When last seen at Listed level SPIRITUAL ran out a convincing winner making all the running at Sandown in the Coral Distaff back in July. I know she has been beaten in France since and then in Group company at Sandown last month but she wasn’t disgraced on either occasion and now back down in grade and in a small field she might be able to go forward and gallop these into submission.
Sirona is also a talented filly and she could be the one to give her most to think about off the back of that short head second in France at the start of the month. Her trainer is in good form and she should run her race. Fair Point won at Ascot when last seen and is also feared.
Time Lock should run well for Harry Charlton but I don’t want to back her at a short price and I’m drawn to FRANCOPHONE at around 12/1 in the betting. She is yet to try this trip but I have a feeling it could see her improve again and if she gets into a decent rhythm she might prove tough to pass in the closing stages especially in this ground. She has been highly tried the last twice and will find this easier.
I do see the favourite Time Lock as the danger but Mistral Star also deserves a mention as she ran well in the Yorkshire Oaks last month and would be a big player if building on that. Place Of Safety has been nibbled at but she needs to improve a fair bit to get involved in this.
Newmarket 2.25
Francophone 12/1 each way LONGSHOT
Main danger Time Lock but look out for Mistral Star too
Newmarket 3.00
I can’t wait to see FORMAL out again for Sir Michael Stoute. This filly by Dubawi is a perfect 2-2 after winning in the style of a promising horse on debut at Newbury and then following up at Leicester earlier this month. Both pieces of form have been franked since and she is sure to improve again herself. This is tougher but she definitely falls into the ‘could be anything’ category and is the one to beat.
Ecstatic is the pick of Ryan Moore and looks the danger. She impressed winning at Tipperary last month and then is probably better than what she showed in the May Hill. It is still early days so don’t write her off. Stablemate Bubbling is also likely to run well under Sean Levey.
Newmarket 3.35
With 3 wins from 5 starts this season ICE MAX is looking progressive now and with the ground easing he could have a big say in the outcome here. He stayed on strongly to beat Poker Face quite convincingly in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood last month and he looks a horse firmly on the upgrade right now. He has a 3lb penalty but I still think he could be the one to beat.
Obviously Poker Face has form that ties in closely with the selection and is a good horse with cut in the ground. He has run well in Ireland since so the form has been boosted in some respect. Lead Artist should appreciate stepping back up to a mile and might even be a greater threat.
