Newbury 1.54
There are a few reasons why I think SPRING NOTE is overpriced. She is 3-3 at this track and also it has paid to race prominently in this race over the years (just one hold up winner in the last 6 years). Also pays to look away from the top of the market so she ticks plenty of boxes. I wouldn’t judge her too harshly on that Cheltenham run when last seen and back at this venue off a mark of 129 she should give us a good run for our money.
Inthewaterside is probably the danger as he is clearly very talented and likely well handicapped but doesn’t always channel it in the right direction. It is still relatively early days though so he could come good again here. Guard The Moon is another one worth noting.
It is a shame Constitution Hill isn’t reappearing here but as a result SIR GINO remains over hurdles and I’m expecting him to take an awful lot of beating. He is a perfect 3-3 under Rules and was particularly impressive putting Kargese in her place at Aintree when last seen (Kalif Du Berlais back in third).
He obviously thrashed Burdett Road at Cheltenham before that and we know that horse has won the Greatwood so is a decent individual. He is still open to plenty more improvement and the ground will suit him better than main danger Mystical Power.
Newbury 2.25
I really feel like LIARI is cracking value here at 7/1! He shaped to me as though he’d come on plenty for the run when third at Chepstow. He can definitely jump better than that too and off a mark of 130 with a run under his belt I’ll be surprised if he isn’t a well handicapped horse.
There isn’t a huge amount of pace on so I think he’ll be ridden forward and he might always be in the box seat. Aston Martini was only beaten narrowly at Bangor by a good horse and looks the danger.
Newbury 3.00
In hindsight that was a really good run from BROADWAY BOY to finish third behind Senior Chief on return last month. He stuck to the task well but clearly needed the run. I expect him to step forward plenty from that and he looks a massive player here. He gets a big swing in the weights with Henry de Bromhead’s 7yo so I expect him to reverse that form now.
If Colonel Harry stays he will be a danger but Kandoo Kid is another one I can see going well following a wind op.
Newcastle 3.20
Backed another double-figure price here in BLACKJACK MAGIC. He fell at Kempton and was pulled up at Punchestown so not an obvious one by any means but his record fresh speaks volumes and he was impressive beating Threeunderthrufive in the Badger Beer on return last year. He is 4lb higher but this mark should be manageable and he could surprise a few.
The Changing Man is the obvious one if putting in a clear round of jumping but obviously favourite now. Neon Moon is the other one I expect to get competitive.
Newbury 3.35
It is hard to go against the thriving IMPERIAL SAINT here. He ended last season on a high winning over hurdles at Ffos Las and then made a winning start over fences albeit somewhat fortunately at Aintree. He proved that was no fluke bolting up last time though and with further improvement to come may well be capable of defying a further 10lb rise.
Issar D’airy bumped into Martator at Ascot on reappearance and if stepping forward from that could be the danger. Real Stone is a big price but might run better than his odds suggest.
