Newcastle 4.20 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap (Div 1) (Class 5) 2m1/2f – 8 run

With our first Notebook runner of the day Krazy Paving going in we just need NATALEENA to complete an 11/1 tracker double. There should still be more to come from her especially over this C&D and she gets the vote to come out on top. Le Musee hit a big flat spot before running on strongly at Southwell but I don’t think he’ll get away with that here. He is a big danger and likely to go off fav but I think I’m willing to oppose at the prices. Nearly There has run pretty well in defeat here over shorter and comes into the reckoning. He might be worth a saver to hit the frame at a bigger price. I’ll be surprised if anything else proves good enough to get involved.

Newcastle 4.50 Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap (Div 2) (Class 5) 2m1/2f – 9 run

I thought it was quite a good effort from CALEVADE to run down Champs Inblue over shorter at Chelmsford last month. He has since performed creditably over hurdles when third at Catterick and this stiffer test of stamina should prove right up his street. It’s no surprise to see him backed into favouritism ahead of Bill Cody. The latter made all at Southwell but it’s easier to dominate there and I’ll be surprised if he manages to do that over this track and trip. Lucky Lover Boy completed a hat-trick over hurdles last spring but is 0-8 on the Flat so is opposable. Remember The Days failed to beat a rival home here three weeks ago so has questions to answer. I’ll be surprised if the selection doesn’t get the job done, probably at the main expense of Bill Cody.

Newcastle 5.20 Bombardier ‘March To Your Own Drum’ Apprentice Handicap (Class 6) 1m – 8 run

This is one of the trickiest races of the night so I’ve taken two against the field. LADY ALAVESA is my main play and the market keeps speaking positively about her chances. She has been a bit frustrating to follow (sixteen runs since last win) but finished a good second over C&D 5 days ago and might just be coming to the boil again now. She races off the same mark and the cheekpieces go back on. Cian MacRedmond has also been booked for the ride and claims a handy 5lb. Elusive Heights and Tagur both rate as dangers but I thought at a bigger price INNER CIRCLE was worth covering to run a place. He was a dual 7f winner on the turf last summer and might be a bit of value against some of these.

Another competitive handicap. Lady Of Aran just needs too much to go right for her to win in my opinion so she’s worth opposing. RECKLESS ENDEAVOUR is the one I fancy to go close. He ended a losing run of 22 when winning over C&D last month and with plenty of pace on here he should have a target to aim at again. He was only fourth at Lingfield last time but that run is best forgiven I think and he is taken to bounce back. Glenamoy Lad is the main danger as he is 2-3 over C&D and 6lb lower than for his latest win here in October. I might even end up having a small saver on him so I’ve got two against the field. Others to note include Barrington and Lucky Lodge.

Reckless Endeavour 5/1

Newcastle 6.20 Ladbrokes Where The Nation Plays Handicap (Class 5) 5f – 5 run

On first look this looks between Coast Ofalfujairah and Augustus Caesar but once I dug in further I can definitely see DREAM GAME running well for Ben Haslam. She was beaten just a neck over C&D last time and notched up a decent time on the clock so although this is tougher into a handicap I think she can hold her own and might be a good bit of value to at the very least hit the frame. If my hand was forced between the market principals I would favour Augustus Caesar over Coast Ofalfujairah. It would be a surprise if Blitzle or Feel Good Factor proved good enough to get involved.

Newcastle 6.50 Betway Novice Median Auction Stakes (Class 6) 5f – 4 run

I don’t usually NAP a horse that has run just once for obvious reasons but the time figure LUA DE MEL recorded when winning at Lingfield combined with how well the form has worked out (second and third winning) I think she’s capable of shouldering a 7lb penalty to follow up. Kayat is a danger but he has had a few chances and might always be playing second best here. Ben Curtis should bounce out on the fav and with a bit of luck make all the running. The NAP has been in great form lately so hopefully we can make it 4 winners from our last 5 selections.

Newcastle 7.50 Bombardier Golden Beer Handicap (Class 5) 7f – 14 run

We’ve flagged up a huge Market Mover in the lucky last that we’re siding with in CHOSEN WORLD. He won three times over C&D last winter and was a good third over C&D in December. He could be ready to strike now and the market is certainly suggesting that given he’s been backed from 14/1 into just 11/2. It wouldn’t surprise me if he took a small drift before the off. Just because he’s been backed doesn’t mean he wins though as it is desperately competitive. Merweb ran well when second at Kempton but doesn’t win very often so is probably opposable given his short price. Etikaal is the one I fear most as he finished really well when denied a hat-trick of wins here last month and the return to 7f should help him. Silver Dust comes out well on the figures and is also entitled to get involved.
