Hamilton 3.45

This has to be one of the bigger pots for a maiden this season but it has sadly only attracted 5 runners (possibly 4 with Golden Arrow entered in multiple races). Someone has to win it though and MOONSTONE BOY has the form in the book to take this race. He has run twice at at Musselburgh with a third on debut and a close second on his last run 2 weeks ago. The time figures look smart and with a repeat of his last run he should go very close here.

With Golden Arrow entered at Ascot on Saturday I think Golden Mind is likely the main danger for Richard Fahey. Looks nicely bred and you would expect him to be close to full fitness for this. Irish Nectar for the Kevin Ryan yard is the outsider of the field at the time of writing but is worth noting in the betting as the yard are very good at winning on debut. The filly Kandy House ran a creditable third on debut but will need to improve to win this.

Another competitive race which is the story of the day. I like MOUNTAIN WARRIOR for Ed Bethell. He improved to make a winning return at Southwell and now stepping into handicap company he should have more to offer so no surprise to see him go and follow up. Callum Rodriguez can give frustrating rides from time to time but if he is in the right position then he should have every chance.

Quintus Arrius stepped forward to win at Newcastle and then only missed a short head at Pontefract. He clearly has a bit more to come so looks the danger. At a bigger price Kelpie Grey ran well when second at Ayr last time and as long as this doesn’t come too soon he could also get competitive.

In a really open handicap I think MY LITTLE QUEENS is a bigger price than she should be based on her solid handicap form. She started the season with a really nice win at Chelmsford before bumping into a potentially smart improver at Doncaster. She is never far away in handicaps and I did expect her to be vying for favouritism and she should run well.

Graces Quest at a massive price could even end up being the danger. She would have needed the run on return at Ayr and wasn’t beaten far. She won third up last season so if she comes on for that racing off the same mark she might surprise a few. Of the rest Nigwa is an obvious threat to all given she is unexposed.

A drop in grade did the trick for ON A SESSION at Musselburgh last month and if in the same form here he remains well treated on old form. He should appreciate going back up in trip and any rain won’t hinder his chance. He is around 7/1 in the betting and looks a very solid each way play in another open race.

Pisanello is a consistent operator and he ran well when second at Thirsk on return. If they go a good gallop he should threaten. Shaladar has won over track and trip in the past and is another one to note but does look off a stiff enough mark on the balance of his form.

Usually it is hard to be bullish in a sprint handicap but SPOOF has really caught the eye over the last month or so. He has improved over a stone since making his comeback and has form of 2311. He comes here on a hat-trick after easy wins and Windsor and Ascot and with top talent Billy Loughnane taking 3lb off his back he only carries 3lb more here and is surely the one to beat.

The Thin Blue Line put his comeback run behind him to get his head in front at Musselburgh last time out and could have more to come here now fully fit. Ramon Di Loria likely needed the run last time out and back down to a mark of 73 he could be a danger at a big price.

The way CAPTAIN HADDOCK finished off his race on reappearance at Doncaster last month was eye-catching and if he builds on that up in trip off the same mark with Billy Loughnane booked he is going to go close. He was pretty consistent last season without getting his head in front and deserves a prize like this now. He will likely be ridden quietly again so will require some luck when coming through late but he has a decent young pilot and he could be value even though he is vying for favouritism at around 11/2.

Mister Camacho won emphatically at Catterick last month but a 7lb rise is going to demand more in a competitive race. Ravenscraig Castle shaped with plenty of encouragement when second on return and is another big player if stepping forward from that now.

Hamilton 6.45

This is a really competitive race with most of these hard to rule out so an each way play on DON’T LOOK BACK looks a solid option. Back on the Flat he has a really nice win to his name plus a close second last week over course and distance. I think he could be well handicapped at these middle to staying trips and if in the same form as last week he has to be in the mix here.

Faylaq made a very good seasonal reappearance at the track last week and will be a player if building on that but my only worry with him is being vulnerable carrying top weight. Derry Lad and Croeso Cymraeg could prove best of the rest based on their recent runs in what looks a very good race.
