In a really open renewal I am siding with the 8 year old EQUILATERAL who ran one of his best races for a while last time out. He was second behind the classy Dramatised over course and distance. The form would easily be good enough to win this race and now he has similar fast ground he is the one to beat.
Regional ran a cracker to beat Korker at York last time and this looks like a logical step. He will be a danger on the front but they might not let him have it as easy. Raasel is a good horse but might need a quicker pace than forecast so Clarendon House could well chase the chief protagonists home.
That was a big run from ALL THE KING’S MEN at Epsom last week and if handling the drop back to 6f here could take a lot of beating. He doesn’t lack speed and has won over the extended 6f before so the trip shouldn’t be too much of an issue. If he is in the right position he could be hitting the line best under Ryan Moore. A lot of the pace seems to be drawn low so I think he’ll bounce out and try and track in behind. He runs off the same mark as last time and will likely prove popular.
Mr Wagyu also ran at the Derby meeting and ran well when third behind Badri so a similar effort would see him as one of the dangers. Silver Samurai is fresher than most last seen at York last month. He was poor on that occasion but was ridden out the back and could never get competitive. He is better than that and down in the weights again looks an each way player.
Beverley 2.05
You can see why MIDNIGHT AFFAIR is a hot favourite for this after her debut at Newmarket. She was travelling really well a furlong or so out and couldn’t find a gap. Once she got out the winner had gone and she did well to chase her down to finish second. That race looks like a solid yardstick and she could be even better for the run. I think she will take a fair bit of beating.
Ziggy’s Phoenix catches the eye with her Group 2 entry and ran with credit at Listed level in France last week. She is the danger even though I think the selection has more scope for improvement. Never Fear won a low key maiden at Wolverhampton and would need to step forward to take this but I still expect her to fight out a place at least.
Haydock 2.25
With 2 wins from 6 starts GOOD SHOW might still have more to offer and he is only 3lb higher here. This trip looks ideal for now so if he does improve again I think he’ll give us a very good run for our money. There is potentially a lot of pace on which I think he’ll enjoy and I’m surprised he is as big as 5/1 for this.
Cumulonimbus got his head back in front at Newmarket last time and looks the danger having now won 3 of his last 5. Get Shirty carries top-weight but he needs to leave that run at York last time well behind as he certainly wasn’t at his best for that. Dark Pine is another one that should get competitive.
Beverley 2.40
In an open race I think UNITED FRONT is a cracking bet after a nice run on fast ground at Yarmouth last time. He races of a 14lb higher mark on the all-weather so he could be quite well-in here. He was in good form over a mile at Meydan and I think his run last week will put him bang on for a big run here.
Ugo Gregory loves the track as he showed when just losing out last time over course and distance. He is nudged up a few pounds for that which doesn’t leave him with much to spare but could prove the main threat. Miss Britain is drawn quite wide but on her last two runs she has to run well.
Haydock 3.00
That second in the Galtres Stakes at York from TIME LOCK is a standout piece of form and if she strips fitter from that Goodwood reappearance she will be extremely hard to beat in this. She has only had a handful of starts and this daughter of Frankel should have a lot more to offer yet. She holds another Group entry in Ireland next week so it will be interesting to see if she takes up that engagement if she does win this.
Modaara impressed winning by a street at Kempton on return and if she keeps improving she is the obvious danger but strictly on the clock she has plenty to find at this stage of her career with the selection. Mimikyu was a game second in the Bronte Cup at York and I do like the winner River Of Stars so she is another one that should get competitive.
Beverley 3.15
There are some nice types lining up for this but FUSTERLANDIA could easily turn out to be the best of them. This colt by Mehmas ran a cracker to get within a neck of success on debut at Leicester and with the front pair clear he won’t need much more improvement to go one better now. He showed serious speed that day so the drop back to 5f looks ideal and I’ll be surprised if he is beaten here.
Havana Grey colt Cuban Slide romped home by 9 lengths on debut but the time wasn’t great and 2 of the 3 rivals have been soundly beaten since which is enough to put me off in a better race here. Room Service and Bombay Bazaar both won on their lasts starts so also deserve respect with the latter probably feared most as that form at this track isn’t working out too badly.
Haydock 3.35
This is a tough race to try and work out but I do quite like JUMBY to run well. He progressed well last year winning the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and he is better than what he showed behind Modern Games last month. That was a Group 1 so this is obviously a big drop down in grade and I think he could be capable of going close against these rivals. He should love coming back down to 7f and gets my vote.
The Astrologist also has a bit to prove but he was a Group 3 winner in Australia so does have the form to mix it here. He was poor at York but might be capable of giving the selection most to think about. El Caballo has struggled the last twice and I’ve not seen enough to make him a play in this but no doubt he’ll have his supporters as always.
