Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Wednesday Tips and Previews
DAY 2 FROM GLORIOUS GOODWOOD! Some cracking racing with Paddington back out again in the Sussex Stakes. I have all the action covered as usual.

Goodwood 1.50
The market is already speaking positively about AMLETO and it is easy to see why. This son of Sea The Stars is a full brother to the talented Sea Of Class and has improved with every start so far. I liked the way he opened his account at Chester back in May and that form has been franked since with the runner-up Paddy The Squire winning in the style of a promising colt at Ayr earlier this week.
He goes up in trip for his handicap debut now and an opening mark of 89 should prove lenient. Obviously no easy task with a fair bit of potential against him too and the danger is likely Westerton who remains unexposed over this trip and has Ryan Moore up again. Fox Journey also has more improvement to come and should run well.
Goodwood 2.25
In a really open renewal of the Oak Tree Stakes I have a couple good each way bets in this. I loved how BREEGE ran at Royal Ascot behind Coppice and was arguably a bit unlucky in the run. She ran well at a higher level than this behind Blue Rose Cen at the end of last season on soft ground and I think she has a good chance here with the 3 year old allowance.
MATILDA PICOTTE seems to have been overlooked in the market as I think she brings some of the best form to the table. They keep changing her trip which may be a contributing factor. Her run on heavy ground behind Never Ending Story at this trip looks solid and I think she could be winning races at a higher level than this in time. Fast Response is entitled to step up to this level on her recent form but I think Jumbly could prove the main danger if going on a softer surface.
Goodwood 3.00
The front 3 look to have this between them and it is hard to get away from KYLIAN who ran on strongly to win the Dragon Stakes at Sandown by 6 lengths last month. He is on a hat-trick now and seems to be getting better with every run so I expect him to take this step up into Group company in his stride. Obviously a hot race but he deserves to be favourite.
Big Evs was impressive winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last time and is feared. He will go hard off the front though and that might suit the selection. Baheer isn’t out of it either after impressing at Newbury but he will need to step up again to win this.
Goodwood 3.35
This looks a cracking race between PADDINGTON and Inspiral. Unfortunately Paddington is in at a short price now after he won the St James’ Palace at Royal Ascot and then the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. He looked top class on both occasions beating Chalden and Emily Upjohn. He has improved from a rating of 97 to start the season to 125 now and that puts him 5lb clear of this field. He handles any ground and is likely the one to beat.
Inspiral is a top-class filly when she is at her best and ran well on her comeback in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. She will be better for that run but they will likely not want it too soft for her. If it gets tactical and Paddington has to push the pace she could pounce late but Paddington just seems the more straightforward at this point. The rest have a lot to find with Chindit the best of them especially if getting an easy lead.
Goodwood 4.10
I really like TROPICAL ISLAND to make it 2-2 here. I thought she won on debut despite looking green and she even jumped the winning line. She will know a lot more this time around and while she’ll need to leave that bare form behind she looks a strong traveller and I can see her cruising up off the pace before finishing best. She is around 4/1 and that seems generous.
Juniper Berries shaped a lot better than the bare result last time so could run well for a long way. Flora Of Bermuda looks the main danger though as she will find this easier. Beenham is another one who could run well.
Goodwood 4.45
I have to admit this does look a competitive race on paper but I have been waiting for the progressive LA ISLA MUJERES to run again and I will be chancing her at what looks good value. She first caught the eye going down just half a length at Salisbury on reappearance and has done nothing but improve since. She was always finding enough to come out on top at Kempton back in June and then back on turf for her handicap debut made no mistake bolting up by 7 lengths at Salisbury.
She is up 11lb but deservedly so given how much more there could be to come and I think she is worth keeping on side. Ralph Beckett has won 2 of the last 3 renewals of this race too so usually targets a good one at it. Frankel filly Decoration ran well on handicap debut and will be the danger if handling the forecast soft ground.
Goodwood 5.20
A fiercely competitive lucky last so no surprise to see me take two against the field. RHOSCOLYN has tumbled down the weights and shaped much better last time at Beverley so this previous C&D winner should go well off a mark of just 87 now. The other one I like is DARK THIRTY who was a good third behind the hugely progressive Quinault at Newmarket and the stable have done well in this in the past.
Plenty of dangers in a race as tough as this and likely headed by Love De Vega. He will come on from that Newmarket reappearance and should run well off this mark. Classic is also respected having got his head back in front at Sandown last time.
