Musselburgh 3.45

The Sunday Series kicks off with a very competitive sprint with JM JUNGLE catching the eye after a good comeback run last week. He finished third by just under two lengths over this trip at Thirsk last week and I think he will come on for the run. His form last season was solid over 6 furlongs but some of his best runs have come at this trip and he should be bang there at the finish.

There are a few dangers with the main one being Girl Magic who is rarely far away at this sprint distances. She ran well on her first run of the season and I would expect her to go well here. Jer Batt is favourite at the time of writing and while I think he is better on the all-weather he can’t be ignored on turf. Of the rest Winter Crown could have plenty of scope for improvement and run a big race as well.

Another tricky race where any of 3 or 4 could win but I do like the chances of MYCONIAN for Amy Murphy. He made a winning start over in France and really knuckled down well that day. He looked potentially vulnerable from The Fixer but seemed to relish the fight and forged clear again at the line. That was in testing ground so if handling this better surface should have a great chance to make it 2-2. East Bank also made a bright start winning on debut at Beverley and could be the danger. That did come just 11 days ago though so he needs to handle the quick turnaround.

Love Billy Boy is an intriguing debutant for Richard Hannon but unless the market speaks significantly for him I think he’ll do better for the experience. Blue Prince shaped with promise in a race working out well here on debut so is another one to note.

This looks like a really tough race to call with the improvers at the head of the market with runs under their belts and the ones with the best form in the book likely needing the run. I am going with the improving CHEALAMY who I really think has a lot more to come at a mile and beyond. She ran really well on her seasonal reappearance at a mile for the first time. She was second behind a race-fit rival and if she improves for that run she must be in the mix here.

Elim is the biggest danger of the improvers with form of 221 in maidens and should figure on her handicap debut. Ana Gold has some of the best mile form in the book but hasn’t run since September so might just need this. If Vindobala runs to her all-weather form she could be well overpriced if transferring that to turf.

This is definitely the most competitive race of the day and I’m going to take a chance on MUZAFFAR at around 16/1 at the time of writing. This son of Almanzor ran on strongly to win at Southwell back in February. That was just his second start in a handicap so it was a likeable effort. He has been beaten twice since but only missed just over a length at Newcastle and then had excuses last time. If bouncing back a mark of 77 could still be well within reach.

Dark Mystery could be the danger having undergone wind surgery since last seen. That form beating Novel Legend at Newbury last year was very decent so if back to his best could well be a threat to all. Arrange was running well when last seen and she has won fresh before so she is another one I expect to be involved in a wide open race.

The bookies go 9/2 the field in this 11-runner race which shows how competitive it is. GINCIDENT looks a good each way play with some great form over a mile already this year. He ran into a smart Charlie Johnston horse last time over course and distance. If he runs to that level of form again here he will go well.

Charlie Johnston could be providing the chief danger again with Urban Sprawl returning to the track for the first time since September. The step up in trip looks ideal and could prove a threat to all. Out of the shadows and Spioradalta look best of the rest in a hot race.

Richard Fahey has quite a strong team heading to Musselburgh on Sunday and MAYWAKE looks one of his best chances on the day. This good looking chestnut was back to form closing fast for third at Redcar on return earlier in the month. He just had to wait for a gap but once switched right came home well and was nearest finish with the right two horses in front. Fitter now he is a major player.

Walking On Clouds has been hugely consistent on the AW over the winter and was still in form despite only finishing seventh at Lingfield last time beaten just a length. If this is run to suit he could be the danger. Gioia Cieca has been tumbling down the weights for a while and finally showed something when third last time so is also feared.

Maximum field of 17 likely to line up for this sprint handicap with the bookies going 8/1 the field. The tentative vote goes to MONSIEUR KODI who shows signs he improved over the winter with a nice win on his return to the track. That was over course and distance and he only got a 4lb penalty for that win. He should strip fitter for the run and looks a good each-way bet.

Rock Melody wasn’t far behind the selection in fourth and didn’t get a clear run. She looks the main danger with a swing at the weights but just needs a little more luck in running. Of the rest Dun Na Sead and Lullaby Bay have the form to go well in back at their best.
