Newmarket 1.50
A wide open handicap to kick off and I’m keen to chance TRAVOLTA at a double-figure price. He didn’t show much as a 2yo but things have clicked this season with blinkers applied winning a maiden at Wolverhampton and then following up impressively on handicap debut at Sandown last month. A 9lb hike won’t make life easy but he has more to come especially over this trip.
Plenty of dangers likely headed by Royal Power who I think will end up going off favourite for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. He was third behind Meydaan at Goodwood on reappearance and now handicapping should run well despite a stiff enough opening mark.
It doesn’t get any easier over at York for a big field handicap now and BILLYB should give us a decent run for our money. He landed a big gamble winning at Beverley on penultimate start and then went down less than 2 lengths into second at Carlisle over a mile last month. Back down to 7f off a mark of 83 I think he has another big effort in him. They should go hard here so I expect him to get a good target to aim at and if he settles early on he will be one of those finishing best with a bit of luck.
Silver Samurai showed a good attitude to prevail by a short head at Doncaster last time and was second to Brewing at Kempton before that so looks the danger. Plenty of others in with chances too with the hat-trick seeking Tolstoy feared despite a further 6lb and Catch The Paddy also capable of getting competitive off the back of that second behind Elnajmm at Newcastle last month.
Newmarket 2.25
Heavens Gate impressed winning in good style at the Curragh and then ran a big race to finish third behind stablemate Fairy Godmother in the Albany at Royal Ascot last month. That should turn out to be pretty decent form in time so I expect her to be popular but MIGHTY ERIU does look the value play here. She chased home Tunbridge Wells on debut at the Curragh and then improved again to finish second in the Queen Mary Stakes behind Leovanni last month. She should enjoy going back up to 6f and looked primed to go close.
Of the rest Mountain Breeze looked a nice prospect winning her first two starts and then was fourth in the Albany so on that form must enter calculations too as I think she is probably better than what she showed there too.
York 2.40
Plenty of these arriving in winning form so it looks a good race on paper but I’m keen to keep UNEQUAL LOVE on side. This Dutch Art filly was progressive as a 3yo winning 4 times and she picked up where she left off this season winning 2 of her last 3 now. She impressed with how strongly she ran on to win the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last month and with potential to do better again I think she can follow up against these.
Raqiya made a winning reappearance at Salisbury showing a smart turn of foot and might be the biggest danger to the selection if improving again. Adaay In Devon is likeable and shouldn’t be ignored either as she doesn’t know how to run a bad race.
Newmarket 3.00
12 horses heading to post but hard to rule any out with great confidence. I’m going to chance TIDES OF WAR running well for David Simcock. He found himself back in the winners enclosure scoring at Goodwood on return back in May and a 4lb rise for that shouldn’t prevent him going close against these. It is definitely a better race but the hood going back on seemed to help last time and on his old form he is still well treated.
Bague D’or looked good winning at Newmarket and then seemed unsuited by the drop in trip when down the field in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot last month. This track and trip should suit him better and he is the obvious danger.
After going down just a neck in the Guineas PORTA FORTUNA took her form up another notch to win the Coronation Stakes impressively at Royal Ascot last month. She is looking a progressive filly now and if in the same form again she should have a great chance to follow up against these.
Running Lion bounced back with a convincing win in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes last month and is the obvious danger. A Lilac Rolla chased home Fallen Angel in the Irish Guineas and is also respected.
We don’t know a great deal about these so hard to be massively confident but FIELD OF GOLD did run an eye-catching race on debut and with improvement expected could have a decent chance of going a couple of places better and getting off the mark. He was beaten less than 3 lengths and just shaped as though he’d know a lot more next time out.
Mount Kilimanjaro was only midfield on debut in a maiden at Leopardstown but he should improve plenty and could end up being the danger. Mothecombe is an interesting debutant so watch the market closely on that one.
Things have really clicked for METABOLT this season and he looks better than ever right now. He left his reappearance run behind to win gamely at Leicester and then followed up stretching back out to a mile at Windsor last month. He has only won by a head and a neck the last twice so as a result still looks well handicapped off a mark of 90 and should be able to complete the hat-trick. Rossa Ryan is riding on the crest of a wave at the moment too so there is lots to like.
Ezra Cee got off the mark at Windsor when last seen and has more to come now sent handicapping so could emerge as the danger. Zouzanna ran well when third at Newbury last month and is another one I expect to get competitive. Waiting All Night has also been holding his form well so is also respected.
I’m confident NO HALF MEASURES is the one to beat in the lucky last. She went close on debut and then landed a hat-trick of wins including an impressive performance at Goodwood on handicap debut. She has done little wrong since finishing a close-up fifth behind Adaay In Devon in a good race at Sandown and then went down narrowly in third at Royal Ascot last month. This is easier and she can improve again so she is hard to oppose.
Good Good Good is 2-2 and won as she should have at Leicester last month. Her opening mark is no gift but she is clearly promising and she looks the danger. Hedge Fund needs to settle better but could be best of the rest.
