ITV Racing Tips: Champions Day Best Bets at Ascot

Champions Day is here and it’s the best card of the autumn. I’ve got a bet in all seven races at Ascot, a NAP I’m really sweet on and a win double to tie it all together.

Tips are opinion, not guarantees. GYTO may earn commission from bet365 links on this page. 18+

WHAT A DAY! Champions Day at Ascot is the big finale of the Flat season and ITV are live from the track. Five Group 1s, a red-hot juvenile race and the Balmoral to finish. It doesn’t get much better than this.

I’ve been through every race with a fine-tooth comb. Below you’ll get my selection, the reasons I like it and the horse I fear most. Every price is clickable and drops the bet straight into your bet365 slip.

Three wins on the bounce and still on the way up. NIGHT IN VEGAS is exactly the type I want to be with in a juvenile race like this. He already has the measure of Satellite Of Love on their Doncaster running and dropping back to six furlongs looks a smart move round here.

Aidan O’Brien took this last year with Mission Central but his only runner Confucius has plenty to find on recent form. I’ll take the unexposed, improving horse at 6/1 each way and let him do the rest.

Main danger: Arapaho Gold Only went down by half a length in Group company at Newbury and has more to come after just a handful of runs. Inner City Blues and Satellite Of Love make up the shortlist.

This one took me a while but I keep coming back to the St Leger winner. HIGHWAYMAN has won his last three and took another big step forward when beating Enceladus at Doncaster. The further he goes the better he looks, so two miles should bring out even more.

Dylan Browne McMonagle in the saddle is a big tick for me too. At 7/2 I’m happy to side with the improver over the established stayers.

Main danger: Gregory Impressive in the Rose Bowl and handles cut, so any rain helps him. Caballo De Mar is thriving after beating Scandinavia in France and Daiquiri Bay could run well at a price.

My NAP of the day and I’m not hiding it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a sprinter win like ALMERAQ did at Haydock. He quickened clear and made a strong field look ordinary. That’s a proper Group 1 horse at the top of his game.

He’s already won at Royal Ascot, he’s unbeaten at this track and he doesn’t mind what the ground does. I struggle to find a negative. He’s 11/10 with bet365 now but I’d not be shocked to see him go off odds-on, so I’d get on early.

Main danger: Coppull Won the Hungerford at Newbury and ran well in the July Cup, so put a line through last time. Binhareer was only beaten a length at York and could sneak into the places at a price.

Why make it hard? KALPANA has won this race two years running and goes for the hat-trick. Her Ascot form reads 312121 so she clearly loves the place.

She’d won four of five before the Arc and then ran a cracker to finish fifth, beaten less than four lengths, in the biggest race in Europe. Drop her back into this company and she’s the one they all have to pass. My Next Best of the day at 5/4.

Main danger: Lilt Won her first two and has been kept in deep water since. Stepping up to a mile and a half for the first time could unlock more. Sparan Nua and Minnie Hauk are both capable on their day.

Gstaad and Talk Of New York will take the money but I don’t think either is bombproof. That’s where the value is, and TEN BOB TONY looks too big at 15/2.

He was right back to his best over a mile when second in the Prix du Moulin and had Gstaad around three lengths behind him that day. Repeat that and he’s bang there. Each way all day long.

Main danger: Talk Of New York Impressive at Newmarket but I have doubts about how much he finds off the bridle. Rayif beat Zeus Olympios last time and arrives in top form too.

Revenge time. Calandagan just got the better of OMBUDSMAN in this race 12 months ago and I fancy that gets put right on Saturday.

He was brilliant beating Minnie Hauk at Royal Ascot and had excuses when only midfield in the Juddmonte at York. Back at Ascot, with the ground drying out all the time, he should be spot on. Calandagan has now lost two of his last three and doesn’t look the same horse. 9/4 will do me.

Main danger: Calandagan Will run his race but has lost his aura. Constitution River has a chance if he settles early, while Almaqam really needed more rain.

The lucky last is the hardest puzzle of the day but I’m sticking with GAVRIEL. This Frankel colt came there cruising in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket last month, got no luck at all in running and finished with plenty left.

Get a clear run this time and he wins. Simple as that. 9/2 each way to finish the day on a high.

Main danger: Scoville Beat Moonfall at Doncaster and has a big shout if he repeats it. Indalo was ninth in the Cambridgeshire but only three lengths behind, so watch him late for a place.

My Champions Day Win Double

I see no reason to try and be clever with the two big favourites. ALMERAQ in the Sprint and KALPANA in the Fillies & Mares are both looking to cap off brilliant seasons and I’m confident they get the job done. Put them together and you get a nice price for two of the strongest bets on the card.

JOE’S VERDICT

ALMERAQ is the bet of the day. If he and KALPANA both oblige we’re in great shape heading into the second half of the card, with TEN BOB TONY and GAVRIEL each way to really make it a big one. LET’S FINISH THE FLAT SEASON IN STYLE!
