1.45 Cheltenham
This race does usually give you a horse to follow for the season in handicaps and there are a few who could improve a lot. Samarrive is favourite for the race after 2 really easy wins from 2 runs but these handicaps usually take more experience to win. He is likely plenty good enough but I would rather something at a bigger price with handicap experience. SAMBA DANCER is improving with every run with his last two victories looking comfortable. He is only up 6lb for his easy win at Stratford and claimer Liam Harrison takes of 3lb so he is likely to go very well again off 114.
Samarrive is the danger to all of them as he could be anything and will likely be running in Graded races this season but gives plenty of weight and experience away and will need to be as good as they think he is to win this. Of the rest Byzantine Empire should go well again if in the same form as when last seen back in July.
2.00 Newbury
Three horses come here after making a winning debut so that gives you an idea of the strength in depth to this years Horris Hill but I’m going to side with NOBLE TRUTH for Charlie Appleby. This Kingman colt showed a good attitude to prevail in a Listed race at Doncaster last month and too his form up another notch when a close second to the progressive Angel Bleu in a Group 1 in France last time. He sets the standard on that and with more to come I think he’ll prove too strong for these albeit some decent potential in the field.
Light Infantry was one of the three mentioned who made a winning start and with cut in the ground ideal he could run a big race. Dubai Poet was only third to Coroebus at Newmarket but should also come on for that run so has to enter calculations in terms of a place. Of those at bigger prices Tacarib Bay did it nicely on debut at Haydock and could also be one to follow going forward.
2.20 Cheltenham
This handicap has been won by plenty of top horses over the years and whilst there likely isn’t anything as good as Frodon in here it is still a very good renewal. STORM CONTROL looks a worthy favourite back down to a mark of 137 which he won off at the track in December. He has been running off marks in the 140s on his last few runs which wasn’t easy but he will go really well back down to this mark. His trainer Kerry Lee has won with both of her runners so far in October so she is clearly in good form which bodes well.
Jersey Bean is the main danger as he goes well fresh and won nicely at the track in April and only has to carry 4lb more here so it is hard to see him not challenging. Cloth Cap is off a very high mark compared to last year but after a wind-op you can’t rule him out and it would be an emotional victory were he to prove good enough with his owner Trevor Hemmings sadly passing away earlier this month.
2.35 Newbury
This will demand more stepping out of handicaps into Group company but SISKANY is firmly on the upgrade judging by that Newmarket win and with more to come he gets a confident vote to come out on top again. He stayed on strongly the last day and is unexposed especially over this trip. Wells Farhh Go and Extra Elusive are likely to take each other on early so he should get a good position under James Doyle tucked in off the pace.
Ilaraab has struggled a bit lately so has enough to prove. Max Vega is the danger having caught the eye in the Ebor and then finding a gruelling 2 miles a bit too much last time. Back down in trip he should give the selection something to think about.
2.55 Cheltenham
It is a shame only four are set to line up for this but it does look a good race with TRITONIC getting the vote. He burst onto the scene at Kempton with an impressive 10 lengths victory which put him right at the top of the market for the Triumph where he eventually finished fifth in a good renewal. If he is the same form as his Kempton run I don’t think any of these will beat him even with the weight he gives them.
Dan Skelton’s Stepney Causeway is the main danger as he has won his last two races with ease but they were easier contests. He could really be anything but Tritonic gets the vote as we know what level he can run to. I Like To Move It can’t be ruled out with his classy bumper form and a good win on hurdles two weeks ago. He has fitness on his side as well.
3.15 Doncaster
The unbeaten Luxembourg has been the talking horse for this and it is hard to doubt him given how impressive he was at the Curragh last month. He is clearly very promising but ROYAL PATRONAGE continues to be underestimated and it wouldn’t exactly be a ‘shock’ if he managed to win this given his recent form. He is on a four-timer after lowering the colours of Coroebus in the Royal Lodge. That horse has won since and looks an exciting individual so the form is rock solid. If he handles softer conditions the market has overlooked him again and I think he is worth chancing.
Bayside Boy is a tough colt who was a very good third to Native Trail at Newmarket. His form is right up there so I don’t expect him to be far away either. Given the strength in depth here you’d have to say this favourite is too short in the betting and looks opposable.
3.30 Cheltenham
Small field for this competitive handicap with just the 9 taking up their entries. Classy sorts have won the last couple of renewals and SKY PIRATE could follow suit off top weight. He is a multiple course and distance winner and was last seen taking the Grand Annual at the Festival. He will likely be campaigned at the Festival again and this looks a good starting point and he should go close if running to his Graded form.
Before Midnight and Leapaway look the dangers as they are getting plenty of weight and have plenty of solid runs to their names. Leapaway has fitness on side so could be the best of the two at this stage of the season.
3.50 Doncaster
Flaming Rib has won his last three and has to be respected but I prefer the potential of DEODAR here. Ralph Beckett is going along really well with his 2yos and he looks to have another promising one here in this son of Bated Breath. He overcame clear signs of inexperience to make a winning start at Newbury and is only going to improve from that. This is undoubtedly tougher but he looks pretty smart to me and I’m hopeful he can make it 2-2 and remain unbeaten.
Flaming Rib would have to be the danger on recent form and given conditions but Gold Medal also made a bright start winning on debut at Wolverhampton and if they go to hard that could play into his hands. Mohi is on a hat-trick but he will need to find more to beat these as it looks a good race.
4.05 Cheltenham
As we saw with at the Festival the Irish form seems a level above the UK form and TULLYBEG for Gordon Elliott has a good chance of demonstrating that again. He is going for a hat-trick after two half-length wins in Ireland but looked good for a fair bit more in both runs so the extra weight here won’t be an issue and he looks the one to beat.
It isn’t a deep race so Haul Away who like the selection is also on a hat-trick will be the main danger. He will make a good go of it from the front and has to be considered despite the 5lb rise in hurdle mark.
4.20 Doncaster
Toughest race of the day on Saturday but hopefully we can go out with a winner. I’ve taken two against the field with BOUNDLESS POWER my main play in the race. This son of Slade Power has done well since switching hands to Mick Appleby winning twice at Nottingham in the summer. He was back to his best at Ascot in deep ground last time and a 4lb rise looks lenient. If in the same form he will go close and he does have a fair bit of pace around him to give him a good toe into the race.
Given the nature of this race I’ve also chanced MAKANAH who has won over this C&D before. He was back to form in easier company when third at Musselburgh and if he can build on that here he might go close at a double-figure price. Dangers include Illusionist who should relish conditions and the loveable Dakota Gold who doesn’t really know how to run a bad race.
