York 1.55 John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes (Group 3)

A small field to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday for this Group 3 with just 5 set to line-up. COMMUNIQUE is the highest rated on paper and based on his second at Newmarket just over a week ago looks the one to beat. He didn’t run that well at Ascot but regularly competes at the top level and if showing his best again he should be taking this Group 3.

Moonlight Spirit who marginally heads the market at the time of writing is the main danger, he didn’t run well on return at Ascot but should come on for the run but I would still give Mark Johnston’s gelding the edge.

York 1.55

Communique 11/4

Newbury 2.15 Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed Race)

This is a race where favourites do well and it is hard to get away from METHOD at the head of the market in this renewal. Martyn Meade’s colt was so impressive on debut powering clear by over 4 lengths under Ryan Moore. On the clock that should be sufficient to win this race let alone the natural improvement he will get from racing experience.

Mighty Gurkha impressed before Royal Ascot and put in a decent performance in the Windsor Castle but our selection likely has more scope for improvement and looks a decent chance to make it 2/2.

Newbury 2.15

York 2.30 John Smith’s Cup Handicap Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

Nothing like a 22-runner handicap to pick the winner of so we are having a two cracks at this one. With recent renewals favouring the lower half of the draw HARROVIAN for Gosden and Dettori looks a solid option drawn 11. He stepped up on his second place return on seasonal debut with a good win at Doncaster winning with a bit to spare and a 6lb penalty should still see him competitive in this.

The other selection in this is CARADOC for Ed Walker who was too far back on his return to the track at Epsom and should be much sharper for the run. That coupled with his previous form puts him right in the mix. Archie Perkins ran well behind Harrovian last time-out and at a huge price could make a good tricast in an extremely competitive race.

Caradoc 6/1 each way

Harrovian 9/1 each way

Newbury 2.50 British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

Tricky race to call with plenty of questions to answer and the most solid option looks like HUBOOR who ran well in defeat in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot. He has dropped a pound for that after finishing 3 and a quarter lengths back in what is a much better race than this. He looked like he got the mile fine that day and should be in the mix again here.

Graceful Magic was a 200/1 shot in the 1,000 Guineas at her only attempt over a mile and even though her pedigree is sketchy on her staying Eve Johnson Houghton clearly thinks she will and as a result may be overlooked at this level. Could emerge as the main danger to the selection.

York 3.05 John Smith’s City Walls Stakes (Listed Race)

Que Amoro was mightily impressive at Ayr last time and has to be respected but she has a 3lb penalty to contend with and looks up against better horses so will need to fight hard if she is to follow up. She is a sprinter on the up and has won three of her last four now so I can see why she’ll have her supporters. I’m keen to oppose though and EL ASTRONAUTE looks worth keeping on side following his gutsy win on return at Doncaster last month. He dug in bravely off the front to make virtually all and was nicely on top at the line. He is likely to tighten up physically and looks a major player here on a track where it may pay to be prominent.

Obviously in a race like this dangers are a plenty. The fav should run well for Michael Dods and Equilateral is another to note as he should enjoy dropping back to 5f after finishing down the field in the July Cup last week behind Oxted.

El Astronaute 4/1

Newbury 3.25 Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race)

Subsequent Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s winner Dame Malliot took this last year so it usually throws up a smart filly and it looks a competitive renewal this year 4/1 bar the field. VIRGIN SNOW impressed me with how she overcame inexperience to make a winning handicap debut at Haydock last month and while she was beaten up to Group company at Newcastle it was another step in the right direction and she looked to bump into an exciting prospect in Nkosikazi. With that further experience under her belt she can come out on top here for Ed Dunlop. She is by Gleneagles out of connections’ multiple Group 1 winner Snow Fairy so there could be lots more to come yet. 4/1 looks very appealing and I can see that being shorter come post time.

I think the market has it spot on and La Lune is the danger. This filly by Champs Elysees caught the eye chasing home Antonia De Vega at Pontefract and almost certainly has more to offer over this trip. Just might be bumping into one on the day! At the bigger prices Shailene had excuses last time and should run into a place if bouncing back.

York 3.40 William Hill Extra Places Every Day Handicap Stakes

13 horses line up for this year’s renewal and it isn’t easy to try and find the winner. I have opted for one at a price this year though in SANDRET at 11/1. He progressed nicely last year winning three times and shaped as though he’d be better for the run when down the field at Ayr following a 217-day absence. He still has scope off a mark of 90 for me and fitter now stepping up in trip again he could get involved at a price. He will be ridden quietly and with plenty of pace on he might just creep quietly into it before coming home strongest of all.

Gold Souk and Where’s Jeff are expected to take eachother on up top so it could pay to side with a late closer like the selection. In terms of a danger I can see Arctic Fox going close for Richard Fahey. She won the Queen Mother’s Cup over C&D off a similar mark and ran well at Ripon last week so will have her supporters.

Newbury 4.00 Hackwood Stakes (Group 3)

I found this a bit of a nightmare to dissect but I’ve ended up coming down on one at a price in DAKOTA GOLD. He was massively progressive last season winning four in a row at one stage and capped off a fine season with Listed success at Ascot. While he hasn’t been at his best in two runs back I think there’s good reason to expect better now and at 9/1 he makes plenty of each way appeal. He was slowly away on reappearance back from a 253 day absence so that run can be forgiven and did too much early at Sandown. That was a very good race though with A’Ali and Liberty Beach fighting out the finish. He should be hitting peak fitness now and in as winnable Group 3 as you’ll see he has to go close.

The Tin Man isn’t the force of old but should give a good account. Repartee made a winning return at Windsor and is going the right way now. Needs more to land a blow here but shouldn’t be underestimated. Judicial did well to win at Newcastle and looks the main danger but the 3lb penalty just swayed it towards Michael Dods 6yo.

Curragh 7.15 Irish Oaks (Group 1)

It was interesting to see a classic in Ireland with A P O’Brien only winning 2 of the last 10 races and they were both at double-figure odds. With the English Derby very much still in my mind and his record in the race I am chancing LABURNUM to improve again. She ran so well in defeat to the re-opposing Even So by a very small margin. That was just her second run and being by Galileo she should improve yet again for this trip and I think the double-figure price on offer is way too big (12/1 at time of writing).

Her stablemates will be competitive as always but Ennistymon (9/4 favourite) has fallen short a few times at this level so it may just be worth siding with an improver. Cayenne Pepper’s run behind Magical rates very well and if suited by the longer trip she will be bang there for Jessie Harrington.
