Sandown 1.15
I know HENRI THE SECOND has to get back on track but he could be good value to take this. His jumping just didn’t hold up over fences here on sole start last season and then he looked in need of the run when fourth here on return last month. He lacked fluency back over hurdles and got outpaced before running on. He has been dropped 2lb and stretching out in trip could get back on track.
Dubrovnik Harry ran a pleasing race when third to Saint Davy here on final start and retains potential so looks the danger. Operation Manna was behind the latter here on penultimate start but is another one to note as well.
I was strongly in the SPRINGWELL BAY camp at Cheltenham last month and while he finished nearer last than first there was still a fair bit of promise in that run. This softer ground should suit and the drop back to 2 and a half miles also looks firmly in his favour. He is still open to further improvement on what is just his third start over fences and I still think he has the potential to be a smart operator in this discipline.
Richmond Lake ran well in the Grand Sefton behind King Turgeon and that is form that is working out well so he looks the danger. Grandads Cottage has won fresh before and is another one who could have a squeak.
Sandown 1.50
This is no easy task but L’EAU DU SUD has been so impressive since going over fences and if he gets into a nice rhythm he will be hard to beat. He is such a strong travelling horse so this test should suit and I think he’ll just keep pilling on the pressure on the others. The Skelton’s have made no secret how highly they regard him so they will be hopeful of him completing the hat-trick.
Down Memory Lane made a winning chase debut at Navan last month despite taking a walk in the market. He is clearly a nice horse but this will test his jumping. He has more to come but could run a big race without being good enough. Touch Me Not isn’t out of it either but they won’t hang about here and he’ll need to step forward again.
Aintree 2.07
The Becher is always a race I love to watch and bet in and this looks a great renewal. The likeable and progrssive KING TURGEON is understandably favourite after winning the Grand Sefton impressively. His win at Chepstow before that is also working out particularly well so wherever you look his form is stacking up. He is up 6lb again but likely has more improvement to come and should go in again.
Chianti Classico had no problem shouldering a big weight to victory at Ascot on return and despite a 5lb rise should get seriously competitive again. Cruz Control needed the run on return and should be spot on for this now and is another one I can see getting competitive. Gaboriot shouldn’t be underestimated either in a fiercely competitive renewal.
Sandown 2.25
I’d want to see KABRAL DU MATHAN settle better as this is obviously a stronger race but the way he won at Kempton on return last month was impressively and he is yet to taste defeat. He is clearly a smart individual and Nicholls feels he is good enough to come here. Cobden gets the leg back up and I think he can win again.
Altobelli has promised plenty but doesn’t have the best strike rate and might flatter to deceive again here. He has work to do to turn form around with Knickerbockerglory who is my idea of the main danger. He was pulled up at Plumpton on final start but goes well fresh and is also well suited by this track so should get competitive.
Sandown 3.00
It was very much job done for JONBON at Cheltenham last month where he had Boothill and Edwardstone held in behind. He seemed to need the run there and will come on plenty. He was impressive beating Edwardstone in this last year and I think that is how it will play out again. He is top-rated and I don’t see an upset happening.
Quilixios lowered the colours of Marine Nationale on return at Naas last month but I don’t think the latter finished his race off with any conviction so I wouldn’t read too much into that. In a match bet I’d probably say Edwardstone would be decent value in a match bet against the Irish raider. Jpr One also deserves a mention after winning the Haldon Gold Cup but this is a big step up from that.
Aintree 3.17
This is arguably the most competitive race of the day so don’t go mad but I do think SANTOS BLUE is overpriced for Dan Skelton. This 7yo looked progressive towards the end of last season winning 2 of his last 3 and he showed a good attitude to win on final outing at Uttoxeter. We know he goes well fresh and despite a 4lb rise he could run a big race.
Tamar Bridge ran a very nice race back from nearly 700 days off to finish second at Uttoxeter and if building on that could emerge as the danger. At a big price Country Park ran really well at Cheltenham last month briefly looking the winner before being edged out by Ace Of Spades. If building on that he could also get involved.
Aintree 3.17
Santos Blue 8/1 each way LONGSHOT
Main danger Tamar Bridge but look out for Country Park too
Sandown 3.35
I know BROKEN HALO doesn’t always look the most straightforward but he is still lightly raced for his age and he is definitely interesting here back from a break following a wind op. He has been dropped a couple of pounds too after pulling up at Ayr on final outing. He was in winning form before that and if bouncing back could get seriously competitive.
Montgomery shouldn’t be judged too harshly on that final run at Ayr as he had won his first 3 starts over fences before that. He could bounce back with the yard going well and be the danger. Mr Vango is likely to go off favourite but no juice in his price and I think he could be opposable anyway. Ballygrifincottage is also respected if putting in a clear round.
