Doncaster 1.45 vertem.co.uk Doncaster Stakes (Listed Race) 6f
Small field for this renewal with just 6 likely to go to post but there are a few in here that could be better than this level as 3 year olds. ZAMAANI has been holding his form well and ran a cracker in the two-year-old Trophy at Redcar. That races looks like solid form and he seems to go on any ground. He should go close in this competitive affair.
Lipizzaner has been in with some good company and back at this level should go well but Just Frank could be the one who might improve further and fight out the finish in this.
Cheltenham 2.05 Masterson Holdings Hurdle (Class 2) 2m1/2f
A decent race to start the day at Cheltenham with the classy ALLMANKIND starting his season off here. He was last seen finishing third in the Triumph Hurdle at the Festival. Before that he had rattled off 3 easy wins including one over course and distance. He won on seasonal debut by 32 lengths last year and will take all the beating again in this.
One that might prove a danger is Nordano who impressed at Ascot in a handicap and should be close to full fitness after a run on the Flat.
Doncaster 2.20 Vertem Very Different Stockbrokers Handicap (Class 2) 5f
This looks wide-open and WRENTHORPE gets a tentative vote with plenty of these not looking that well handicapped. He’s held his form well all season with 3 placed efforts before winning last time out at Nottingham. He is only 5lb higher for that and should be in the mix if in the same form.
Came From The Dark disappointed last time but if bouncing back to form he will be the main danger.
Cheltenham 2.40 Best Odds At Matchbook Novices’ Chase (Class 2) 2m4f
An intriguing Novice Chase won by Slate House last year. SOUTHFIELD STONE struck three times over hurdles with his most notable scalp coming in the Dovecote at Kempton where he beat Angels Breath. He made a bright start over fences last season placing on his first 3 starts over the larger obstacles before emphatically making the breakthrough at Musselburgh following a short break. He backed that up with a big run when beaten narrowly at Kempton in a Grade 2 and remains open to further improvement. He’s had a wind op and this looks a good starting point.
Pileon is a good looking sort who was chinned in the Martin Pipe at the Festival in March. He is largely unexposed and looks the type to do well over fences. I just think he lacks the experience of the selection though and may end up being better for the run. Not That Fuisse is a strong travelling sort who could also do better so can’t be ruled out.
Doncaster 2.55 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes (Group 1) 1m
This race returns to Doncaster after being run at Newcastle last year. This is where some of the best 2 year-olds end the season and usually go on to Guineas glory next season. The race this year doesn’t look as stacked with class like most years but there are one or two that could go on to much bigger things next year.
I have this between three horse but will be siding with WEMBLEY. He has ran plenty this season and has been the bridesmaid so often with no less the 4 2nd place finishes but it is his last two 2nds that were impressive. Both in Group 1s behind St Mark’s Basilica and Thunder Moon in the Dewhurst and the National Stakes. He is rightly rated the highest in the field and will be tough to beat.
The two dangers One Ruler and State Of Rest have more potential to improve stepping out of much lesser races. One Ruler ran on the same day at Newmarket winning a Group 3 but it was a slower race than the selections and has a bit to find. State Of Rest ran well in the Champagne Stakes but the selection did beat the winner of that easily at Newmarket.
Cheltenham 3.15 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 3m
These Pertemps races are always ultra competitive and this looks no different. Like plenty of these our selection NEVILLE’S CROSS looks to have plenty more to come. He is 2 from 2 to start the season and won his last race by a massive 20 lengths. The time of that race was very good considering he won with so much in the tank. He is up 12lb but I would be very surprised if the handicapper has caught up with him yet and will go close again.
The main danger looks to be Flinck with the step-up to 3 miles looking ideal and should be near full fitness after a very good run at Chepstow on reappearance.
Newbury 3.35 Molson Coors Beverage Company Stakes (Registered As The Horris Hill Stakes) (Group 3) 7f
I know he isn’t much of a price but it’s hard to get away from LANEQASH here. This colt by Cable Bay justified strong support to win on debut at Ascot and then split a couple of subsequent winners in New Mandate and One Ruler when second in the Flying Scotsman at Doncaster last month. He sets a very good standard off the back of that and looks to have obvious claims of making it two wins from his first three starts.
Kingman colt Existent is well bred and won easily at Newmarket 3 weeks ago. Looks sure to improve and is most likely to chase the favourite home. Percy’s Lad is 2-2 and while this is much tougher he might be value to run on into third spot at around 14/1.
Cheltenham 3.50 Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap Chase (Class 2) 3m1f
The Conditional won this last year before going on to win the Ultima at the Festival. I think you want a horse that has had a run rather than one coming here fresh so COBRA DE MAI catches the eye. He had a mixed record last season but did run well when 6th in the contest mentioned and could go well off a mark of 140 here. That run at Fontwell would have blown the cobwebs away and he looks to have been primed for this.
Frodon hasn’t been seen since finishing behind Min in the Ryanair and is entitled to come on for the run. Manofthemountain looks to have a progressive profile but this is a rise in class so he’ll need more again. West Approach isn’t getting any younger but goes well fresh so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was thereabouts under Cobden.
Newbury 4.10 Pravha Stakes (Registered As The St Simon Stakes) (Group 3) 1m4f
One of the tougher races of the day on ITV to finish and a tentative vote goes to last time out winner EUCHEN GLEN. I have to be honest I wrote him off in that race but he really impressed with how he took command and galloped them into submission. He has won two of his last three now and is clearly thriving. He has a 3lb penalty but you’d be foolish to rule out another big effort with conditions to suit.
Raymond Tusk is a former Group 2 winner and he should run his race. Definitely the main danger! Alounak represents last year’s winning connections and has had excuses of late so if bouncing back to his best may also get involved. Tough race to call!
