Southwell 12.25
Percussion shaped with promise when second over C&D on chase debut but he is short enough here given how competitive it is and I think he might be worth taking on. CAWTHORNE LAD took a big step forward tackling fences for the first time when winning easily at Stratford last month. He was sent off 25/1 for that but ended up winning by 7 and a half lengths so there didn’t look any fluke about it. He’ll need to jump better here up 9lb but there’s a good chance he goes and follows up.
The danger may well be Bardd as he can travel well into races and that was the case when second at Warwick. He doesn’t always go through with it though (like last time) and that makes him vulnerable but the ability is clearly there. Generous Day has to be considered on a going day but he is an 9 year old now and didn’t exactly show much at Kempton last time.
Southwell 12.55
This doesn’t look a deep race with just 5 going to post and UNE DE LA SENIERE is the one that appeals most on chase debut. She has some good form over 3 miles and on her best hurdles form she would be able to mix it with any of these. She could even improve for going over fences and I expect her to go well here. She’ll stay 3 miles well and looks to have plenty going for her including her price as I’d have her favourite over Alpha Carinae.
The latter is the slight favourite at the time of writing and is relatively unexposed over this trip and in handicaps in general so will be a threat to all of these but did run below par on return at Kempton last time so will need to be a lot sharper than that to beat the selection.
Southwell 1.25
This is one of the most competitive races of the day but I do like the chances of ACROSS THE LINE for Dan and Harry Skelton. He looked to need the experience and the outing when only fifth on chase debut at Worcester but stepped forward to finish second last time. He’s on a good mark and I’ll be surprised if he isn’t involved in the finish here. The yard remain in great form and on the balance 7/2 looks too big.
Light N Strike is probably the most solid play after winning at Plumpton but an 8lb rise is a bit harsh and this demands more if one or two others step forward. Heartbreak Kid ran better when third at Sedgefield but needs more again. Isolate beat Light N Strike before flopping last time so a bounce back is called for now.
Southwell 1.55
Another ridiculously hard race to call with very little form to go on. I am going to have a small bet on SUPREME GIFT who won his point to point in Ireland when last seen and it is interesting that Jamie Codd rode him. Like many of the field he could be anything but he is a bigger price than I expected so looks the each way play but I have to reiterate how tough this is to call.
Bridal Knot for Nicky Henderson is pretty short for this so must be fancied but I can’t have it at the prices. Carrigdoun Boy could be the danger as he like the selection won his last run in PTPs and there has been a little bit of money for it at the time of writing.
Southwell 2.30
This looks a good chance for NOTEBOOK to open his account over hurdles for Harry Whittington. He was well held at Fontwell but the winner Datsalrightgino looks a nice prospect and that form is the best on offer here. Daryl Jacob takes over in the saddle which is a big plus and the step back in trip will also help him for now as he certainly doesn’t lack speed. I think he’ll go forward again and he might not come back to them this time.
Here We Have It folded quite tamely on return but should strip fitter from that and is also back down in trip which can help. Phoenix Aquilus isn’t exactly bred to be a hurdler being by Slade Power but didn’t run too badly over hurdles last season and might not be all that far away either. Whenthepennydrops has shown ability but probably needs more time and experience to show what he is capable of.
Southwell 3.00
This maiden has a couple of decent looking horses heading up the market with LYDFORD looking like the one to beat. He went close on hurdles debut at Leicester 2 weeks ago and should improve a bundle for that experience. He was good on the Flat and if fulfilling his potential over hurdles he is likely to win this albeit at a short enough price.
The danger is Midnight Centurion who has been second on all of his starts in the national hunt sphere and may just always find one too good. His runs have been to a good level so the selection will have to be as good as I think he is to beat him.
Southwell 3.30
I screamed home BLACK LIGHTNING at 16/1 at Fontwell last month and I thought he showed a cracking attitude to get up. He prevailed by just a short head at the line so has only gone up 2lb as a result. He can be quite tricky but he found plenty off the bridle the last day so may well have turned a corner. This is tougher which is why he is quite a big price again but it wouldn’t surprise me if he went close as Tabitha Worsley clearly gets on well with him having rode him to all three career victories.
Thundersockssundae and Killane have been the two for money and it’s the latter I fear most. He improved to win at Ayr last month and while that wasn’t much of a race he did it well and a 4lb rise looks perfectly fair. Midnight Callisto still has potential so also has to enter calculations.
