Royal Ascot Day 5
Royal Ascot always lives up to the hype and it has been another terrific week and a great advert for racing in Britain. We’re not done yet though as we have the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes to come and it looks an exciting renewal with the French horse Lazzat looking to steal the show. Inisherin should have something to say about that though for Kevin Ryan! Plenty more exciting races on the agenda including the Chesham, Hardwicke and Jersey Stakes as well as some more fiercely competitive handicaps including the Wokingham and the Golden Gates Stakes. Let’s go out on a high!
Frankel colt TREANMOR cost a whopping 2,000,000 euros as a yearling which is insane when you think about it. He did however make a perfect start winning by 4 lengths on debut at Newmarket. He did that very easily and while the form has taken a few knocks I’d be confident he’ll leave that behind especially stretching out to 7f now. He is open to any amount of improvement and just like Pinatubo back in 2019 I think he’ll win the Chesham for Charlie Appleby.
Aidan O’Brien won the race last year with Bedtime Story and saddles the main danger Moments Of Joy. This filly by Justify also made a bright start winning on debut at Leopardstown. She can improve again and should give the selection a race at least. Ulysses colt Humidity will probably do better over a mile but also made a winning start at Newbury and that form has worked out well since so not ignored either. It could be a decent renewal with some exciting horses on show.
The globetrotting REBEL’S ROMANCE must have a great chance of landing the Hardwicke. He showed a great attitude to win at York last month and has now won 4 of his last 5 starts. He certainly knows where the winning post is and dropping back to a mile and a half looks a good move if anything. His form from earlier in the season beating The Foxes is stacking up and he is definitely the most likely winner here.
Back up in trip Al Riffa could emerge as the danger. He wasn’t disgraced over a mile and a quarter behind Sosie in France last month and should go well but this fast ground is a bit of a worry. Space Legend ran below par at Chester but this track will suit better and he could bounce back and run well too.
French raider Lazzat is likely to be popular for this but surely there is a worry over this rattling fast ground? He is still feared but I’m going to take him on with the tough and likeable INISHERIN for Kevin Ryan. This colt won at York on return despite looking like he’d tighten up for the run. He won the Commonwealth Cup at this meeting last year so loves this track and should be hard to beat.
It is not just a two horse race though as Satono Reve comes over from Japan. He bumped into Ka Ying Risiing at Sha Tin when last seen and could be capable of mixing it with these if that form translates. Aidan O’Brien hasn’t won this since 2018 with Merchant Navy but has a solid shout this year with Storm Boy. He blew out on stable debut at the Curragh but should bounce back and could have a say too.
I tipped the winner in this last year with Haatem and I’d say REMMOOZ is definitely one of my better bets of the day again this year. This well bred colt by Blue Point overcame inexperience to make a winning start at Doncaster back in April and then followed up impressively at the same venue last time really kicking away late on. He is quite an exciting prospect and is a colt I want to keep firmly on side for now.
This is competitive though so definitely a few dangers likely headed by Comanche Brave for Donnacha O’Brien. This colt by Wootton Bassett was behind Field Of Gold in the Irish Guineas but had run a big race narrowly beaten by Henri Matisse before that. If bouncing back down in grade he could be the danger. Marvelman bumped into Cosmic Year at Newmarket and also has potential so is feared as well.
There are some progressive types in here but JARRAAF definitely stands out as being a bit of value at 9/1 at the time of writing. This colt loves this track having won his first two starts at this venue last year. He ran huge beaten just a length in a Group 3 here back in October and wasn’t disgraced on return at Salisbury last month. He was only beaten a length and should come on plenty for the run. Back in handicap company and returned to this venue he could definitely surprise a few.
More Thunder seems to be going from strength to strength so looks a deserved favourite for William Haggas. He showed a good attitude to get on top in the final stride at Newmarket and this stiff 6f looks perfect for him. At a huge price Orazio likes it here too and if getting the gaps could be in the mix too.
I also tipped the winner of this race last year with Hand Of God doing the business. I really like SERAPH GABRIEL for Ralph Beckett. This Saxon Warrior colt looked good winning at Lingfield as a 2yo and has been lightly raced since. I thought he was unlucky not to win at Sandown last time struggling to see daylight before running home strongly. The winner Fifth Column ran well in the Britannia earlier in the week so the form looks decent enough. He has more to come now tackling a mile and a quarter and looks the one to beat.
Frankel colt Sallaal has won 2 from 3 and was firmly on top at Hamilton last month. Both the second and third have won since so now handicapping up in trip could have something up his sleeve. Best Secret is also on the upgrade and could be another one that gets competitive at the business end.
Trainer Willie Mullins often targets this race having won it with Stratum back in 2021 and 2022. He has odds-on favourite SOBER this year and his case looks an obvious one. He is by Camelot and impressed winning on debut for this yard over hurdles at Killarney last month. Back on the Flat he looks to have major claims of following up and Ryan Moore is obviously an eye-catching jockey booking. I don’t think this will take much winning this year so his price is hardly surprising.
Wild Waves did well last year and despite failing to make an impact in two starts this season he could bounce back and be the danger. I think this trip will suit him well so expect a big run. At a bigger price Trooper Bisdee shaped like he’d come on for the run when fifth at Goodwood and can do better so might be worth an each way saver for Sir Mark Prescott.
