Musselburgh 1.32
Plenty in with chances in ITV’s opener on Saturday so not a race to go overboard in that’s for sure. I do like BAIKAL but it’s frustrating to see him at the top of the market. This son of No Nay Never ran a cracker on handicap debut going down just a neck to Oh Herberts Reign at Doncaster and given he is likely to have progressed from 2 to 3 and is just 3lb higher everything points towards a big run.
In terms of a danger Value Theory looks like she could go well off an opening mark of 96. The yard are in good form and she was highly tried last year. Cable Bay colt Bullet Force has been the one for money but he does have a bit to prove. This better ground should suit at least.
Newbury 1.50
This years Surprise Stakes looks wide open with plenty of class on show. I think it is worth taking on those at the top of the market with RAYMOND TUSK who will be fully fit for this race after a nice warm up win at Doncaster last month. He won that easily and is entitled to take his chance at this level. Alan King seems to have his horses in good order and I expect Raymond Tusk to go close here.
Ilaraab and Thunderous both have the form in the book to win this and will be dangerous but have needed the run in the past so the selection looks good value at double their prices at the time of writing.
Another tricky handicap to solve and a narrow vote goes to GOBI SUNSET for Mark Johnston. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen from Jonny Peate and he looks good value for his 7lb claim. This son of Oasis Dream hasn’t won since this time last year but his recent form is hard to fault. He went down just a neck at Lingfield last time and if he builds on the he will be seriously competitive here.
Gioia Cieca has been backed and he has won over C&D so I think he has to be respected. I wouldn’t want to be backing anything too short in here though. Another Batt would be my idea of the main danger as he will come on plenty for his reappearance run and knows how to win.
Newbury 2.25
I am not sure there is anything in here as good as last years winner Alcohol Free but it looks set to be a competitive affair still. I quite like JUMBLY here after she won 3 of her 4 starts as a 2 year old including a Listed race over course and distance. She won that race really well and has likely improved again over the winter and I would be disappointed if she didn’t get very close here.
The favourite at the time of writing is Wild Beauty for the Appleby yard that are flying currently. She ran really well in two Group 1s at the end of the season and will be a danger to all in the field. I just feel she may be at her best over a mile.
Musselburgh 2.39
Mick Appleby worked wonders with RAASEL last season and he had no problem bringing up the five-timer at Nottingham in November, running on strongly to win with a bit in hand at the line. That form worked out notably well and back here 8lb higher he may well make a winning return. He won fresh last season so that won’t be an issue and he remains open to further improvement. This is competitive but at the same time has a fair few exposed sorts in here so it might be a good opportunity.
Makanah has won over track and trip and he is a very talented sprinter but he can be hard to catch right and he might end up doing better for the run. Zarzyni is another one that has proved a tricky ride in recent times but he might run well in first-time cheekpieces so he is also noted.
Newbury 3.00
Only the 6 runners lining up for the Greenham and I am keen to take on Angel Bleu on ground that I think is faster than ideal for him. I am looking forward to PERFECT POWER stepping up in trip. He finished the season winning the Morny and Middle Park Stakes over 6 furlongs. He only gets going late and should see out the 7 furlongs here at Newbury. Richard Fahey seems to be hitting form over the last few days and his horse should go close here.
Angel Bleu is still a danger with good form in the book at this trip but has to prove himself on the ground. Flaming Rib is interesting as he has 4 of the top 7 speed figures to his name and if seeing out this trip could surprise a few on his first run for Hugo Palmer (might be worth backing in the each way extra markets on bet365 as a saver).
Musselburgh 3.14
Mark Johnston has won the last two renewals of this race with Austrian School and Themaxwecan and he looks to have a good chance of landing the hat-trick not with the latter but with STATE OF BLISS who Joe Fanning rides. This son of Gleneagles certainly wasn’t disgraced when fifth on return at Thirsk and that run would have left him spot on for this now. He is only 2lb above his last winning mark and he is exactly the type of horse the trainer does well with.
Last year’s winner Themaxwecan has to be respected as he is back down to last year’s winning mark but he does have a bit to prove which is why. Zero Ten represents Emmet Mullins and the bookies have taken no chances with Benoit D L Sayette booked for the rides – a very handy 7lb claimer. Enemy will stay strongly and also has to be feared for Ian Williams.
Newbury 3.35
A few of these look handicapped to land this with SALEYMM the standout for me. He returned after a wind op to finish second in the Lincoln behind Johan. He has only been raised 1lb for that and should strip a lot fitter here. He is a horse I think is better than a mark of 98 and wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Group races later in the season.
Rogue Bear finished third in the same race the selection made his comeback in and likely would have been closer if drawn nearer the front pair. He will go well again and rates the main danger. Modern News is also worthy of a second look.
