The Lily Agnes is always fast and furious and it is a race I look forward to every year on the Roodee! It is usually won by a horse at or near the top of the betting and I like the chances of ZIGGY’S DREAM for Alice Haynes. The yard have been going through a purple patch of late and this speedy filly lived up to market expectations to make a winning debut at Doncaster. What I liked about that performance was how quick she was into stride and that could count for plenty around this track. If she gets away quick they might not see which way she goes.
Ziggy’s Phoenix was beaten just a length on debut and then improved to open her account in good style at Ripon last month. She has more to come and an inside alley has earned her favouritism. Balon D’or showed a good attitude to prevail on debut at Musselburgh and that form has already worked out with the second and fourth both winning next time out.
The progressive JER BATT escapes a penalty for that latest win at Musselburgh and given his form stacks up even though this is tougher he may well prove up to the task. He has good early speed which should mean he is always well positioned here and at this track that can be the difference between winning and losing. That last run did only come 10 days ago but he seems to be thriving on his racing and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t go close at the very least.
Seantrabh ended his 2yo campaign with a nice win at Catterick and ran an eye-catching race when fourth to Democracy Dilemma at Thirsk last month. That should leave him spot on for this and I expect him to emerge as the danger. Squealer is also worth a mention as he won at York and Beverley before finishing midfield up to Group level last time. This is easiest he definitely has a squeak.
Chester 2.40
Aidan O’Brien has a really good record in the Cheshire Oaks and he has won 2 of the last 4 renewals with Magic Wand and last year with Thoughts Of June. He is represented this time around by SAVETHELASTDANCE and she is expected to prove really tough to beat. This Galileo filly was too raw to do herself justice on sole start as a 2yo but came into her own up in trip at Leopardstown last month and ran out an impressive winner. She is only going to improve as her stamina is drawn out and she can take this en route to the Oaks.
Ralph Beckett is represented by Lope De Vega filly Luckin Brew and she stayed on nicely to open her account at Kempton towards the backend of last season. She was beaten on final start but by Local Dynasty who could be a very nice colt for Charlie Appleby. If she is forward enough on return she could be the danger. Ashtanga also looks to have a bright future and could get competitive as long as she doesn’t need the run.
Chester 3.15
I have been waiting for ARREST to run as we was meant to see him at Sandown but that ended up getting rained off. This is an easier task truth be told and I think he could be a colt to follow for the season ahead. He won 2 from 4 as a 2yo and that head defeat to Dubai Mile looks a strong piece of form with that horse running a decent race in the Guineas. The pair had Adelaide River well held 6 lengths behind in third so I expect him to confirm that form with that rival here.
The other one to note is Hadrianus and I actually think he’ll be the one to make a race of it but ultimately still come up short. He is by Galileo and ran a nice race on return at Epsom going down less than a length to Epictetus. He needs to improve on that to spring an upset here but clearly is a work in progress and should acquit himself well hopefully in defeat.
Chester 3.45
I’m really looking forward to seeing Night Of Thunder filly ROYAL DRESS at Chester on Wednesday. She improved to make all at Doncaster on return last month and I loved the way she asserted in the closing stages. That was in soft ground and with showers in the forecast conditions could be perfect here as she bids to follow up. Ryan Moore gets the leg up now and a mark of 80 now handicapping may well prove lenient.
California Gem was busy as a 2yo but ran well enough on return to think she could be a player here around this tight track. Lakota Blue left his reappearance run well behind to win at Ripon and given that came in soft ground that form brings him into this as well. Kessaar Power is on a hat-trick but another 4lb rise in a tougher race will definitely demand more.
Chester 4.20
Not a great deal of form to go on but given VAGUELY ROYAL is bred to be smart if he improves on that debut run where he finished third at Yarmouth last year he could be a lovely prospect in the making. He just looked green that day but the fact we haven’t seen him since suggests he needed a fair bit of time to come to hand. If he is more streetwise here he could make a winning return before going on to better things.
The market is probably right and grey colt Shadow Dance is the danger. He is by Almanzor and was only beaten a length and a quarter on debut at Windsor last month. He will have fitness on side and should run well. Sea The Moon colt Lunatick showed promise last time and he is another one to note but there could be one or two really nice prospects in here.
Chester 4.55
No surprise to see PAWS FOR THOUGHT favourite for this as he is a course regular and made a winning reappearance fresh a couple of years ago. He only missed a short head last year and off a 3lb lower mark this time around he will have plenty of supporters. He runs in cheekpieces again and under likely aggressive tactics he might just take a bit of catching.
Quite a few dangers as it is a competitive race probably headed by Broken Spear who has already had 4 starts this season and ran a cracker at Leicester beaten just a neck. Back up to 7f could see him right in the mix. Another Batt would also have a squeak if getting a clear run through.
