Ayr 1.15
I feel like ARAGON CASTLE has been a bit unlucky since winning readily at Hamilton back in July. He stumbled badly leaving the stalls and sprawled at the start when fifth at Goodwood so I wouldn’t judge him too harshly on that and then he was just too keen but kept on well when sixth at York. He has more to offer off this mark and I expect him to get involved here.
Mirsky has top-weight but probably deservedly so off the back of that half a length second to Thunder Run at York. If he builds on that he will be hard to beat and is the danger. Apiarist has been performing creditably too and has a squeak as well.
This looks a great opportunity on paper for the likeable ANNAF to bounce back. He suffered a luckless passage at Haydock earlier in the month and is a great deal better than that. Prior to that disappointment he had won 3 of his last 4 and eased in grade here back down to a Group 3 it is no surprise to see him favourite to take this out.
The danger could be Albasheer depending on how much rain we get. He is at his best when it is rattling fast and I know we are due some thunderstorms so see what the weather does. If it softens he’ll be a big drifter. Of the rest Relief Rally doesn’t have huge scope but could go well.
Ayr 1.50
I’m confident ENFJAAR is good value in the betting here at 4/1. This son of Lope De Vega was denied the hat-trick just by a neck at Goodwood and then was highly tried at York last month. Down in grade in calmer waters here and stepping up in trip are both positives and I think his class could tell against this field.
Phantom Flight beat Al Aasy at Newbury but I wouldn’t go crazy about that as the second was given a bit of a shocker. He did run well behind See The Fire last time at York so might still be the danger. Persica is also respected especially at this level.
Newbury 2.05
Sea The Moon filly WAXING GIBBOUS could run well here. She improved on that Doncaster second to win at this track back in May and has done little wrong in defeat since going down a neck at Kempton and then a neck again at Haydock. I think she has more to come as her stamina is drawn out and she is a bit underestimated here as I’d have her shorter.
Lieber Power is likeable and has recent form figures of 12122 so hard to see how he doesn’t give the selection most to think about. At the prices you could even back both against the field. Chillingham also has the profile to run well so is also feared.
Ayr 2.25
The Ayr Silver Cup is always fiercely competitive and it is no different this season with 23 heading to post. I do think BROOKLYN NINE NINE can give us a good run for our money. He is down the bottom of the weights and this 4yo was denied just a neck at Ascot when last seen. He had caught the eye a few times before that too and back over 6f off the same mark ticks plenty of boxes.
Alfa Kellenic is clearly mega progressive having won her last 5 now but a 5lb penalty in a race like this must make her a shade vulnerable. Kings Merchant has won 2 of his last 3 so comes here thriving but is also burdened with a penalty. That might leave Two Tribes as the danger especially if the rain comes.
Another tricky race but INVOLVEMENT was heavily backed at Sandown last month and might be able to reward followers this time around. He ran well to finish third and was only beaten half a length but looked like he needed a stronger gallop. There is plenty of pace on with the likes of Quietness, Bolster and Houstonn all going forward so it could pan out perfectly.
Flying Frontier had the selection in behind last time so does look the danger but he can be a bit hit and miss so that would be concerning. At a monster price Laafi could bounce back with a big run so keep an eye on that one.
Sky Majesty could be a bit of a freak and if she wins then fair play but at 3/1 in a race like this I’ve got to take a chance on something at an each way price and ENGLEMERE fits the bills. She is obviously more exposed than most in here but her form is rock solid and even that fourth behind Aesterius in France is working out well so she could go close in this.
I do think the jolly Sky Majesty is the danger as she bids to make it 2-2 but also Royalty Bay is worth a mention. She is also lightly raced and is better than what she showed at Goodwood last month.
The way POWERFUL GLORY won on debut at Pontefract last month was mightily impressive and it is no surprise to see Richard Fahey pitch him into Group company straight away off the back of that. He looked to have a perfect blend of speed and stamina and won as he liked. This is obviously a great deal tougher but he is a really exciting individual an should take a lot of beating.
Shadow Of Light won his first two starts before going down less than a length at York and looks the obvious danger but that Gimcrack form has taken a few knocks since and perhaps isn’t as strong as it first looked.
I always love having a punt in the Ayr Gold Cup and this year I’m keen on AMERICAN AFFAIR going close. He is being heavily backed at the time of writing so could end up going off favourite. He impressed winning at Doncaster last week and is clearly thriving. He has been all season as he has 3 wins to his name and as of yet hasn’t run a bad race He clocked a good speed figure last time and does seem the one to beat.
Billyjoh might be the danger despite being around 14/1 in the betting. He was below par at York but his Goodwood form is right up there and we know he is capable in these big field handicaps. Both Rohaan and Ramazan are also worth mentioning and complete the shortlist.
