improve again over this longer trip and it will likely pay to have one on side who is in good form.
Mercury Lane carrying just 10 stone 1 could be very interesting stepping up to this trip and I think he could be a big danger in an open renewal. Of the rest Sir Bob and Aione wouldn’t surprise me if they went well along with popular Grand National runner Velvet Elvis who would need to bounce back.
Punchestown 3.50
The highest rated mare in the field LOVE ENVOI can cap off another great season with victory in this. She went down on her sword to Honeysuckle at the Cheltenham Festival last month and the pair pulled over 4 lengths clear of the remainder. Back slightly in trip here she should be awfully hard to beat if running to that sort of level again. Danny Mullins gets the leg up and it is no surprise to see her top the betting.
Echoes In Rain was given quite a bit to do at Cheltenham last month but did some good late work to finish fourth behind the selection. She has won at this track before and might be capable of reversing that form with Queens Brook and emerging as the main danger. Brandy Love also ties in with that form and might be capable of an improved display.
Punchestown 4.25
I didn’t think RAMILLIES went in the right race at Cheltenham as they went way too quick for him and he had to pull up. This should be more his bag and I think he can bounce back. He has good form over fences with a win to start the season followed by a second behind Thedevilscoachman who franked that form winning a Grade 3 on his next start. He seems to have a nice weight and I think he will be the one to beat.
Dan Skelton sends Flegmatik over after a really good run behind Our Power losing out by a neck. He is likely still well handicapped of just 2lb higher and rates the danger. Of the rest Ballykeel at a bigger price could be the one to chase the two mentioned home.
Punchestown 5.00
Hard to look past LOSSIEMOUTH following that dominant success at the Cheltenham Festival last month. She readily reversed form with Gala Marceau and is expected to come out on top once more here. She has won 3 from 4 under Rules and would only have to repeat that last performance to add another win to her CV.
Gala Marceau is proving mega consistent and she is the obvious one to make a race of it with the favourite. Zarak The Brave won impressively at Fairyhouse before finding the selection 4 lengths too strong when last seen so he could go well too but strictly looks held on what we’ve seen from him so far.
Punchestown 5.30
This is one of the best races on the card with Cheltenham handicap form on show throughout. AN EPIC SONG really improved for the step up to this trip when just losing by a head in the Coral Cup. He really caught the eye when he travelled into the race with ease which leaves me thinking there is a lot more to come from Martin Brassil’s 6 years old. His trainer already won a big race this week and with form over this course and distance already he is the one to beat.
Seddon is the main danger after he took the Plate at Cheltenham in impressive fashion. He is up in the weights but could easily add another win to his run (3 wins in a row). Ballyadam was tipped up before his run at the Festival where he finished a decent fifth. He gets 5lb taken off by his claimer and he is another one that might surprise a few in here.
Punchestown 6.05
Like most bumpers this is a bit of a guessing game and I’m going to chance BARONS REVENGE making a winning start for Willie Mullins. He is well related and the yard certainly know how to target these types of races so hopefully he runs a nice race. He isn’t the first string on jockey bookings but I wouldn’t let that put me off too much.
Stablemate Sorrentino has Patrick Mullins jocked up and he is a half-brother to 3 winners on the Flat so shouldn’t lack the speed for this. If he sees it out well then he is the likely danger. Rainbow Trail cost £220,000 as a 4yo and got within half a length of victory in a point back in December last year. He is also likely to be well primed for this.
Punchestown 6.40
A charity race to conclude the action from the Punchestown Festival and a tentative vote goes to STUZZIKINI for Gordon Elliott. This 5yo by Champs Elysees finally made the breakthrough at Kilbeggan last time and now the penny has dropped should have a good chance of following up here. I can see this test suiting and with Paul Bell getting the leg up he should go well in what is obviously a very open race.
Hell Bent is favourite at the time of writing and probably the one to beat for Jessica Harrington. He impressed at Cork when last seen back in the summer and if fit enough for this should run well. Dalton Highway and Jungle Cove are others to note.
