Newmarket 1.15
This is a race that Roger Varian has done well in over the years and AMEYNAH looks to have a good chance of extending his good record in the race. She finished second over course and distance in October and was very keen that day. She should have improved plenty since that run and will go close here.
Of the other runners the main dangers are most likely the newcomers with Enshrine looking a good prospect on paper along with Shining Al Danah. Hopefully the selection can make her experience tell.
Cheltenham 1.30
A fairly open race to kick off the card at Cheltenham with plenty in with chances. BOLD PLAN looks weighted fairly enough to land his hat-trick after wins at Market Rasen and Newbury. He hasn’t won by big margins and as a result only carries 2lb more here. He has imrpoved the last two runs and if he does it again he will go very well.
Sizable Sam is the danger after three good runs in and around his current mark and will go well again off a mark of 130. Whatsupwithyou is also likely to feature prominently in a competitive event.
With 5 wins from his last 6 starts now the progressive POCKET THE PROFIT can strike again while the iron is hot. He won head in chest on return at Pontefract and turned out quickly under a penalty should take plenty of stopping under Ryan Moore.
Aclaim colt Object looks the danger to me on his return. He won fresh last season and capped off the year with another win at Kempton. He is open to further progression and should run a nice race, hopefully behind the favourite. Loves Me Likearock also remains unexposed and could go well but an opening mark of 87 does look a bit harsh. Dig Two makes his handicap debut and is another one to consider from a place perspective for Hugo Palmer.
Cheltenham 2.05
This race gave me a bit of a headache and I have come to the conclusion any of these lining up could win. After much deliberation a tentative vote does go to SIMPLY THE BETTS for Paul Nicholls. This horse went close over C&D on New Year’s Day and if he bounces back to that sort of form then he will definitely have a chance of landing the spoils. There is a lot of pace on so he should be in the box seat.
Coole Cody always has to be respected around here but he is off a career-high mark now up 7lb from that Festival win. He still has to be respected though and I very nearly sided with him. Stolen Silver has been the one for money and he is 8lb better off with the latter so also has to enter calculations. Manofthemountain is another one you cannot rule out.
Newmarket 2.25
Not an easy race to call with none of these having raced previously but it is usually a race Godolphin target for their newcomers with plenty of success in the past. SECRET STATE looks their first string and I would expect him to go well for an in-form Charlie Appleby.
Stablemate State Event will be a lively danger along with Francesco Clemente. Archie Watson always has his horses ready early in the season so Noble Anthem could be overpriced.
Newmarket 3.00
Ebro River is the only Group 1 winner in the field but he ran poorly in France when last seen and might just need this first run back. If he does underperform then JUMBY looks great value to me at 5/1. This New Bay colt likes this track with 2 of his 4 career wins coming here and he impressed to follow up his Salisbury win over 7f here at the end of last season. He was given a confident ride on that occasion and came through strongly to pick them up. He drops back a furlong on his reappearance but is proven over C&D and if he gets a good target to aim at he should be finishing best under William Buick.
I’m expecting him to have improved from 3 to 4 and with the likes of Last Crusader, Double Or Bubble, Bellosa and even Ebro River going forward this could set up perfectly. It wouldn’t surprise me if Garrus emerged as the main danger as if he gets it run to suit he is clearly very capable too.
Newmarket 3.35
Charlie Appleby has won this race with some superstars lately and NATIVE TRAIL looks like another potential star. He won all 4 starts last season including the Dewhurst at the track in October. He has already won 2 Group 1s and this is his to lose unless any of the others have improved dramatically.
Star Of India is most likely the biggest danger on all known form. He should be better going up in trip and it will be interesting to see if there is money for him in the betting.
