Newmarket 1.00

I’m struggling to look past SOCIAL CONTACT in the opener at Newmarket on Wednesday. This filly by Night Of Thunder looked a work in progress when fourth on debut at Newcastle. She showed enough that day to suggest she could be up to winning next time out. She was nicely settled in midfield and had to be switched right to come with her challenge but just lacked experience and looked a bit clueless when she got into a challenging position. I think she’ll be a lot sharper now and this looks a good opportunity.

Silver Kitten is battle-hardened in comparison but lacks the potential of the selection. She didn’t need to improve to open her account at Yarmouth in July and hasn’t managed to win again since. She is consistent enough but I’ll be surprised if the selection doesn’t improve past her. New Bay filly Trois Vallees is the most interesting of the debutants but she should fare better for the run. Still worth keeping an eye on the market in the run up to the race.

Newmarket 1.30

This is such a difficult race to have a strong view on with only four of these horses having run before and all of the form on show being pretty poor. So with that said it is worth taking a punt on a newcomer and SOUND ANGELA gets the vote. Roger Varian is in such good form lately all his runners deserve a second look. She is in a similar race Friday at Newcastle over 7 furlongs suggesting they quite like this trip for her. In a race with not much known form she looks a solid option.

The main danger could well be New Approach filly Hither who is nicely bred for trainer Ralph Beckett who won this race 2 years ago. Other than the two mentioned it is worth keeping an eye on the market as any money will be significant in this race. Chips And Rice was held up off a slow pace on debut and never got involved but should probably fare better second time up.

Newmarket 2.05

Another race where those with form don’t set a high enough standard to make them of interest so this can go to the well bred newcomer NOBLE ORDER for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. This Dubawi colt is a brother to Severnaya and Royal Fleet. He is also a half-brother to Royal Crusade so certainly has it in his make-up to develop into an exciting horse. Charlie Appleby hasn’t actually won this since 2017 but we know he always has a few he saves for the latter part of the season. As always the market will prove informative.

William Haggas looks to saddle the danger which is also a debutant in My Prospero. This colt by Iffraaj is a half-brother to the classy My Oberon and My Astra and should also have a bright future. The other colt that caught my eye was It Is Now who is by Time Test for Roger Varian. He cost 95,000 guineas and could also be forward enough first-up to go close.

This looks a better standard of maiden than normal. Al Nafir did look the one to beat but he has been taken out this morning. The selection is now LAATANSA for Ed Dunlop. This New Bay colt was just behind Al Nafir the last day and looks to be improving with experience. If he takes another step forward that would put him right in the mix and he gets a tentative vote in an open race.

Plenty of the the others are entitled to improve after just one run including Wholeofthemoon who wouldn’t surprise me if he ran a massive race. New London is the most interesting newcomer so one to keep a close eye on in the market.

I really like the top two in the betting here with EDUCATOR the pick. This colt has improved with every run and did all his best work late on when getting up to win by a neck at Haydock last time. He is bred to relish this step up to a mile and a quarter and I think he’ll be staying on best off what appears to be a lenient opening mark. I expect him to get a good target to aim at in this better quality of race and that is only going to suit him further so I make him a strong play.

Wind Your Neck In is the obvious danger after impressing at Salisbury last month. He was keen enough that day but took it up with a couple of furlongs still to run and stayed on strongly. He is clearly a horse strengthening up all the time and he will take some catching. Single Minded has finished runner-up on 2 of his last 3 runs and can’t be discounted but is going to need more against the top two in here who both look to be improving fast.

I can see Bashkirova being popular for this with her 100% record but other than last years race this has been won by horses rated in their 80s so she may be up against it. MADAME TANTZY gets the vote as she goes for her hat-trick in this race and off a mark of just 80 she must have a serious chance. She thrives over course and distance with a win here last time and a very good second here in April. She is double the price of the favourite at the time of writing and gets a lot of weight which tilts the balance for me.

Bashkirova will still be dangerous but it is whether the weight she has to give the majority of these fillies pays late on. Of the rest State Occastion and Random Harvest also have live chances with the latter likely to be a lot sharper here having finished an encouraging third at Kempton back from a 337-day absence.

Newmarket 4.25

I’ll be hoping by this point Charlie Appleby has at least a couple of winners as that could leave PERSEUS WAY as a very short priced favourite here. This colt by Sea The Stars overcame inexperience to make a winning start at Leicester and a penalty might not be enough to stop him making it a perfect 2-2. Connections won it last year with Hurricane Lane so it can throw up some very nice prospects. He looked uncomplicated on debut so I think Buick will be fairly positive on him.

As has been the story of the day William Haggas could have the danger with Ulysses colt King Of Ice. He is a good looking sort who showed glimpses of promise when midfield on debut over C&D 18 days ago. With usual progression from one start to the next he can get competitive and might be the one to keep the favourite honest. Stablemate to the selection Walk Of Stars might be best of the rest under Adam Kirby.

This looks a poor contest that won’t take much winning and LAWFUL COMMAND looks the one to beat after a good win over Bonita B a week ago at Yarmouth. He should have plenty of scope for improvement at this trip and the 6lb penalty isn’t a worry in this field. Louis Steward is riding him again and they could pair up for back-to-back wins. I’m quite surprised he has opened at 9/2 as that looks good value and I fully expect him to get backed before post time.

Ibn Aldar won on his first try at 7 furlongs and if transferring that all weather form on to turf he is the main danger to the selection. Of the rest Adjudicator has been at his best over 7 furlongs and 12/1 does look a big price in a weak event. Siraju is fairly prominent in the betting but he has ground to make up with the selection.
