York 1.50

A tricky looking opener at York with 14 heading to post but ILLUSIONIST must represent decent each way value. This 6yo won over course and distance this time last year and has been lightly raced since. Grant Tuer’s gelding only carries 2lb more here and after a decent prep run at Ripon he should be spot on for this. Carrying just 8 stone 9lb he has to be a major player.

Copper Knight has won this twice in the last 3 years but has been on a losing run and as a result has dropped down the handicap so may well threaten again back at this track. Whenthedealinsdone looks a potential improver for Roger Teal and is possibly the main danger along with Korker who looks like he has the class for better races and could go well off a mark of 100.

Salisbury 2.05

The way JUNIPER BERRIES won on debut at Bath was impressive and the form has already worked out well with the third Beenham and fourth Heed The Call both winning next time out. That visual impression was backed up by the clock too and if she improves again which she should then she really should be making it 2-2 here.

Relief Rally also made a bright start winning on debut at Windsor running on well. She could do better and is the danger but the form hasn’t worked out as well yet and she will encounter difference ground here. Unbreak My Heart the most interesting of the two debutants.

Salisbury 2.05

Juniper Berries 11/10

York 2.25

We have all been waiting for FREE WIND to return to the track after an eye-catching win in the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock. She was blocked off so badly that day and had to circle the field yet she still won going away. She doesn’t seem the easiest to keep fit with that run her only run last season but she is clearly a classy mare with form of 112111. The Gosden’s have a great record in this race and if anywhere near her best she should take this comfortably.

Aristia is interesting with Group 1 form to her name and will be the danger in here. Her Group 1 form is good but doesn’t look the best quality and could be vulnerable to the selection who looks a potential top Group 1 performer. Of the Rest Sea Silk Road and Toskana Belle could be involved if the top two don’t fire for any reason.

York 3.00

The well bred ASSESSMENT could easily prove a cut above this field. He has won 2 of his last 3 and was impressive with how he defied an absence to quicken away at Kempton last month. 6lb higher now he should be spot on for this and looks to have plenty more improvement to come. Ryan Moore takes over from Richard Kingscote which would be another notable positive.

Cruyff Turn won this last year and is a 1lb lower this time round but needs to improve a fair bit on that reappearance run at Thirsk to threaten. Quite a big price though so doesn’t look a bad each way bet if you’re looking for a saver. Northern Express is consistent enough and won at Thirsk last time so is another one who should run well.

York 3.00

Assessment 7/2

York 3.35

The Dante is always a good race and I’m going to take a chance on Sir Michael Stoute going back-to-back in the race. Last year he ran Desert Crown in this before his Derby win and he has another one in PASSENGER who could be very talented. He made his debut last month at Newmarket when catching the eye. He was ridden confidently and when switched out he just went away from them. He should improve for that run and could well be a big player against some of the proven Group horses.

Epictetus and Flying Honours sit above the selection in the market due to their Group form with the latter being the main danger with the promise of more to come. Canberra Legend has impressed and is 2-2 so is another one that could have a nice future.

York 4.10

This race has produced some big priced winners down the years and I think PILLOW TALK has been overlooked in the market here for Karl Burke. This filly won a Listed race at this meeting last season so clearly loves the track and was far from disgraced when beaten 4 lengths by The Ridler at Ascot on final start. She is capable of a big run fresh and at a double-figure price looks a knocking each way bet in a wide open race.

Walbank looks the main threat as he has won over C&D in the past and then chased home The Ridler in the Norfolk and was then a close third to Trillium in the Molecomb. All that form looks solid so expect a big run from him on return. Rocket Rodney also a player if on a going day as he can be a tricky customer.

York 4.45

This usually proves to be one of the better maidens of the season and CUBAN THUNDER gets a tentative nod. He ran really well at Newmarket on debut to finish second behind a horse who looked pretty smart. He was staying on late and looked as though the extra furlong is just what he needs. It is hard to get a line on the unraced horses but on that run alone he should be right there at the finish.

Emperor Of Rome ran well in a small field on debut and could be a lot better than that run. Impressive Act is well bred but could be better over further as the season goes on. Air Force One could be a big danger for David O’Meara who does well at York.

York 5.20

Another each way play in the lucky last at York on Thursday and CHESSPIECE should run well. This Nathaniel colt made a winning debut at Newcastle as a 2yo and then bumped into Military Order and Exoplanet when third on return at Newbury. He will strip a lot fitter from that and now sent handicapping could be a major player in this field.

Ulysses colt Knockbrex badly needed the experience when last on debut but improved to win impressively at Pontefract. He was a good second at Haydock and with more to come should be a big danger to all here but no juice in his price as he is currently the favourite. Almanzor colt Torre Del Oro is another one I’ll be keeping my eye on.
