Sandown 1.50 European Breeders’ Fund Paddy Power ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Final (Grade 3) (GBB) Class 1 2m4f
This is a cracking race and I’ve done something I rarely do and have backed 3 horses against the field. I often take 2 in a race of this nature but given how competitive this is and how much these 3 have stood out I’ve decided to take a punt. My leading hope is PATROCLUS for Nicky Henderson. He looks the stable number 1 with Nico de Boinville booked for the ride and he impressed at Doncaster last time, showing a good attitude to prevail before looking well on top at the finish. He is sure to improve as he gains experience and if this sort of test doesn’t come too soon he is sure to go close and at a decent price.
My second play in the race is SAM BARTON for Emma Lavelle. This horse stayed all day in soft ground to score at Doncaster and strikes me as a horse with real potential. If he builds on that last run he will get involved here. Whether he can defy an opening mark of 132 is another question but there’s a reason the handicapper has taken no chances given his potential. At 14/1 I’m happy to take a chance and I think he’s much better value than the likes of The Mick Preston and Captain Morgs.
I thought I was just going to have those 2 against the field but then I saw BEAUPORT at a huge price. I tweeted saying he was no 25/1 chance and by the time this piece went live he had actually drifted to 33’s so I’ve taken that. He was a big eye-catcher winning at Fontwell and while he was turned over last time he was far from disgraced and I think he’s a horse that might just need a bit more time. If he develops enough mentally he could run a big race here and at a silly price I’m more than willing to include him in my selections. He’s very much a horse for the future but this big field might just help bring out the best in him.
Wolverhampton (AW) 2.05 Bombardier Lady Wulfruna Stakes (Listed Race) (All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifier) Class 1 7f
Quite an open race with half the field having a fair chance of winning this. I am going to take LORD OF THE LODGE each way as I expect him to go close on recent form. His latest run behind Tadleel looks a fair bit of form in handicap company and they clearly think a fair bit of him at home as he ran in a Group 1 at Newmarket and a Group 3 earlier in 2020. He’s had a wind-op and I feel he could make his mark at Listed level.
Highland Dress looks the main danger as he brings in some of the best form however my selection is double the price and more than capable of mixing it with him. Documenting is fav but was behind Highland Dress last time and needs to do more to reverse that form line.
Sandown 2.25 Paddy Power Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m
Another competitive race at Sandown and while Natural History put it altogether to get off the mark at Plumpton last time this is much tougher and a 16lb rise looks harsh to me even though there will be more to come. I much prefer LANGER DAN for the Skelton’s. This horse was a decent juvenile last season and he kept on well from off the pace to finish fourth at Market Rasen last month and he’d be a big player if improving on that now. This test should suit and I think he’s going to go close at 5/1.
One True King continues to hold his form well and Nigel Twiston-Davies often does well in this race. They wouldn’t want to give him too much rope but I doubt he’s going to get a freebee. Others to note include Hang In There and Miranda who has won 2 of her last 3 and is in good form but does have to burden top weight.
Wolverhampton (AW) 2.40 Bombardier British-Hopped Amber Beer Lincoln Trial Handicap Class 2 1m1/2f
Horses aged 4-6 to have dominated this race over the years along with horses carrying 9 stone 2 pounds or less (7 of last 8 winners). TADLEEL fits both trends and is clearly in top form and has a decent chance of a hat-trick. Won his last two by small margins so he hasn’t gone up much, back up to a mile shouldn’t be an issue. This is a slightly better race than he has been winning but he is been improving with every race lately and should be in the mix.
The main dangers look to be Born To Be Alive and previous winner of this race Zwayyan who is down to a fair mark but may not have as much scope as the selection. Mission Boy has Ryan Moore on top and also has to be respected.
Sandown 3.00 British Stallion Studs EBF Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m
Bumpers are always hard to call so a tentative vote goes to BALLYBOUGH MARY for Nigel and Sam Twistor-Davies. This well bred Shirocco mare opened her account under Rules at Hereford and took another step forward when second to Sheila Nash at Kempton last time, beaten just a neck. She is up in grade but looks a lively each way contender. Rainyday Woman has been the one for money chasing a hat-trick but does have a penalty to defy.
At a monster price it wouldn’t surprise me if LEGENDARY GRACE managed to run into a place. She hasn’t achieved much in four runs to date and hasn’t looked the most straightforward running out at Taunton but she does look to be capable of better at some point and just struck me as a bit overpriced here in what looks a weak race all things considered. Could run better than 66/1 suggests.
Wolverhampton (AW) 3.15 Betway Handicap Class 2 6f
This looks a competitive field for this but the ones at the head of the weights looks to have a bit of a class edge. BRIAN THE SNAIL is never far away on the all weather and at 13/2 (at the time of writing) he is a bigger price than I expected. He lost out by just under 2 lengths last time and the time of that race and his previous race look pretty good. He won’t be far again and at the prices you will get a good run for your money.
Repartee could be a big danger after a Listed win at Windsor last season and has a mark of just 101, the downside he has been off for 225 days. Summerghand has some good runs to his name and will still run well off top weight.
