Epsom 2.00
I will be at Epsom on Friday and I’m looking forward to seeing NEW CHARTER in the flesh for Richard Hannon. This New Bay filly probably went into plenty of Notebooks when a good second on debut at Newmarket. She was beaten 2 and a half lengths but looked to bump into a smart one from the Charlie Appleby yard in the shape of Mountain Breeze. She came a length and a half clear from the third and the field was well strung out in behind.
We don’t know the strength of the form yet as only Naina has run since but she finished ninth and she has been beat just half a length so possibly a good sign. I think it’ll work out well and if she improves as expected she should win this. Megalithic also looked promising on debut and is the danger.
A fiercely competitive renewal which is to be expected. If the ground comes up on the softer side then I do like AL MUBHIR for William Haggas. This 5yo by Frankel goes well in testing ground and has run well both starts so far this season. He went down just a neck on reappearance doing some really good late work and then was given too much to do at York but wasn’t beaten too far. If things drop right he could have a big say in this.
Finn’s Charm represents last years winning connections and he should be spot on for this following his reappearance sixth at Chester so he looks the danger. I will be on course and I may well have an each way saver as he is quite a decent price at the time of writing.
Epsom 3.10
The last time EMILY UPJOHN was seen at Epsom she ran out an impressive winner of this race staying on strongly to see off Westover and co. I know she wasn’t at her best after that but she didn’t run badly in Dubai on return and freshened up again with this in mind I think she’ll be difficult to beat.
Luxembourg is a good yardstick and if bouncing back looks the one to chase her home. The other 3 look up against it on all known form.
Epsom 3.45
I respect the Karl Burke pair Bolster and Liberty Lane as they could both go close in this but at a slightly bigger price I do think DERRY LAD is going to run a big race. He was an eye-catcher when third at Naas last time and off the same mark with Hayley Turner getting the leg up he could run a massive race.
Of the two Karl Burke runners Liberty Lane is probably the one I fear most as he impressed winning at Newmarket and could still have more to come. Bolster lacks experience but is also quite promising.
Epsom 4.30
Aidan O’Brien has won the Oaks 3 times in the last 4 years and YLANG YLANG looks to have an obvious chance of improving on that Guineas run to win this. She is the choice of Ryan Moore and shaped as though she’d love going up to a mile and a half beaten just a length at Newmarket. She is proven in soft ground too which could be a big plus.
Stablemate Rubies Are Red might chase her home to give Aidan O’Brien a 1-2 this year. Secret Satire impressed winning the Musidora and that form has been franked since so she could also run a nice race.
Another case where if the ground comes up on the softer side then ZOUM ZOUM will be hard to beat. He went 3-3 as a 2yo with two of those wins coming in heavy ground. He returned with a very solid effort going down just over a length into second at Newbury. His form stacks up and if improving again he is a big player.
Balmacara is on a hat-trick and is clearly going the right way. He needs to improve again to get involved here but looks the danger. Pandora’s Gift is also a nice filly and she travels strongly so should get competitive too.
Epsom 5.40
Dark Thirty made a winning reappearance and then a slow start cost him at Newmarket so he should go well but MISSION TO MOON is preferred. This colt was well backed to make a winning return at Goodwood and didn’t disappoint staying on strongly to edge out Fair Angellica. That filly has since won well at Kempton to frank the form so a 4lb rise for that win could easily prove lenient for the selection. He is unexposed having only had 6 starts and just a couple in handicaps so should go on improving for a while yet.
Dark Thirty does look the biggest danger but Spanish Star shouldn’t be entirely ruled out as he did win this last year beating Darkness and Marlay Park and is actually 1lb lower this time around.
Epsom 5.40
Main danger Dark Thirty but look out for Spanish Star who won this last year
