Haydock 1.15
This will take quite a big performance to win off top weight but STEEL ALLY definitely has a touch of class about him and that was a highly encouraging reappearance run at Ffos Las. He is up 3lb but was only beaten a length by a nice horse and should come on plenty so big chance.
Beat The Bat is unexposed now sent handicapping and looks a big danger but the lack of a run was enough for me to sway with the selection and also at a bigger price. Josh The Boss bolted up in the Silver Trophy and that form is red-hot so he is another one to note but is favourite.
At some point Pic D’orhy is going to start regressing and it tends to happen more in these French recruits. He is such a short price for this I’m keen to try and oppose and DASHEL DRASHER might just be up to the task. He is so likeable and even without a run could pose a big threat. He gets 6lb as well.
Pic D’orhy is still the danger given the lack of strength in depth but Flegmatik isn’t completely out of it. With him it depends if his jumping passes the test but he has had a couple of spins at Chepstow and here behind Chianti Classico and might go better than a 20/1 chance.
Haydock 1.50
I have seen a lot of people trying to crab IROKO as his end of season target has been highlighted as the Grand National. The facts are he is clear on official ratings and even if half fit might be good enough to beat these. There should be plenty of pace on too so it could pan out perfectly for him.
Trelawne fell in the Ultima at Cheltenham but was sent off favourite for that and still has potential. If he puts in a clean round of jumping he is the danger. Deafening Silence can still do better too so he might get competitive as well.
Punchestown 2.10
State Man should be winning this but I feel like we still haven’t seen the best of BRIGHTERDAYSAHEAD and if she improves again she could be a serious player. She impressed winning at Down Royal at the start of the month. She has fitness on side and will be hitting the line hard so definite chance.
The fav State Man will go off the front and probably be hard to catch but for whatever reason I haven’t always been entirely convinced by him and at 1/3 on reappearance now might be the time to try and get him beat and the mare looks good value.
Haydock 2.30
It is a shame Doyen Quest has come out but I did half expect that and stablemate CATCH HIM DERRY could prove hard to beat now. He looks seriously progressive and won hard on the bridle at Newton Abbot on return. The more rain the better and he should have plenty more to come yet.
One Big Bang was beaten less than 2 lengths at Newton Abbot on return last month and was progressive last season so with more to come definitely looks the danger. Patriotik is also a bit of a lurker after running well to finish fifth in the Silver Trophy on return which has worked out well.
Ascot 2.45
I have always thought a fair bit of BLUEKING D’OROUX and I can see him running a big race in this. He has been a big drifter though now out to 4/1 which is a bit concerning. He was last seen finishing behind Impaire Et Passe at Sandown. His form was decent before that and he can do better.
Thunder Rock is a horse to catch fresh as he looked impressive winning at Carlisle this time last year. If he gets into a nice rhythm he is a threat to all. Golden Ace is favourite but I think she is opposable in these deeper waters.
Haydock 3.05
The race of the day now! I’m surprised GREY DAWNING has been as weak as he has in the betting for this. He took really well to fences last season and impressed reversing form with Ginny’s Destiny in the Turners at the Festival. He was beat at Aintree but had excuses and has potential to do better again.
Venetia Williams seems to be hitting form so Royale Pagaille is a big danger. He obviously won it last year and is a very talented horse but is a 10yo now and is up against an improving type in the selection. Limerick Lace will enjoy conditions and looks best of the rest.
Ascot 3.20
The likeable MARTATOR looks one of the bets of the day at Ascot. This 7yo has gone from strength to strength winning 3 in a row to cap off last season and then he impressed again picking up where he left off to score impressively at this track at the start of the month. More to come so hard to oppose.
Sans Bruit shaped well when third in the Haldon Gold Cup behind Jpr One and looks the danger if building on that as it is decent form with Djelo in there too. Triple Trade is another one to note if he gets jumping as he can finish strongly.
Haydock 3.40
Another Venetia Williams horse I’m taking a chance on in the lucky last in the shape of FONTAINE COLLONGES. She really impressed bolting up at Wetherby on penultimate start and then had excuses when down the field on final outing at Warwick. She has won fresh before and is still lightly raced.
Plenty of dangers probably headed by Le Milos who was a big improver over fences a couple of years ago and back down the weights looks off a handy mark now. Pepe Le Moko is another one that could be smuggled into this and is worthy of a second look.
