Aintree Day 1 Tips

The Grand National meeting at Aintree kicks off on Thursday with 4 Grade 1s and there are some big names putting their reputations on the line including the return of Sir Gino for Nicky Henderson.

It’s a shame we only have 5 heading to post for this but it by no means lacks quality with the 1-2 in the Turners locking horns again. I’m keen to stick with GREY DAWNING as he just seems to be improving all the time. He kept galloping on strongly to beat Ginny’s Destiny by 2 lengths and his jumping was foot-perfect. He has won 3 of his last 4 now and even that defeat he looked unlucky when making a mistake at the last. I think he’ll confirm that latest form and not only is he worth following here but going forward too.

Ginny’s Destiny did little wrong in the Turners and looks the obvious danger again. All his form has been franked and he looks sure to run his race. Il Etait Temps beat Found A Fifty at the DRF and then finishing third to Gaelic Warrior in the Arkle. If he stays the trip he’ll be best of the rest.

It is still hard to tell if Nicky Henderson has tuned a corner as he has only run 4 horses in the past fortnight but at least 1 of them has won and won well. SIR GINO looks like he is going to take his chance and if he is fit and well I expect him to take a lot of beating. He is a perfect 2-2 over hurdles under Rules and couldn’t really have been any more impressive brushing aside Burdett Road at Cheltenham when last seen back in January. He is learning and improving all the time and remains a hugely exciting prospect.

The obvious danger for me is Kargese who improved to win at DRF before running a cracker when second to Majborough in the Triumph. A repeat of that would likely see her make a race of it with the favourite. Kalif Du Berlais is also a really promising looking horse but I’m surprised Nicholls isn’t giving him a bit more time as he still looked very raw when winning at Kempton.

Be wary of genuine hold-up performers

I’ve made it no secret how highly I rate GERRI COLOMBE and it was great to see him run a career best in the Gold Cup. Visually it didn’t look like he had a hard race as Jack Kennedy wasn’t too tough on him and he still jumped the last like a relatively fresh horse. He just found Galopin Des Champs too classy on the day but ran his heart out in defeat. I still think he can improve again and given he was so impressive at this track last year there is good grounds to believe he will back up that performance last month.

In terms of a danger Shishkin obviously stands out but all eyes will be on Sir Gino in the earlier race to see if Henderson is firing. He hasn’t really ran that many horses recently so hard to put a finger on his form. Shishkin could easily threaten if at his best but don’t rule out Corbetts Cross who was impressive at Cheltenham last month. He stays all day and will keep galloping hopefully behind the jolly.

I’m surprised Bob Olinger is as short as he is for this. I know Henry de Bromhead has done well to get him back on track this season winning at Navan and Cheltenham but I still have my doubts about him off the bridle and I’m confident IMPAIRE ET PASSE can get him off it. He was actually behind Bob Olinger when third to State Man at DRF but didn’t run his race that day and was beaten too soon. Freshened up since and stepping back up to 2 and a half miles could see him back to his best so he looks good value.

Luccia ran a cracker when third in the Champion Hurdle and could run well again here but again it is going to come down to Nicky Henderson form and whether Sir Gino and Shiskin have managed to make a mark earlier on the card. Langer Dan is also in here but out of handicap company will be up against it.

It is a shame last years winner Famous Clermont doesn’t line up as he would have been my selection but as a result it now looks wide open. I’m going to chance GABORIOT improving enough to take a hand. He has really improved of late winning 3 of his last 4 and I thought he was impressive at Catterick last month. They have likely been targeting him at this race and at double-figure odds looks worth chancing in an open renewal. I can actually see him being one of the gambles of the race as the yard are in great form too.

Tons of dangers likely headed by Spyglass Hill who was back to winning ways at Haydock when last seen. He is an 11yo but still shouldn’t be overlooked. At a bigger price Romeo Magico could also run well and perhaps hit the frame but this definitely requires another step up on that Down Royal win last month.

I’m really keen on UNEXPECTED PARTY doing the Cheltenham-Aintree double here. Dan Skelton did a great job in getting him well handicapped for the Grand Annual and he made no mistake galloping on strongly to hold off Libberty Hunter. Path D’oroux was back in third and I think the form has a strong look to it. He has gone up 8lb but could easily still be ahead of the handicapper and I see no reason why he won’t go close. Once competitive in a race he has an attitude to die for so as long as he is in with a shout at the last I think he’ll find more than a few others in here.

Path D’oroux who was third to him at Cheltenham could easily be the danger. His second to Madara at DRF before that was a very good run too so hard to rule him out going close again. The other one I fear is Heltenham who arrives on a hat-trick and is such a strong traveller he should be suited by this test.

By now you know I’m not mad about bumpers so a tentative vote goes to HONKY TONK HIGHWAY for Dan and Harry Skelton. This 5yo mare was well backed to make a winning debut at Sandown last month and I get the impression they rate her quite highly. She moved through the race like a nice prospect and stayed on well through the line to win convincingly. She is obviously open to improvement and should run a big race.

Baby Kate is likely to go off favourite for Willie Mullins having won both starts to date. She was nicely on top at Cheltenham when last seen back in November and has likely been put away for this. Of the rest Diva Luna showed a good attitude at Market Rasen and could hit the frame.
