Goodwood 1.45 The Boxgrove Handicap Stakes

We have a confident selection for you to kick off the ITV action in SPANISH ANGEL. He took advantage of a good bit of placement to make the breakthrough in a small field at Brighton on his final start and could be off a lenient mark of 81. He is open to plenty of improvement and has been gelded since last seen. He handles the track as went down just a neck on his second run ever so that’s another notable positive. Expected to be a warm order under Oisin Murphy!

Caspian Queen is the obvious danger as she ran a cracker on return only going down narrowly. Should build on that and get involved but I just think the selection is open to greater improvement.

Spanish Angel 7/4 NOTEBOOK

Doncaster 2.00 The Bawtry Handicap

Wide open handicap over the minimum trip at Doncaster and we are siding with one at a price in ORVAR. He has had a wind op and is sitting just 3lb higher than his winning mark. With the pace of the race looking strong it should set up perfectly for him to run on late. As dangers I wouldn’t be surprised if the two at the top of the weights Stake Acclaim and Caspian Prince ran big races based on past exploits.

Goodwood 2.20 The British Stallion Studs EBF Cathedral Stakes (Listed Race)

This looks one of the trickier races of the day so if you need to go and make a cup of tea now might be the time! Gone for one at a price as a result and LYZBETH catches the eye. She goes well fresh and showed that winning a useful 7f Doncaster fillies’ event last season and while she didn’t kick on from that as expected she had some excuses in tough races subsequently where she wasn’t beaten far. Lightly raced so could have more to offer and now might be the time to catch her.

Dangers are a plenty in a race of this nature. Moyassar defied top weight at Newmarket last May but hasn’t ran well since. Back from 11 months off and gelded so comes into the reckoning but too short in the market. Mrs Bouquet is on a roll but she’ll need more in this company. Wise Counsel should do better this season and will be thereabouts.

Doncaster 2.35 The Achilles Stakes (Listed Race)

Unlike the previous race on the card this race looks a lot more clear cut and it is hard to get away from DAKOTA GOLD who was a revelation at sprint trips last season (1211115). He has won at this level and went close in a Group 3 as well. He does have a penalty to overcome but on last seasons form he should have no issue. The only downside for me would be the 253 days off the track but hopefully Michael Dods has him ready to roll.

El Astronaute knows how to win and is probably the biggest danger. Copper Knight has a run under his belt so can’t be ignored either.

Leopardstown 3.00 Saval Beg Stakes (Listed)

TWILIGHT PAYMENT bids to win the Saval Beg again and we think he has a solid chance. He didn’t quite perform when going for some big international targets but this race is well within his grasp again. He is rated the best in the race and if ready to go, he should take all the beating.

Last year he beat Falcon Eight who comes into this with twice the time off and although he is the favourite at the time of writing Dermot Weld hasn’t had a winner since the return of racing and he may well need the run.

Leopardstown 3.00

Twilight Payment 9/4

Doncaster 3.10 The Dearne Handicap Stakes

This looks to revolve around Dansili colt DEREVO. He is unexposed and probably has the most improvement in him. He won two handicaps last season before putting in a poor run to end the campaign. He should have improved from 3 to 4 and even though he hasn’t run, Sir Michael Stoute has his horses in good order (8 winners since the restart).

Fifth Position for Roger Varian is the danger having had a run already with a third at Newcastle and should come on from that.

Doncaster 3.10

Derevo 9/4

Goodwood 3.25 The Emsworth Handicap Stakes

Just three horses go to post now with Bodyline a non runner. That colt by Australia was well backed before coming out. It leaves the door open for GLENTIES in my opinion. This colt has experience on side which could count for plenty. Shaped with plenty of credit when third at Haydock on return. Stayed on well to finish third and the front two look pretty useful. The time they clocked also confirmed that was a good effort. He races off the same mark here and will be fitter now so should take the beating under Joe Fanning. Expecting him to bounce out and be tough to beat.

Bright Eyed Eagle is by Gleneagles and is interesting but he hasn’t been seen for 233 days and was turned over as favourite when last seen and that might be the same case here. Never rule the outsider of the three out so Gibraltar will also get his chance. Hopefully the leader is away and gone by then.

Goodwood 3.25

Glenties 7/4

Doncaster 3.40 The Grand Cup Stakes (Listed Race)

Small field for this Listed event but it is wide open. We are going to take a punt on HASANABAD coming back down in trip after finishing last season with a poor run over two miles. This is his ideal trip and the former Dermot Weld runner could have a bit more to come than some of these especially since being gelded.

Red Verdon should be thereabouts at this level and King’s Advice is probably a fair favourite but we quite like our pick at double the odds (at the time of writing).

Goodwood 3.55 The EBF Cocked Hat Stakes (Listed Race)

An intriguing race up next from Goodwood! Won last year by Private Secretary we only have four runners this year but they are all talented. EMISSARY has to be the selection. He went into my notes after making a winning debut at Wolverhampton in October and is evidently held in high regard. He looks sure to improve and can make a winning return before going onto better things.

Celestran has been backed but I’m not convinced by him. He won at Yarmouth 11 days ago but I think he’s meeting much better horses here and could get found out. Khalifa Sat is actually the one I fancy to chase the selection home. Ran a cracker in that red-hot Salisbury Novice behind Kenzai Warrior and Max Vega and then won impressively here on final start. Trainer likes him a lot so could run well.

Goodwood 3.55

Emissary 6/4

Leopardstown 4.10 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Noblesse Stakes

A fiercely competitive Listed race to finish at Leopardstown. The vote goes to the Jessica Harrington-trained CAMPHOR under Shane Foley. This filly by Camelot has impressed me so far and some of her form stacks up. She is open to improvement and she should be right in the mix here. Any rain will probably help her chance so keep that in mind. Definitely one who could do better this season.

Tons of dangers. Loveisthehigherlaw likely to go off favourite. She is a promising type who won her first two starts before shaping well when fourth in a Listed race at Naas in heavy ground in October. Like the selection will have more to offer! Of the rest Heliac looked progressive last season and the vibes coming out the yard are quite strong for her. May well emerge as the biggest threat.
