Newbury 1.20

I do like these Veteran events but they can be quite tricky to find the winner. With the ground testing and the yard coming back into form COMMODORE must have a great chance for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. He is a 12yo now but he goes well off the front and given he won fresh at Cheltenham 3 years back a return to anything like that would see him run a big race. He is the right place to be a play so I’ve chanced him.

Highland Hunter is a strong stayer and is probably the biggest danger but he can makes mistakes so he’ll want to get into a decent rhythm to win this and there is little value in his price. Fortescue is also capable when the ground is deep so is another one to note.

Kelso 1.42

At first glance this looks a wide open race but the more I delved into it the more I fancy SERIOUS OPERATOR to run a big race. He was back in the winners enclosure in good style at Doncaster back in December and raised 5lb wasn’t disgraced in the Lanzarote at Kempton back in January. Obviously that was a decent race and he finished behind the right horses. The form has been franked since and if you were being critical you could argue he was given too much to do. Patrick Wadge gets the leg back up and claims a valuable 3lb off his back so that has to be a positive.

With Rafferty’s Return and Brewin’upastorm likely to go forward he should get a good pace to run down. The danger could prove to be Itso Fury who is still fairly unexposed.

Newbury 1.55

A wide open handicap chase now and it might be worth having an each way poke at HELTENHAM for Dan Skelton. This horse took really well to fences winning 3 times last year and he was back on the up winning on reappearance at Wetherby back in November. He has held his form well since and only went down narrowly at Kempton last week. If handling this quick turnaround he could have a say racing off the same mark.

Kandoo Kid is definitely the one I fear most. He got caught a bit further back than ideal at this track back in December but ran on strongly to peg back Frero Banbou. He then bumped into Djelo at Ascot who is a very good hors before pulling up at Doncaster. Back down in trip he still has potential and should run a nice race.

Kelso 2.17

I know there is a bit of a cloud over the Nicky Henderson yard at present but even so I’m struggling to oppose JANGO BAIE here. This horse won his first two starts over hurdles beating a couple of nice types in Tellherthename at Ascot and then Favour And Fortune at Aintree. He failed in his hat-trick bid at Huntingdon last time but the winner Handstands looks a really nice type so that form could work out well in time. He is obviously unexposed and open to further improvement and it’s interesting he goes here instead of to the Festival.

The danger is likely Personal Ambition who has won 2 of his last 3 but don’t rule out Alnilam either in a good race.

Doncaster 2.35

Tommy’s Oscar won a Grade 2 over C&D last season and looked good winning on reappearance at Kelso. He was down the field back over hurdles on penultimate start but didn’t shape badly back over fences latest and should run well. I do prefer HOMME PUBLIC though for Oliver Greenall. This novice won at Wetherby and Cheltenham before bumping into Persian Time at Ascot and with more to come having been freshened up looks a key player.

It is not just a two-horse race though with Nube Negra lining up for Dan and Harry Skelton. Connections reach for cheekpieces and he shouldn’t be ruled out. Malystic is another one with a squeak.

Doncaster 2.35

Homme Public 3/1

Main danger Tommy’s Oscar

Kelso 2.50

I know the yard are under a bit of a cloud at the moment but I’m still really keen on UNDER CONTROL here for Nicky Henderson. This mare was right back to form chasing home Ashroe Diamond at Doncaster back in January and that is really good form. This is her second start following a wind op and she remains largely unexposed. I think she can improve again and she should justify favouritism here. I thought she’d be shorter but I guess that is because the yard are quiet so she could represent value at 7/2.

Benson actually won this race last year beating Colonel Mustard and he could emerge as the main danger. He will be ridden quietly and I expect him to finish well and run a big race. Skycutter is being backed and is another one that must enter calculations.

Doncaster 3.10

Despite taking a big drift in the betting OTTIZZINI won impressively at Musselburgh last month. She returned a 14/1 winner and was going away at the finish. She had Cadell and Florida Dreams in behind who are both nice horses and given she is unexposed over this trip I’m confident she can follow up despite this looking competitive.

Lunar Discovery impressed winning twice in heavy ground at Hexham at the start of the season and hasn’t done much wrong since only going down narrowly at Carlisle last month. She goes up in trip and looks the obvious danger.

Doncaster 3.10

Ottizzini 4/1

Kelso 3.25

This should be a good opportunity for MONBEG GENIUS to get himself back in the winners enclosure. He was back to form in some regard when third at Newbury back in December and freshened up again since looks well placed here to get back to winning ways. He remains lightly raced for his age so the best could still be yet to come.

Aye Right is obviously tough and likeable but he isn’t getting any younger. Thunder Rock could emerge as the biggest danger.

Doncaster 3.40

With 2 wins from 3 starts over fences SOME SCOPE is looking progressive now and I thought there was lots to like about that win over 3 miles here last time. He was ridden quietly and just picked his way through before staying on strongly. He has been put up another 10lb but that visual impression was backed up by the clock too and he is clearly still ahead of the handicapper.

Erne River showed a good attitude to win here on penultimate start and if bouncing back could be the threat.
