Race 4 Ballarat 5.00 Spylark (best price 10/11)
Promising type who clearly needed the experience on debut but stepped forward to finish a good third at Bendigo, running on strongly; more to come yet and she is of strong interest in a race as weak as this.
This race is cutting up badly so SPYLARK might not be much of a price come post time but it’s a poor days racing Down Under so I’m still putting her forward as my strongest selection. She ran on well last time and with that under her belt and the penny seemingly dropping she should take all the beating here. Granny’s Reward is 0/8 and has spurned a few good opportunities already. Celtic Glory has an even worse record though with 0/17 and needs more on what we’ve seen recently to be a serious player in here. Bar those it is 12/1 the field with Ahtohallan running a stinker at Bendigo last time. Buddie Rippa makes his debut but there has been no money for him and the betting should prove informative.

Race 5 Penola 6.35 Hi Smokey (best price 6/4)
Likeable type who improved to win at Naracoorte last month, well on top to score by 4 lengths at the line; that form stacks up and with the potential of better yet he looks to have found a good opportunity.
Difficult to look past last time out winner HI SMOKEY at Penola on Sunday. He won easily at Naracoorte last time and if in the same form here should be capable of following up. Thanasi won at Horsham and Casterton but blew out at Hamilton and that would have to be a worry. Gypsy Crown might pose a greater threat as she has won twice over this trip and could have this run to suit. Destiny’s Republic was won three times too but hasn’t been showing a great deal recently and needs a return to form to have a significant say in the outcome. Melissa Kate is more exposed than those mentioned above but did at least run well when third at Mount Gambier last month.
