Cheltenham Festival Day 2 Tips
All eyes on Ballyburn to get Day 2 off to a flyer after a great start to the festival on day 1! A treble on the 3 short priced favourites will undoubtedly prove popular today and it will be interesting to see if the bookies are brave and try and take them on.

I have made no secret what I think of BALLYBURN putting him up as my best bet of the Festival before he ran at the DRF. He was mightily impressive that day and despite dropping back to 2 miles I was confident he’d be targeted at this race over further. He has always looked like a staying type to me and given I’m on at 3/1 I’m definitely not ready to oppose. He was 2-2 in bumpers and has gone 2-3 over hurdles with that sole defeat coming on reappearance to Firefox. He is open to plenty more improvement yet and is worth keeping firmly on side.
In terms of a danger it is likely to be a stablemate and I wouldn’t be surprise to see PREDATORS GOLD run on for second. He really impressed winning on debut over hurdles at Punchestown and has since chased home the well touted Caldwell Potter at Leopardstown before bumping into Dancing City at the DRF last month. He has more to come and is a horse I quite like.
I can’t wait to see FACT TO FILE in this. Inexperience got the better of him when beaten into second by American Mike on chase debut at Navan on reappearance but he quickly stepped forward to bolt up by 17 lengths at Leopardstown just after Christmas. Him and Gaelic Warrior scared the opposition off at the DRF and he ran out an impressive winner in a match. He clearly has a huge engine and his jumping is improving all the time. He has more to come and he is being regarded as a future Gold Cup horse so I’ve taken the 10/1 about the 2025 Gold Cup.
Stay Away Fay is a horse I definitely respect and he has an attitude to die for but he is quite one paced and I just think the selection will go through the gears and go away from him up the hill. It is not just a two horse race though as Monty’s Star is also improving and should give a good account of himself.
I usually try and oppose the buzz horses in the handicaps but I’m struggling to get away from SA MAJESTE in the Coral Cup. He improved to win impressively at Limerick beating Noble Yeats and has clearly been put away for this race since. The form has obviously been franked with the runner-up Noble Yeats going on to win the Cleeve Hurdle. An opening mark of 140 is almost certainly lenient so if the race pans out I can’t see how he doesn’t go close.
The other one I’ve backed is BUILT BY BALLYMORE for Martin Brassil. I managed to get 14/1 about this horse a couple of weeks ago and once he was confirmed for this race his odds have tumbled. His trainer has finished runner-up in this race for the last two years and this handicap debutant is expected to take a big step forward and get involved. Doddiethegreat is feared but I have my worry over Henderson’s form heading into Cheltenham. I also thought Jigoro was a little overpriced and might get involved too.
Impossible to oppose EL FABIOLO here for Willie Mullins. This horse beat Jonbon in the Arkle last year and has been faultless since. He is now a perfect 6-6 over fences and still looks to be improving judging by his romp at the DRF last month. He will be spot on for this and his jumping is getting better if anything so the rest will be playing catch-up. Depending on how many winners Mullins has had heading into this race could dictate how short he goes off so you might want to take the 4/7 on offer now.
Jonbon is obviously a very smart horse himself and he made an uncharacteristic mistake when beaten here last time. He should be a lot sharper here and I do expect him to run well but hard to see him reversing form with the favourite. Gentleman De Mee might surprise a few and manage to finish third as Edwardstone is going to go hard off the front and might pay for that late.
Minella Indo was 7/4 fav for this race ante-post but has been a notable drifter as the race gets closer and that is probably due to the ground. He obviously has a chance but COKO BEACH looks the value play to me. He was pulled up in the Grand National last year but has been in rude-health since running a cracker to finish third in the Munster National before staying on dourly to win the Troytown. He did little wrong at Aintree then took really well to the Cross Country course to win impressively at Punchestown. He will relish the ground and must have a massive chance.
Obviously stablemate Delta Work is on a hat-trick having beat Tiger Roll back in 2022 and then Galvin last year. He has his chance again and should be spot on following that run over hurdles at Navan. The more rain the better for him too and he looks the biggest danger. At a massive price I wouldn’t be surprise to see Stattler run well and he might be worth a little saver at around 18/1 at the time of writing.
I don’t think I’ve ever been as confident on one in the Grand Annual as I am on LIBBERTY HUNTER this year. The more rain the better for him and he has been really progressive over fences winning in good style at Wincanton before following up here back in January beating a good horse in Matata. He is such a strong travelling horse and with further improvement to come I think he is up to defying a 7lb higher mark. He will love a strong gallop and I can just picture him coming there swinging up the hill.
Given the each way places on offer I’ve also backed MADARA who is chasing a hat-trick himself too after winning here back in December beating In Excelsis Deo and then following up at Leopardstown seeing off useful yardstick Path D’oroux. He has been put up 10lb so the handicapper clearly fears him and with more to come he must get involved. The final pick is UNEXPECTED PARTY who just looks too big at 16/1. He has a bit to prove having been well beaten recently but his win over Knappers Hill at the start of the season was promising and down to a mark of 138 he could run a place if bouncing back.
I have made it no secret that I’m not a massive fan of Bumpers and even though this is the best of them I still won’t be going mad. I’ve ended up backing two at nice each way price with my main hope being THE YELLOW CLAY for Gordon Elliott. This horse won his first two starts impressively and then was badly hampered when coming with a strong run at Leopardstown last month. He has gone a bit under the radar as a result and looks too big to be left alone.
The other one I like is ARGENTO BOY for Willie Mullins. He created a good impression bolting up by 7 lengths on debut and with natural improvement may well be good enough to get involved. He is well related being a half-brother to 4 winners and despite a lack of experience I think he’ll give a good account. Dangers include the favourite Jasmin De Vaux who is the pick of Patrick Mullins and Jalon D’oudairies too who looks a nice horse. Romeo Coolio is another one who could get involved along with You Oughta Know in a wide open renewal.
