Newmarket 1.15

This looks a really open renewal of a race that has produced some future stars. One or two of these have potential but do need to step forward to reach those heights. CASTLE WAY took a massive leap forward when stepping up to this trip over course and distance last season. Charlie Appleby won this last year and he looks to have a decent chance with this progressive colt.

Salt Bay looks the main danger after running a cracker to finish third in the Group 1 Criterium Stakes. If he improves for the step up to this trip he has to be a threat to all. Victory Dance gives Appleby another live chance here with decent Group form to his name. Like A Tiger has fitness onside and could make the frame.

Not much form to go on here so it might pay to back ETHANDUN to make a winning start for Eve Johnson Houghton. This Saxon Warrior colt is bred to be smart and with the yard having made a promising start to the season he could be the answer. He is clear fav at the time of writing and like always in these types of races the betting will likely prove informative.

Dubai Hills showed ability on debut to finish second in France and could be the danger but he was beaten nearly 5 lengths so will need to leave that bare form behind. Vitarli showed a good attitude to open her account at Beverley but this could be a much stronger contest.

Just the 5 runners for the mile this year but it is a classy field. Last season NATIVE TRAIL flourished at this time of year with a close second in the 2000 Guineas and then he went on to win the Irish version at the Curragh. He stepped up to 10 furlongs after that and it didn’t seem to suit. Back at a mile after a wind-op he has to be the one to beat as the market is suggesting.

Light Infantry finished behind the selection in the 2000 Guineas but could get closer based on his run at Deauville running Inspiral close. Mutasaabeq for Charlie Hills should be best of the rest after capping off last season with a nice win over course and distance.

Goodwood 2.05

The unexposed TIME LOCK looks the one to beat in the Listed race at Goodwood on Friday. I was at York when she was denied just a neck by Haskoy and that was a big run in defeat. She was arguably going better than anything at the furlong pole and came clear with the winner in the closing stages. That filly was beaten less than 3 lengths in the St Leger next start so that gave plenty of substance to the form.

Thanks Monica improved to open her account at Salisbury last season and then followed up impressively at Leicester. She was beaten twice after that but her form stacks up so she looks the danger. Voodoo Queen might have more to offer as a 4yo and is also noted.

Charlie Appleby unleashed the classy Noble Truth in this race last year and MAJESTIC PRIDE could prove to be another Group horse in the making. He is unlucky not to be unbeaten after running really green on debut finishing second. He has won his last two in decent races including a recent win over course and distance. If he is better for the run he should go close.

Shouldvebeenaring is a danger with plenty of experience already in the book most of which would see him go well at this level. I am just not sure he has the scope for improvement as the selection.

Goodwood 2.35

This is a fiercely competitive renewal as the betting is suggesting but I thought PROP FORWARD stood out as being a bit overpriced. He won 2 from 4 as a 3yo and then made a winning return at Southwell showing a smart turf of foot to quickly settle matters. He clearly hasn’t been the easiest to train as we didn’t see him again until the summer where he ran a very nice race to chase home Nationwide and Ayr Harbour which is solid enough form. He looked better than ever winning on return at Kempton last month and up 4lb with more to come yet he may well follow up here.

Reigning Profit arrives on a hat-trick but both those wins came at Pontefract and he will find this tougher. Dream Composer impressed winning at Newmarket last month and he might even emerge as the main danger despite a career-high mark.

Newmarket 3.00

In an open race it is worth taking a chance on BASS PLAYER each way. He is back from a break after a wind-op but it is his form at the track that catches the eye. He ran well here in a Group 3 before just losing out by a neck in a handicap at the July course. That form would see him go well in a race that lacks obvious quality.

Final Watch had a nice prep run over course and distance and rates the main danger if coming on from the run. Star Of Orion went close over course and distance in August and has been dropped a few pounds since so might well feature here.

Newmarket 3.00

Bass Player 7/1 each way

Newmarket 3.35

This is a really tricky race to try and workout mainly because HURRICANE LANE was so disappointing on reappearance. He obviously ended last year disappointingly blowing out in France and then folded tamely at Newbury last month. He is still the class act in this field though and if bouncing back would win this easily. I have tried to get him beat but none of the other rivals have convincing profiles either so 7/4 could end up looking generous.

West Wind Blows impressed last season winning 3 times but he still needs to prove he can stay this far and I’m not hugely convinced. If he does he would have sound claims but he is favourite and for me looks too short. Global Storm has been nibbled at but he was really poor in Dubai on final start and also arrives with enough to prove.
