Punchestown 2.30

A tricky opener to kick off the Punchestown Festival with it being a Cross Country Chase for claimers. A tentative vote goes to CASEY WEST who is favourite at the time of writing. This son of Westerner showed a good attitude to beat Dromleigh at Clonmel and before that found Romeo Magico just half a length too strong. That’s form that stacks up and freshened up looks sure to give his running once more.

Three By Two won this last year and was back to form last time so will be the danger if building on that again. De Nordener is another one in form and now under Rules should be competitive. A bit of a guessing game though and not a race to go mad in at all.

Punchestown 2.30

Casey West 7/2

Main danger Three By Two

Punchestown 3.05

This handicap hurdle is wide open so I’ve had an each way go at MOUSEY BROWN at around 25/1 at the time of writing. She carries top-weight but that’s because she arrives eyeing up a hat-trick. She did well to win at Down Royal as she didn’t jump great and then she stayed on strongly to follow up at Fairyhouse again sent off a big price. She has more to come and looks a decent bet.

Montregard is completely unexposed and carries the JP McManus silks. He won at Wetherby and looks the danger for Stan Sheppard. Paddy’s Milestone was fourth behind the selection last time running on well at the finish and is another one to note.

Punchestown 3.05

Mousey Brown 25/1 each way

Main danger Montregard but look out for Paddy’s Milestone too

Punchestown 3.40

After chasing home Ballyburn at the Dublin Racing Festival SLADE STEEL improved again to win the Supreme at Cheltenham last month. He raced on the pace and was keen enough but found plenty towards the business end and was actually going away again at the line.

Mystical Power has come out and won since beating Firefox to frank the form and I think he can confirm those placings here so looks a good bet to justify favouritism. Mystical Power is going the right way so looks the danger once more.

Punchestown 3.40

Slade Steel 2/1 NAP

Main danger Mystical Power

Punchestown 4.15

No surprise to see Daddy Long Legs top the market with Paul Townend on and he should run well but I think BIALYSTOK has gone under the radar somewhat. He is a past C&D winner so likes this track and ran a massive race beaten just half a length at Ayr last time. I rate the winner Favour And Fortune there so I think the form is decent. He is only 1lb higher and I’m confident of him at the very least hitting the frame.

Plenty of dangers again likely headed by the favourite but Rath Gaul Boy with Danny Mullins in the saddle is another one to note as he has won his last two starts. Jasko Des Dames goes handicapping and might have a squeak too.

Punchestown 4.15

Bialystok 14/1 each way LONGSHOT

Main danger Daddy Long Legs but look out for Rath Gaul Boy and Jasko Des Dames as well

Punchestown 4.50

Another race where I’m trying to look away from the top of the market and SERMANDZARAK could be decent value. He looked a promising horse finishing second to Colcannon (runs in the lucky last) and he was actually awarded that race in the stewards room as the winner weighed in light. He’ll need to improve again to win this but clearly has quite a bright future and is a bit overpriced.

Mullins has the favourite in King Rasko Grey and he cost €250,000 so is probably the danger. Garahon also catches the eye on breeding and no surprise to see him quite prominent in the betting as well.

Punchestown 4.50

Sermandzarak 8/1 each way

Main dangers King Rasko Grey and Garahon

Punchestown 5.25

I’m surprised Dinoblue is so short for this. She obviously has solid claims after bumping into El Fabiolo at the Dublin Racing Festival and then pushing Limerick Lace all the way to the line at Cheltenham but this is a good race. The market is largely overlooking CAPTAIN GUINNESS despite him winning the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last month. I know El Fabiolo pulled up and Edwardstone fell but he still battled on gamely and he shouldn’t be 7/1 for this.

Dinoblue is the likely danger but if the ground doesn’t become too testing then Banbridge has to be feared as well. He was poor at Cheltenham but the ground was testing. If they avoid the rain he could run quite well.

Punchestown 5.25

Captain Guinness 7/1 each way

Main danger Dinoblue but keep an eye on the weather for Banbridge

Punchestown 6.00

I rate Fact To File highly so for MONTY’S STAR to get within 4 lengths of that horse in the Brown Advisory wasn’t a bad effort at all. He is unexposed over fences having only had 3 starts and should continue improving for a while yet. This is competitive but I do think he is the most likely winner so no surprise to see him just shading favouritism.

Spillane’s Tower clearly has a big engine winning well at Fairyhouse but he needs to brush up his jumping if he is to win again. Embassy Gardens is also respected.

Punchestown 6.00

Monty’s Star 11/4 NEXT BEST

Main danger Spillane’s Tower

Punchestown 6.35

Another bumper where Mullins has the favourite but I’m happy to oppose at the prices and COLCANNON could be the way to go for Noel Meade. This horse obviously won impressively at this track but was demoted after the rider weighed in light. I know he was beaten at odds-on at Thurles last time but he had excuses and back at this venue I think he’ll bounce back and looks good value to do so.

Unknown Entity will likely go off favourite and he is just that having only run once in a maiden point. He is very well related so should take a bit of beating. Putapoundinthejar should improve and is another one who enters calculations.

Punchestown 6.35

Colcannon 13/2 each way

Main danger Unknown Entity and look out for Putapoundinthejar
