In what is a really open race I am going to take a chance on DARK MOON RISING at a big price. He had been running in Group races at one point with ratings in the 100s and is now down to just 86. He won well over course and distance last month and the yard may well have targeted this race. If in the same form as last time he will outrun his odds.
3 year olds don’t have a great record in this race but you still have to respect Balance Play and Intinso who will be live dangers with more to come. Wootton’Sun could prove the biggest danger though as he has been progressing through the handicaps and will be thereabouts off just 5lb higher.
That Ascot Gold Cup win from COURAGE MON AMI on just his fourth start sticks in the mind and despite suffering defeat at Glorious Goodwood behind a few of these I think we’ll see him bounce back in a big way here. The way he got the better of Coltrane at Royal Ascot was a massive effort and I still think the best is yet to come. If he returns to that sort of form then quite simply he will win this.
Coltrane was third behind Quickthorn at Goodwood but I don’t see that form playing out as the winner was handed a soft lead and never came back. He ran well but is exposed now and while he should run his race he might struggle to hold off the selection who will likely be back to his best. Of the rest River Of Stars is a filly I like a lot and she is progressing well so might go better than her price suggests.
York 3.00
This is quite open for a Gimcrack but it looks perfect for a horse I have been waiting to step up in trip. KYLIAN heads the market after taking a Listed race at Sandown and going close in the Molecomb at Glorious Goodwood. He didn’t have the best run at Goodwood after being bumped at the start and York will suit him much better. He is bred to come into his own over further and I think he will travel into the race well and is the one to beat.
Johannes Brahms is the main danger despite not being seen since Royal Ascot. He was third behind the same rival that beat Kylian that day (Big Evs) and likely has a lot more to come. Haatem has been interesting all season but has a penalty and has been doing his winning over further.
York 3.35
Highfield Princess will likely be sent off a short priced favourite for this and while she won it well last year there has to be value in opposing the 6/4. She won at Goodwood last time but at Group 2 level and was previously beaten by BRADSELL at Royal Ascot. The latter is a 3yo colt on the up and freshened up since that King’s Stand win I think he can put it up to the short priced favourite again. He has only actually had 6 starts to date winning 3 of them and I know he somewhat impeded Highfield Princess to win last time he remains open to improvement and I’m expecting a huge run.
It is not just a two horse race though as Big Evs has impressed winning at Royal Ascot and then following up gamely at Glorious Goodwood. He is likeable and should acquit himself well hopefully in defeat.
York 4.10
This doesn’t look as deep as usual and I have it between a couple of these with ROWAYEH having a really good chance. She has been progressing well this season with a win on handicap debut at Sandown before going close at Goodwood when stuck at the back. She is bred to get this trip and could well be better for it. With improvement likely she is the right favourite and the one to beat.
Amanzoe went close in this race a year ago but that was her last run or she would be a solid bet in this race. Of the rest Prenup looks a live danger after winning at Sandown last time and carries a low weight. Ryan Moore riding for Charlie Johnston catches the eye and Sirona is worth a second look in the market.
York 4.45
I backed UNDER THE SUN at Ascot last month and he was only headed in the final few strides. He is improving with experience and given the horse that beat him Al Musmak has chased home Rosallion since the form has been nicely franked for me as I rate the latter strongly. This Golden Horn colt should go on improving for a while yet and I think this looks a good opportunity back in a maiden to get off the mark.
The betting is suggesting Battle Cry is the biggest danger for Aidan O’Brien. He was only beaten half a length last time and if stepping forward again should get competitive. Of the rest Territories colt Kings Valley was only beaten 3 lengths on debut at Sandown behind Arabian Crown and is another one that can do better going forward.
York 5.15
The final race on day 3 is an open affair with ENGLISH OAK the one that catches the eye on handicap debut. Ed Walker has a good record with first time handicappers and the booking for Ryan Moore is obviously a good one. He looks to have been saved for this race after a maiden win and a good run in a Novice event at Newmarket where the form is working out well. Off a mark of 90 he should be bang there at the finish.
Enfjaar is the marginal favourite at the time of writing and does look a smart prospect but carries a fair bit more weight than the selection with the same amount of improvement expected. Of the rest Modesty could go well on handicap debut off a mark of 87.
