Newbury 1.50
This is a Listed race in name only with NOBLE STYLE and Aesop’s Fables turning up here. The former lined up in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket after an unbeaten first season. That was his first run of this season and over a mile so it was a tough ask. Back down to this trip in an easier race with a run under his belt I expect the string of wins to continue again.
Aesop’s Fables is the danger despite not knowing what trip he is best at as they have been running him between 5 and 7 furlongs and has no win in 4 runs. He may bounce back this year at sprint trips as he is by No Nay Never but hard to trust. Of the rest Shaquille, Robaah and Rumstar will likely fight it out for places.
A competitive renewal of this and it was won by a double-figure price last year so tread carefully. I like TOTNES at around 11/2 though as she has won 2 of her last 3 and I thought she was value for more than the winning margin at Lingfield last time. She is fit and a 5lb rise could prove a bit lenient. If this is run to suit she might surprise a few.
Acotango was only beaten a length by Racingbreaks Ryder on reappearance and if improving he is a big danger. Ceanna got her head in front at Southwell and now upped to a mile on handicap debut and first time trying turf she could step forward as well.
Newbury 2.25
This is a stacked renewal of the Aston Park Stakes with YIBIR a worthy favourite. His form at Group level is the best on offer (12231) and on ratings he is ahead of the rest. Charlie Appleby is in great form the last few weeks and you would expect Yibir to be ready to roll here and is the one they all have to beat.
Haskoy was a horse we followed all last season and she improved a lot with every run. She is still improving and has to be the main danger on just her fourth start. Kemari and Old Harrovian could be the ones to battle out with for third place with the latter likely to have a lot more to come.
Newmarket 2.40
I remain convinced EMINENCY has a big one in him and this could be the first step to getting back on track. He caught the eye a few times as a 2yo and then was denied a run repeatedly at Kempton last month. He finished with running left and off the same mark here is clearly a well handicapped colt.
Revenite has won both starts since his debut and given he won fresh last season he shouldn’t have any worries fitness-wise and he could be the danger. Expert Agent is another one on a winning run now chasing a four-timer and if he improves again he will get competitive as well. Quinault is also on a four-timer but this is tougher especially carrying a 6lb penalty.
Newbury 3.00
In an open race I am siding with EXOPLANET who stepped forward for the step up to this trip over course and distance on his seasonal reappearance. He was beaten by a good horse that day in Military Order with the third placed horse winning nice at York on Wednesday I expect that was a hot race. He makes his handicap debut off just 97 and he could well be a fair bit better than that.
Desert Hero is the favourite at the time of writing and his form ties in well with the selection. He is the main danger but might need the run. Royal Rhyme really improved for the extra couple of furlongs and despite the 10lb rise could still be a player here. At a bigger price Bold Act has the form to be involved after being gelded.
Newmarket 3.15
I know POWERDRESS finished last in the Guineas but she clearly didn’t stay and I am willing to put a line through that. She is now sent handicapping in much calmer waters back down to 7f and we could see a completely different filly. She will appreciate the better ground too and looks to have a major chance for an in-form yard.
Striking Star won on debut at Sandown and has returned to form this season running well at Doncaster and then going down just half a length over C&D last time. He has more to come and if handling faster ground should run well. Changing Colours is another one to note as he wasn’t disgraced here last time albeit down the field.
Newbury 3.35
I’m looking forward to seeing MODERN GAMES back on these shores. This looks a decent renewal of the Lockinge and this Dubawi colt will have this field covered if at his best. He ran a cracker in a valuable Grade 1 in Keeneland last month so should be spot on for this now and if running to the level of his Goodwood form behind last year’s winner of this race Baaeed he will take a lot of beating.
Mutasaabeq never looked like coming back to them at Newmarket beating stablemate Native Trail. He looks the danger but won’t have this run to suit so will need more again. Laurel is an improving filly and has Dettori up and she might even emerge as the main danger.
