Triple Tap is likely to be popular here for Bob Baffert after making a winning debut at Santa Anita but we haven’t seen him since and I think he’s going to need to improve a fair bit to win this and remain unbeaten. I’m keen to oppose and I’ve taken two against the field. My first play is the hat-trick seeking SILVER MOON ROAD who showed a good attitude off the bridle to score last time and has fitness (and experience) on side against most of these.

I’ve also included NOTRE DAME who finished just half a length back in third behind the selection last time and would be dangerous if getting on the speed. Triple Tap is obviously a danger but don’t ignore Sumo either who is also going the right way after a convincing win last time.

Del Mar 7.25

This doesn’t look like a deep renewal of the Qatar Golden Mile and I have it between READY TO PURRFORM and Degree Of Risk. Preference is for the former who looks to have more scope for improvement. So much so that they have him entered in the Juvenile Turf which is a top class race. He is a reserve for that so likely to run here and has a great chance of extending his 100% record for Brad Cox. The harder they go the better as he made up a ton of ground to win last time and has gears.

Degree Of Risk is the danger after running a solid third in a Grade 1 at Woodbine so you would expect him to go very well but I think the selection might just improve past him. Of the rest Thirty Four Coupe is quite a big price and might be a bit of value to hold on in the closing stages for a place.

Del Mar 7.55

I think if you put a line through that last run from AT THE SPA then she is a good play here. She was just never on a going day having got fractious in the gate and failed to give her running. This is easier and given time since I think she can resume her progression as she had looked promising prior to that. She beat Drizella and Madiha over a sharper trip that ideal so can confirm that form tonight. She should relish this 7f and I think she should be favourite in all honesty.

Another filly that needs to bounce back but is too big a price to leave out is IT’S SIMPLE for Doug O’Neill. She has first-time blinkers here and she might just get them going off the front end. Big Novel did all his best work late when winning over 6f last time and looks the danger with more improvement to come up a furlong in trip.

Del Mar 8.30

This looks wide open with all of these fairly evenly matched on form and figures. ANGELCENTS won 5 in a row including at the track. She was bumped at the start on her last run and didn’t get to the front as easily. She was only beaten just over a length. She should get away cleanly from stall 3 here and go very well in a competitive race at a decent each way price. Her record on turf reads really well with 5 wins from 7 starts so I think you’d be foolish to leave her out.

Superstition looks the main danger after running a decent race in a Grade 3 last time and she has a great winning record over 5 furlongs. Others to note include Hear My Prayer for Vladimir Cerin. She has won 2 of her last 3 and did it nicely last time finishing best. Fitter now so more in the locker and should run a big race.

Del Mar 9.05

I really like one in here at a price and that’s BILLY’S BET for Alexis Barba and Geovanni Franco. He made a bright start winning on debut over 5f at Santa Anita last month and with scope to improve now heading on dirt and going up in trip he could easily surprise a few here. He will go forward and if he gets a good trip and lasts out the 7f then I don’t see how he won’t go close. He was always holding on when winning on debut and looks to have the right attitude for the job.

Slow Down Andy and Joker Boy are vying for favouritism at the time of writing but the latter suffered a heavy defeat last time albeit at the top level and the former didn’t achieve any more than the selection winning on debut and is a much shorter price. Finneus has experience on side and should find this easier so also has to enter calculations.

Del Mar 9.50

Just the fourth running of this race and it looks a cracker with plenty of British and Irish horses coming over. AVERLY JANE is one of Wesley Ward’s three runners in this race and I think she still has plenty more to come after winning all 4 of her starts with ease. This is the best race she has run in but if getting to the front from 8 she will take some pegging back even with all the pace that is in here. She beat stablemate Kaufymaker (reopposes again) easily last time and looks one to keep firmly on side.

Armor could be the one that pounces if this likely frantic pace collapses if he can get a good position from stall 7. Of the rest I would give Twilight Jet an each way chance if not getting boxed in from stall 1 as she did impress in France when last seen and has potential to do better after just a handful of starts.

Del Mar 10.30

Unbeaten filly ECHO ZULU has to be my best best at the Breeders’ Cup on Friday. She was mightily impressive in the Frizette at Belmont last time powering clear to win by over 7 lengths. She looks a potential superstar in the making off the back of that and she can make it four straight tonight. There are some good fillies in here but I think she is a horse we will be hearing a lot more about in the future and however I break this down I can’t see her beaten. She made it look so effortless the last day and scarily is open to further improvement.

Juju’s Map herself has looked exciting winning both starts since her debut and was nicely on top in a Grade 1 at Keeneland last time. If she builds on that again she should give the selection something to think about but might always be playing second fiddle. Hidden Connection is a perfect 2-2 and motored clear last time but she is meeting a different level of opposition here so will need to improve again to figure.

It shows how open this race is when it is 8/1 the field so PIZZA BIANCA is the bet for us at a nice each way price. She stepped up big time to finish second in a Grade 1 at Woodbine last time and if stepping forward again she will go close in this even with the depth in the field. She has a progressive look to her form and I’m surprised she is as big as she is in the market – expecting those odds to come in by post time.

TURNERLOOSE is the other bet for us in the race as she was a length away from being 3 from 3 and her trainer Brad Cox thinks she will be better on the forecast surface at Del Mar. She is a big price if that is the case and I’ll be backing her to place as well as having an each way saver as I’m that confident of a big run.

Del Mar 11.50

It’s such a shame we’ve lost Jack Christopher here but he has been scratched after suffering a setback. This now looks a great chance for the unbeaten CORNICHE to bring up the hat-trick. I thought he was a big danger anyway but the wide draw just put me off. With Jack Christopher out this just got a bit easier and I think he’ll take a lot of beating. He showed good early speed to get on the lead last time and kicked clear towards the line. He is obviously open to improvement after just 2 starts and he looks to have a really promising future.

Pinehurst is also 2-2 and I think he is the most obvious danger to the favourite. He won despite showing signs of inexperience on debut and then followed up impressively last time. He can step forward again up in trip and I think he will finish second. Commandperformance chase home Jack Christopher at Belmont and will be closing up late but the leader and hopefully winner may have already flown.

Charlie Appleby looks likely to have a strong say in this race with MODERN GAMES and Albahr. The former is the pick of William Buick and Appleby has said he just about has the edge between the two. He has won 3 of his last 4 with the latest an easy win in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket. He may be even better over a mile and if he is will be the one to beat in a good renewal.

Albahr won a win and you are in race at Woodbine last time and Appleby says he will have the experience if it gets a bit rough. He will run well but I think Dubawi Legend will be the main danger if he can get a good position from stall 14. His latest run behind Native Trail would see him go close in this.
