Newmarket 1.50
This race is as open as it gets with so many of these weighted for big runs. HMS PRESIDENT gets a tentative vote at a nice each way price. He has ran some massive races over this trip over the last year going close on so many occasions. He is just a tad unlucky with 4 seconds in his last 5 starts. He has had a prep run so may have the edge on some of these and it could well be his day to get his head in front.
Halic comes into this with form of 112 and carrying just 8 stone 6 he will be a big danger. Last years winner Cemhaan will have to run a career best to retain his crown off 9lb higher this year. Firstman has been backed into favouritism and with Buick up could also be capable of going close.
Hamilton 2.05
Another tricky race but it is hard not to admire the consistency of PONS AELIUS and if this Galileo colt can build on that close third at Ripon then he will be a danger to all here under Franny Norton. He was only beaten half a length last time and gets to run off the same mark so at around 13/2 looks a knocking each way play.
Postileo is fav at the time of writing but he hasn’t been seen for 562 days so you are taking his wellbeing on trust. Good Show is by Nathaniel so should continue to progress and he is unexposed so another one to be fearful of in this despite running below form on return.
Newmarket 2.25
On paper it doesn’t look the best renewal of the Pretty Polly and I quite like RUNNING LION stepping up in trip for the first time. She won with a bit to spare over a mile at Kempton on her comeback run to make it 3 wins in a row. The extra couple of furlongs could see her in an even better light and she should make her mark at Group level.
Queen Of Fairies made a bright start winning on debut at Southwell. She’ll need to leave that bare form behind to win this but she is with top connections and shouldn’t be underestimated. Floating Spirit is 2-2 and is another one who brings potential to the table in a decent looking renewal.
Salisbury 2.40
Dubawi colt MR INSPIRATION has won 2 of his last 4 starts and the way he rallied to get back up at Lingfield last month was really likeable. That form has been franked since with the runner-up Sausalito winning well next time out. He is up 4lb but with more to come should follow up and looks decent value at around 3/1. Sir Rumi was back to his best winning at Epsom last month and if repeating that will be bang there but he has lacked consistency in the past which would be a bit concerning.
Wandering Rocks is plenty talented but I think it is pretty obvious he isn’t straightforward. If he comes on for that reappearance run he may well get involved so don’t easily underestimate. Whimsy finished last at Lingfield last month and a big bounce back is called for if she is going to get involved in this as it looks a pretty good race.
Newmarket 3.00
Godolphin and Shadwell with a strong hand here but I am going to side with VIA SISTINA at a price. This mare by Fastnet Rock ran a cracker on stable debut to get within a neck of victory here and then improved again to win over in France when last seen back in November last year. She clearly goes well fresh and with the yard firing she could be decent value in an open looking renewal.
Of the market principals With The Moonlight would be the biggest danger. She is by Frankel and her form is hard to knock having won twice in Dubai before bumping into In Italian Stateside when last seen last month. That is solid form and if the travelling doesn’t catch up she is definitely dangerous.
Newmarket 3.40
Unbeaten filly TAHIYRA could be a special horse and while the absence is a little concerning I think the fact Dermot Weld is running her could turn out to be a tip in itself. He admitted she got a bit behind with her work but he said she has really come into her own in recent weeks and with further improvement to come she should confirm that form with Mediate and win this well. I have high hopes for her this season so fingers crossed.
Meditate is a seriously talented filly herself and she might end up being the one to chase the favourite home again. She won at Keeneland when last seen at the Breeders’ Cup and is clearly plenty talented. Mammas Girl was impressive winning here on return but she needs to prove she can be as effective over an extra furlong.
