Punchestown 11.45

A good race to kick off a decent card at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve. Granted a clear round I think EGALITY MANS can get back on track here. Mullins is flying right now and he has won this before with the likes of Pleasant Company and Childrens List. This 7yo made a promising start over hurdles before taking a tumble at Fairyhouse. He should take to fences and if he does he can make a winning start.

Cobbler’s Way has some strong form in the book over hurdles and should also have a bright future in this sphere but we haven’t seen him since pulling up behind Monkfish at the Cheltenham Festival so he does have a bit to prove. Everglow has experience on side and might emerge as a greater threat.

This looks like a race JP McManus has a ridiculously strong hand in and I am going to have bets on two of his runners here. ENVOL PIERJI is a bigger price than I expected based on the softer conditions he will get on Friday. He runs well when it comes up soft as he did on his run at Down Royal last time finishing a close third. He will be fitter for that run and should go well with Mark Walsh onboard.

GOODNIGHTGODBLESS is a soldi each way bet off a mark of 109 with his previous form looking pretty solid in handicap company. JP McManus also has the favourite Pairc Na Ngael who won nicely at Thurles last time out but is up 9lb for that run. He is a likely danger but I think he may be better on good ground.

Two potentially nice types lining up here in Vauban for Mullins and PIED PIPER for Elliott. The latter shades the verdict having been in winning form when last seen on the Flat at Leicester for John Gosden. He was sold for 225,000 guineas and looks a really intriguing hurdling newcomer. The testing conditions should be right up his street and he might just handle the going better on the day.

Vauban was progressive himself on the Flat in France winning 2 of his 4 starts and he should also have a really promising future. I expect the pair to battle this one out but Wild Dollar also deserves a second look now sent hurdling in the McManus silks.

Willie Mullins usually drops his horses in grade to take this race as he has done in the last 4 runnings. CILAOS EMERY was regularly seen in Grade 1s last season and based on his last run at Thurles he should be winning this. He beat Darver Star when heavily odds-on last month and he should come on a fair bit for that. He should take this race before going back up in Grade to bigger and better things.

Saint Felicien is 2 wins from 2 hurdles starts so could really be anything but will need to improve to challenge the proven selection. Off You Go could enter calculations if bouncing back to similar form to last season and looks a monster price so might be worth backing for a place.

Monster field head to post for this! It did throw up a 25/1 upset back in 2017 but for the last two years the market has proved more a less spot on. I like CAPTAIN CONBY off the back of that win here last month. He brushed aside 20 rivals on hurdles debut and did it impressively getting on top close home. He was sent off 66/1 in the betting but there didn’t seem any fluke about it. This is tougher but he can improve and I like his chances against these especially at this track again.

Bread And Butter is fav at the time of writing and has run two very solid races since joining this yard. He has a 7lb claimer booked and has plenty going for him. Festival D’Ex is lightly raced and may well have been primed for this so also deserves close attention especially if the market speaks favourably.

Punchestown 2.30

Interesting race with the favourite currently first reserve but I do think BRANDY HARBOUR will get in and make a bold bid here. He has already won at Naas this month before going close at Limerick just 5 days ago. He is back over hurdles where he could be ridiculously well handicapped based on his chase mark and if running he is surely the one to beat. His odds are likely to tumble when he gets in so worth taking the early price at 3/1!

Fair Minded will be a danger on softer ground and would be my idea of the winner if the selection doesn’t run. Other than Brosna Rocco who is in good form it doesn’t look a deep race and you would hope the favourite takes his chance if getting a run.

Brandy Harbour 3/1

Punchestown 3.00

This looks a great chance for HARMONYA MAKER to go one better for Gordon Elliott. She shaped with a great deal of promise on debut when second at Navan and with usual improvement is going to take a lot of beating here. The filly that beat her The Model Kingdom is 2-2 and looks nice prospect so I rate the form. There isn’t much pace on so I think Jamie Codd will send her forward and I’m not sure there’s anything good enough in here to peg her back.

Carrigmoorna Queen is an intriguing newcomer who cost €18,000 and she might be the one to put up the most resistance but obviously lacks experience. Clairmc ran well at Fairyhouse and should be best of the rest if building on that. Latest Model is well related but I’d like to see some money for her before I could have any sort of an each way saver on her.
