Royal Ascot Day 4
Friday looks the day where class could come to the fore. There are a few short-priced favourites on the card but, unlike some years, I think they deserve to be where they are in the market. The Coronation Stakes and King Edward VII both look like races that could throw up future Group 1 stars, while the handicaps offer the chance to land a decent-priced winner if we can get one or two right. I've got a strong opinion on the final three races in particular.
I've picked out my best bets for Day 4 below, including my NAP and NEXT BEST, plus a few value plays at bigger prices.
Sometimes the obvious one is the right one and that's how I feel about SUN GODDESS. Her Curragh win was the sort of performance that immediately catches the eye and she looks a filly with a bright future. The way she travelled and quickened suggested she's already operating at a very high level for this stage of her career.
There are a few promising types lining up against her but I think she could simply be better than them.
This is one of the trickiest Group 1 races of the week and I don't want to be taking a short price. WISE APPROACH has frustrated people this season but that means we're finally getting a price worth taking.
If he rediscovers the level of form we know he's capable of, he has every chance of outrunning odds of 12/1. This feels like a race where taking a chance on talent rather than recent form could pay off.
I'm a big fan of progressive handicappers and WARRANT HOLDER fits the bill perfectly. He's done everything asked of him lately and still looks like there's more improvement to come. The step back up in trip should suit and I was expecting him to be shorter in the betting.
When I see one improving at this rate, I always want to keep him on side until the handicapper catches up.
I kept faith with PRECISE in the Irish Guineas and she rewarded that confidence in style. She has the look of a filly who is only scratching the surface of her ability and I think she'll prove very hard to beat again.
She has the tactical speed for Ascot, she knows how to win and she's already achieved more than most of these. Sometimes it's best not to overthink things.
This is one of my favourite betting races of the week and SEET has exactly the profile I look for. Lightly raced, improving and making her handicap debut after a couple of convincing wins.
Ryan Moore taking the ride catches the eye and I can see her being strongly supported throughout the day. If she takes another step forward, she'll be right in the mix.
I genuinely think WATER TO WINE could be one of the stars of the meeting.
Everything he's done so far has screamed quality. He has looked better every time we've seen him and I don't think stepping up to a mile and a half will be any issue whatsoever. In fact, it could unlock another chunk of improvement. I rarely say this, but I think this race revolves around him.
The finale looks wide open but WESTPORT is the one I keep coming back to. He's unbeaten, his form keeps getting stronger and I think this stiff five furlongs could actually play to his strengths.
The market has focused elsewhere but I wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the best handicapped horses running on Friday. At 9/1 he's worth chancing each-way.
