Ascot 1.30

I’m keen to side with SAVVY KNIGHT in this as I thought he was a big eye-catcher on return at Kempton last month. This son of Caravaggio was only beaten a little over a length at the line but was closing nicely and looked as though he’d come on plenty for the outing. He was held up and got caught wide too so plenty went wrong but there was enough encouragement to make him a decent bet in this. He is running off the same mark here back on turf and must be of interest with Harry Davies decent value for his 3lb claim.

Nathanael Greene did well last season and ran a big race in defeat when fourth to Post Impressionist at York towards the end of last year. He failed to fire at Doncaster but that came in deep ground and off since he will be a big danger on return. Sir Rumi is also feared with race fitness on side and a nice win at Epsom last month.

Lingfield (AW) 1.50

A really condensed handicap to kick off the card at Lingfield on trials day. WINFORGLORY gets a tentative vote after going very close on his second run back from a break. He has been running over further but clearly looks best on this surface over 7 furlongs or a mile. That was only his third handicap run and based on that he should be better than his mark of 77 and go close for Buick and Hughes.

Gold Medal comes here on a hat-trick at the track after two wins over 6 furlongs. If he can see out the extra furlong he has to be a player. Oisin Murphy riding Archie Watson’s Sharvara catches the eye and based on his two narrow defeats at this trip is likely a big players as well. Of the rest Prenup and Otago have the form to get well here.

The money is really coming for TIMELESS MELODY and the feeling is she could be quite a nice filly. She ran a cracker on second start for Charlie Appleby getting within a length of the useful Hello Jumeirah and then switched hands and made a winning stable debut for Haggas. She relished the testing ground on that occasion and everything looks in place for another big run now sent handicapping.

Belhaven impressed winning at Nottingham and even up 7lb could acquit herself well here. Mountain Song won at Southwell last time and with further improvement to come is another one that could get involved.

Lingfield (AW) 2.25

A really open renewal of the fillies’ stakes with SANDRINE just about getting the vote on her seasonal reappearance. She ran a cracker on her first run last year in the 1,000 Guineas and this looks at easier starting point. She was last seen running in the Group 1 at Longchamp where the ground was a too soft for her. Her form prior to that would see her go very close here and I think she is the one to beat.

Sacred is the biggest danger if at her best but I just find her hard to catch right and the selection has the edge based on last seasons form. Queen Aminatu is improving all the time despite the blip at the Curragh 2 weeks ago. She is likely best of the rest as she goes well on the all-weather.

Ascot 2.40

The Victoria Cup always takes a bit of winning and I usually fire a few darts but this year I really like TOTALLY CHARMING and I’m happy to play just one horse in the race. He was seriously progressive last season and I thought there was plenty of encouragement in his reappearance run at the Curragh to make him a big player here. He will appreciate dropping back in trip and the testing ground is also in his favour. Billy Loughnane takes off a valuable 3lb and he ticks a lot of boxes.

Kingdom Come would be the most interesting in the opposition but he needs to prove himself in the conditions. If he does then he could be a big player even with another 7lb rise. Baradar is as strong traveller and he is another one that must enter calculations.

Lingfield (AW) 3.00

The market looks to have this spot on with BE HAPPY the favourite followed by the improving Eternal Hope. Be Happy started the season with a big run in France behind a very useful winner in Pensee Du Jour who I think we will hear a lot more about this season. It was a solid run to start the season and likely leaves her spot on for this race. She looked to have improved a lot for the step-up in trip and I think she is the one they all have to beat over this extra couple of furlongs.

Eternal Hope is the main danger with the way she beat well fancied stablemate Mountain Song who has won easily since. She was going away at the line that day and with the expected improvement has to be a player. Bright Diamond has the best form over a mile but she needs to prove she stays, if she does she will be competitive here. Of the rest Sunset Point looks a stayer in the making and could run a big race.

Haydock 3.15

The hat-trick seeking BRENTFORD HOPE should prove tough to beat in the Swinton at Haydock on Saturday. He did well on the Flat and really impressed at Huntingdon last month making it 2-2 since switching to Harry Derham. He can keep improving for a while yet and it is no surprise to see the market already speaking favourably about his chance.

The danger would have to be Teddy Blue having got back to winning ways at Plumpton last time. He was all out and is up 4lb but is likeable and as long as he doesn’t burn himself out too early he should run well. Byker is another one likely to get seriously involved.

Brentford Hope 5/1

Lingfield (AW) 3.35

I don’t think this trial for the Derby is that deep with MILITARY ORDER looking a solid bet at the top of the market. He looked useful as a 2 year old but his win to start this season was impressive. He was up in trip for the first time and won with plenty up his sleeve from the front. He will likely prove even better at this trip and you can see why he is near the top of the Derby betting and should take this if one of the others doesn’t show significant improvement.

Circle Of Fire is interesting backing up a good run at Newmarket just a week later. I think that race will work out well and he will prove a danger in this if recovering from that run. John Gosden has a good record in Derby trials and Inquiring Minds was an impressive winner on his debut. He lacks a bit of experience but really could be anything after that easy win and is worth a check in the betting.
