Newbury 1.50

Real World won this last year so it can be won by a nice horse and I think CADILLAC fits the bill now with Kevin Philippart De Foy. This Lope De Vega colt sets a pretty high standard having won a Listed race convincingly at Leopardstown last month for Jessica Harrington. He then bumped into Dubai Future in the Wolferton at Royal Ascot. He has to give 3lb here but I can see him giving weight and a beating under Jack Mitchell.

Despite market confidence behind Grocer Jack I think Finest Sound is the danger. He completely blew out at Epsom but that can be forgiven and his run in Dubai before that was very good. If he is at his best he will give the favourite a race at least.

Market Rasen 2.06

A really open handicap here with plenty likely to improve at this trip including APACHE CREEK. He has had two tries in and around 3 miles winning his last run and ran a stinker on soft ground. On good ground he seems a different horse and will go well off a 4lb rise with Jonjo O’Neill Junior in the saddle.

There are plenty of dangers with Ask Paddington looking the most interesting one if he stays the trip as it is clear he is in top form. Of the rest Galileo Silver will go but may have a bit less scope for improvement.

Newbury 2.21

Going Gone looked as though he didn’t really stay at Newmarket so connections would have been delighted with that run at Royal Ascot last month. He could have more to offer so is respected but at 7/2 he is way too short in here as this is competitive. I like AURIFEROUS at a decent each way price. This son of Golden Horn hasn’t been beaten far the last twice and given this is easier than the Northumberland Plate last time it would be no surprise to see him rattle a few cages here.

Of the rest Rock Eagle has been too free the last twice so if settling better may well end up showing up better here. His form with Ranch Hand back in March and April is pretty solid. Diamond Bay is also feared.

Market Rasen 2.41

There are plenty in this field with live chances with the selection CIRQUE ROYAL on a hat-trick. He has won his last two really well and a mark of 123 seems fair on handicap debut. He has plenty of experience from runs in maidens and novice races and will run a big race here. Even at the time of writing he is being heavily supported so he could turn out to be one of the gambles on the card.

At a bigger price HURRICANE ALI is worth a saver after running with credit on his bid for a hat-trick last time and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has another win in him. Galata Bridge is the main danger after winning a handicap at Huntingdon with ease but I opposed him due to the big rise in the weights but he could still be anything.

Newbury 2.56

This is open but in some regards I do think the market has it right. Happy Romance has to be hugely respected looking to defend her crown. This does look a strong renewal though and she failed to fire to some extent when down the field in the July Cup last time. I’m going to chance ROHAAN following up that impressive Royal Ascot win. He looked a horse thriving given the way he picked his way through late and if they go hard he may well be finishing best again.

Man Of Promise never threatened in the King’s Stand but back at 6f he has to be respected in here. I still think Great Ambassador is a horse to note as well but he is quickly becoming a bit of a ‘cliff horse’. Might be worth a small cover bet at big odds though.

Market Rasen 3.14

A highly competitive renewal as you would expect for a Grade 3 handicap and I am going to have two in here as I quite like the favourite MORTLACH but will have a saver in a race of this nature. I am sure he will be popular on the day after winning his last 4 and based on his last run he doesn’t look like the handicapper will catch up with him giving him just 6lb more here. He should win again unless there is something lurking that is really well handicapped.

I had to include STATUARIO as I think he is handicapped to go close after a good run behind Mahler’s Promise last time. He is better off at the weights and can reverse that form with a mistake free round. Peter Bowen has a cracking record in this race (also runs Francky Du Berlais) but I just thought this one was overpriced. The main danger could well be La Domaniale who has improved on all 3 starts this season with 2 wins and a third and will go close here if improving again.

Newbury 3.30

I’m looking forward to seeing David O’Meara’s MARIA BRANWELL out again at Newbury on Saturday afternoon. This filly made a winning debut at Thirsk back in May and then followed up in the National Stakes at Sandown. She beat Crispy Cat on that occasion and the form has worked out well enough since. She likely improved again to finish third in the Queen Mary behind Dramatised and with more to come she should get back on track here. This is likely to be run at a fierce gallop and I can only see that playing to her strengths.

Rogue Spirit is quite hard to weigh up given he was entitled to win as he did last time. He likely has more to come so may well emerge as the biggest danger. Eddie’s Boy is quite a likeable type and he might fare best of the rest at a bigger price and might be worth a saver to hit the frame.

Curragh 3.45

The NAP won again yesterday as Operating drifted from 11/8 out to 9/4 before winning on the bridle at Nottingham. That was my fourth winner on the trot so hopefully I can make it a FIVE-TIMER on Saturday! I really like the chances of MAGICAL LAGOON for Jessica Harrington. This filly was improving with experience before enjoying the step up in trip to win the Ribblesdale last month. The second Sea Silk Road had previously looked promising winning at Nottingham and Goodwood so the form looks solid.

With Emily Upjohn out of this race due to travel complications it looks a great chance for this daughter of Galileo to make her mark at Group 1 level. History is likely to chase her home.
