Haydock 1.15
A bit of a trappy race to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday with IN THE BREEZE my pick. He looks handicapped to pounce after a couple of poor runs on softer ground. He has form at this trip and on much faster ground than his recent runs with that run last August at Newmarket off 80 good enough to see him involved here. He is 6lb lower than that today and a fair price against a weak field.
Auld Toon Loon is the main threat and favourite at the time of writing. He isn’t proven at the trip yet but is in good form. His breeding and recent runs suggest he could be better over this distance and he will be a big player. Swift Tuttle could be better for the run but still has to improve to challenge those mentioned above.
The unbeaten FRANCESCO CLEMENTE is likely to be a warm order at Goodwood on Saturday and I’m keen to row in with the favourite. This son of Dubawi kept improving with experience last year and was particularly impressive on his final start at Newmarket where he won by 9 lengths. He promises to do even better as a 4yo and I can see him extending his winning spree.
Phantom Flight was a very impressive winner at York last year but then let backers down badly next time out. He seemed to need the run when third to Foxes Tales on return at Kempton and if coming forward from that could emerge as the main danger. King Of Conquest is on a hat-trick and beat a decent yardstick in Saga on return so is another one to note.
Haydock 1.50
It may be a small field for this race but it doesn’t lack quality with plenty of improvers in here. LAW OF THE SEA is the one that stands out though as he got dropped 10lb in the handicap for two poor runs in Meydan before switching to Ian Williams. He ran well behind Metier at Chester two weeks ago and back down in trip here he is surely a player in conditions he favours.
Carzola is the favourite after winning easily last time landing a hat-trick. He is clearly on the up and a 10lb rise will be interesting here. He is only 1lb lower than the selection now so will have to prove his class to win this. Of the rest Mountain Road who has improved no end since going handicapping could be a player at a bigger price if ready to roll on his seasonal reappearance.
Goodwood 2.05
This looks fiercely competitive but I do think TAFREEJ can run a big race for William Haggas and Dane O’Neill. This son of Shamardal improved on third start as a 2yo to open his account easily at Yarmouth. I thought he ran with a great deal of promise on return when third at Newbury behind Scholarship and with the cobwebs blown away if he can settle here he will take a huge amount of beating.
Dark Thirty just kept rolling to win at York and that was a good effort as I think Catch The Paddy and Ramazan could be two to follow in handicaps this season. He will run well again and probably at quite a big price as he is a negative in the betting at the time of writing. Of the rest Yacowlef also deserves a mention but he is up 6lb from that last win which makes this tougher on a faster surface.
Haydock 2.25
Obviously COVEY was entitled to win as he did at Newcastle last time sent off at very cramped odds. He was still impressive though and has won 2 from 3 now. He goes handicapping off a mark of 90 and that may well underestimate him. He should relish going up to a mile and is another horse I expect to be very well backed on the day.
Gleneagles colt Royal Cape bolted up at Windsor last time and is another one going the right way with Buick up now. Defence Of Fort was poor at Newbury but in testing ground and has been gelded since so worth noting too back on a sound surface back from an absence. Scholarship is a big price but you’d need to forgive him that Ascot run as he finished nearer last than first so has a bit to prove following that.
York 2.40
Could today be the day KORKER gets his head back in front? He failed to fire in soft ground on return but went mightily close when touched off by Regional at York last time and looks ready to strike now up just 3lb. He can be slowly away but broke well enough last time to suggest he is learning what is required now and I’m keen to chance him again.
Bedford Flyer was behind him when third at York last time and if building on that will be the danger again off the same mark. Chipstead is a smart horse when everything goes right but the ground might be fast enough. Music Society is never too far away and could be a bit of value to rattle the frame.
Haydock 3.00
The Sandy Lane looks a decent race with LITTLE BIG BEAR the one they all have to beat. He was a star over sprint trips last year before trying his luck over a mile in the 2000 Guineas to start the season. Pulling way to hard cost him any chance of seeing out that trip and this looks a logical race to run in. His win in the Phoenix Stakes was mightily impressive and if running to that level he should take this.
Bradsell is the main danger despite having to reverse form with the selection. He likely needed the run at Ascot last time when beaten by the re-opposing Cold Case and I think he will reverse that form with him. The race could well suit him but still needs to find 10lb on ratings to beat the selection. Cold Case and Al Dasim will fight it out for a place.
York 3.15
I’m keen to take a chance on RIVER OF STARS at York on Saturday. I know this Sea The Stars filly was fifth behind Mimikyu at Doncaster on final start but I think she did too much too soon in a race that paid to be held up off the pace. Her previous wins at Lingfield and Chester and her second to Perfect Alibi before that all worked out well and with the promise of more to come now a 4yo I think she looks the value.
Mimikyu was well held behind Emily Upjohn on final start but can still do better too so does look the danger but is a bit short in the betting. Sea Flawless won 2 from 3 and she has more to come too but this is definitely the toughest race she would have faced so far. One Evening still retains potential and is another one you cannot completely rule out.
Haydock 3.30
What a race the Temple Stakes is this year with Group 1 form on show here. At the prices DRAMATISED gets a narrow vote. Her form over the minimum trip reads 112 with a Group 2 win last season before narrowly being touched off in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. She won on her debut last season and will likely be ready to go for this. She has a few pounds to find on ratings with the favourite but she has a penalty and this looks a great chance to take a Group 1 on ground she loves.
The Platinum Queen is the obvious danger now with Roger Varian. She was a top class sprinter last season but did blow out at the Breeders’ Cup behind the selection. She will be thereabouts in all the big sprints this season but it won’t be easy carrying a penalty on her first run since November. Twilight Calls could run a big race against his younger rivals with very good form at this level on a fast surface.
Curragh 3.40
This race very much revolves around Gleneagles colt ROYAL SCOTSMAN who ran a really encouraging race when beaten just over 2 lengths in the Guineas on reappearance. That was his first try over the mile and despite refusing to settle he did his best work late. He will improve from that and looks the class act in the race so hard to see him getting beat as long as this doesn’t turn too tactical.
Paddington is improving all the time and looks the main danger from the O’Brien battalion. He has won 3 from 4 now and was nicely on top again in a Listed race at the Curragh last time. Hi Royal was runner-up in the Guineas but had everything go his way on that occasion and is possibly flattered.
