I can’t wait to see NOSTRUM out again. He was so impressive on reappearance winning at Newmarket and then having looked to be asserting was just nailed in the closing stages at Glorious Goodwood last time. I think the ground was probably softer than ideal but even so he was beaten by a very good colt in Epictetus. His win over Embesto has been franked since and this is a very good opportunity to get back on track.
El Drama was only just chinned by Al Aasy at Haydock last time and looks the main danger off the back of that. I wouldn’t rule out a big run from Spirit Danger though who is on a hat-trick and while this is obviously a lot tougher that was a nice win over an improver at Windsor last time.
Unbeaten filly SHUWARI faces her toughest task to date but she won with a bit in hand again at Sandown and given that has been franked since she might prove up to the task. The runner-up Fallen Angel slammed Soprano by 3 lengths at Newmarket next time out so that paid a handsome boost and even the horse that finished seventh Romanova went and won next time out. She is versatile regarding the ground having won on Good to Firm on debut at Newbury and then in Soft ground last time and is hard to pick holes in.
This is a good race with plenty of potential on show but I think she has to go down as the most exciting. Carla’s Way hacked up on debut but raced too freely at Royal Ascot. If bouncing back she looks the danger. Pretty Crystal also has strong form to her name and is another one to note.
York 2.25
Even after two easy wins I had my reservations about LORDSHIP as he hadn’t really had to battle but when asked to get on top at Haydock last time he really impressed running on strongly. He is looking more and more the finished article now and even sitting as favourite for this I think there might be value in his price. He has improved 20lb now to a mark of 94 and still might have a bit in hand of the assessor. He is such a strong travelling horse who should be suited by this track and with plenty of pace on if things drop right he is the one I want to be on.
Alhambra Palace is another one I have had on my radar this season and now chasing a hat-trick looks the most obvious danger. He is up another 6lb but should be capable of more so will run well. Davideo has won 2 of his last 3 and is another one that should get competitive.
Goodwood 2.40
I’ll be hoping Nostrum has taken the York opener as that would be a nice form boost for EPICTETUS here. He picked up really well to run that rival down over C&D last time and with the promise of more to come he can follow up and win at Group 2 level for the first time. The way he picked up last time was impressive and a stronger pace will help him so hopefully Angel Bleu pushes forward.
The danger is probably just about Aldaary who has been running quite well without winning all season. He was 5 lengths behind Paddington in the Sussex Stakes last time and given this is easier he has to be feared. Charyn also has form that ties in with Paddington and is another one that could get competitive in a decent renewal of the Celebration Mile.
York 3.00
Kinross won this last year and he arrives here with confidence high having held on well to beat Isaac Shelby at Glorious Goodwood last time. He has to be feared but he is likely to be a skinny price and I prefer to have an each way go on OLIVIA MARALDA at around 14/1. This filly really impressed winning well at Epsom back in June and I think she had excuses when a good fifth behind Age Of Kings at Royal Ascot last time. She is open to improvement and may well surprise a few here.
The favourite Kinross is the one to beat but Sacred could also be capable of a big run. She beat Sandrine impressively on reappearance at Lingfield and then missed just a neck to Khaadem in the QEII. If at her best she should be competitive but she did fail to fire in this behind Kinross last year albeit not in as good form like she is this time around.
York 3.35
I love the Sky Bet Ebor and as hard as it was opposing Sweet William I just feel like he is too short in a race of this nature. He will go well and is clearly a danger to all but REAL DREAM looks the value play. He is unexposed himself having only had the 6 starts and his win over Crescent Lake at Ascot last month really was quite impressive. Obviously he needs to improve again but this trip clearly brings out the best in him and a mark of 99 looks to underestimate him at this stage of his career. I think we’ll get a really good run for our money at around 8/1 at the time of writing.
I have been with Sweet William all season and he is eyeing up a four-timer now. He impressed again off the bridle at Goodwood and will likely prove popular. Of the rest Dettori partners Absurde who is interesting on his second to Vauban at Royal Ascot. He was given a spin over hurdles at Galway so will be spot on for this fitness-wise and he is another one I can see being nibbled at in the betting. At bigger prices both Scampi and Adjuvant tie in on form lines are will likely be thereabouts.
York 4.10
Summerghand won this last year and will undoubtedly prove popular again especially seeing as he ran so well in the Dash here and then was denied just a head to Sophia’s Starlight in the Great St Wilfrid. He is thriving and should go well but I like ORAZIO at around 9/1. This colt really caught the eye winning at Newmarket and then following up at Ascot but he failed to land the gamble at Royal Ascot and then ran no race at Glorious Goodwood. He is a lot better than that and back on a sounder surface if he improves again he could easily resume his progress.
Plenty of dangers in a race like this probably headed by Aberama Gold who loves it here. Gale Force Maya is another one that could easily bounce back to her best and have a big say. Lethal Levi hasn’t been running badly and back at this venue could be in for an improved showing so don’t ignore at huge odds.
York 4.45
Baheer was impressive at Newbury and then I think the ground went against him at Goodwood so if York does avoid the rain he would definitely be interesting but I’m siding with PUROSANGUE for Andrew Balding. This colt by Aclaim finished in front of Baheer at Goodwood when denied just a neck by Big Evs and looks to be a nice prospect in the making. He was given a lot to do by Oisin Murphy the last day but I liked his attitude running on strongly and it is no surprise to see him a warm favourite for this.
Alabama also has form with Big Evs having finished a good fifth in the Windsor Castle and has knocked on the door twice since. He has had a few more chances than most but shouldn’t be overlooked. Sketch will bounce back at some point but probably wants to get to the front and dictate from an early stage and that might not be an easy task with so much quality on show again.
York 5.20
I have backed HAUNTED DREAM all season and he deserves to win a nice pot like this. He really hasn’t put a foot wrong in recent starts and again ran a massive race beaten just a length at Goodwood last time. He has plenty going for him again and if he gets a bit more luck he may well get his head back in front.
Astro King was denied just a nose here last month and obviously a repeat of that would likely see him bang there. Have Secret finished second at Goodwood but was beaten 6 and a half lengths by Royal Rhyme. He could still have a big race in him though so don’t underestimate. Obelix is another one I expect to be threatening for a place at least.
