The way APPLE AWAY put her rivals to the sword at Leicester was impressive and given the runner-up Makin’yourmindup has won a good race at Newbury since the form looks even better now. She bumped into Grey Dawning at Warwick last month and I rate that rival highly so again the form stacks up. She likely has more to come on just her fourth start in this sphere and I make her the one to beat.
Kilbeg King was third behind Il Est Francais and Hermes Allen at Kempton and looks the danger.
I’m surprised RUBAUD is fairly weak in the betting for this as he looks the most likely winner for me. I know he could only finish fourth at Cheltenham last month but that track didn’t really suit and he did too much early on in that race. He was progressive prior to that and back over this sharp 2 miles I expect him to get firmly back on track.
Nemean Lion ran well at Kempton so is considered but Colonel Mustard may prove a greater threat back over hurdles.
Ascot 2.25
A wide open renewal but I think it is worth noting the market has got this right in recent years with Good Risk At All winning at 6/4 back in 2022 and Irish Hill winning it last year. I’m going to side with BAD who stuck on really well despite being one of the first off the bridle last time. That form is working out well and freshened up and given a wind op he could show further improvement up in trip with cheekpieces added.
Rare Edition looked back to his best winning at Kempton last month and is definitely a big danger. Irish Hill won this last year and is also noted.
Haydock 2.40
Butch definitely has the flashy profile heading into this having brought up the hat-trick at Cheltenham last month. That form has taken plenty of knocks since though and I think he is opposable as favourite. I much prefer BOTOX HAS who has been highly tried of late and will find this easier. The cheekpieces are back on and he looks nailed on to give his running.
The selection actually beat Red Risk a length at Wetherby back in November and that might be the form line that plays out again.
Ascot 3.00
With Iron Bridge likely to head to Haydock I’m expecting VICTTORINO to go off even shorter than 7/2 for this. He is 2-2 at this track having made a winning start over fences here back in November and then despite a 4lb rise followed up here just before Christmas. Things didn’t go to plan at Cheltenham but he wasn’t disgraced and back at this venue with the promise of more to come he should get back to winning ways.
The top weight Threeunderthrufive is a very talented horse and he will be the danger if taking to this track. His form the last twice looks very solid.
Haydock 3.15
Nicky Richards has really hit form of late and he had another nice horse win yesterday in the shape of Nab Wood. He has FAMOUS BRIDGE here and I think this 8yo can quickly bounce back. He was pulled up at Doncaster last month but he was never put in the race and could just never land a blow before being hampered. If none the worse back at this venue which he loves he could run a big race up in trip.
Yeah Man ran a cracker going down less than a length to Victtorino at Ascot last time and freshened up could emerge as the biggest danger.
Ascot 3.36
Some really smart horses have won this down the years and I’d like to think L’HOMME PRESSE fits the bill this time around. He made a convincing return to action beating Protektorat at Lingfield last month and with that under his belt should be fit enough to take care of these rivals before having a tilt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month. He is still lightly raced for his age and if handling going right handed will get the job done.
Pic D’orhy benefitted from Shishkin refusing to race at Ascot and then finished a tired horse when second to Banbridge at Kempton. I have a feeling he is starting to regress so I think Ahoy Senor is value for the forecast.
