Fontwell 12.30 Maclaine (best price 15/8)
Good looking sort who went close on debut in a bumper at Newbury; pitched into a good race on hurdles debut behind subsequent winners and far from disgraced on final start; sets the standard and has more to come.
No surprise to see MACLAINE top the market for this. He finished fifth behind Pull Again Green on debut over hurdles and had the likes of Wonderwall, Shearer and Dom Of Mary in front. That is strong form and his third to Walking On Air at Newbury when last seen wasn’t bad either. He is open to improvement on return and already sets the standard so should prove a tough nut to crack. Pedley Wood is a son of Westerner and is well related so looks the danger on Rules debut but should come on for the outing. Gold In Doha has shown ability and if finding improvement would be another one to note in here. Delta Run showed a good attitude to prevail at Plumpton but needs more now tackling hurdles.

Reached a decent level over hurdles chasing home Jonbon at Ascot and then behind the likes of Sir Gerhard and State Man in Ireland; size and scope to make a chaser and good chance here now Flame Bearer is out.
This trip will surely catch Hollow Games out so COLONEL MUSTARD looks a strong play now Flame Bearer is a non runner. He is armed with a lot of potential now sent chasing and I’m anticipating a big performance. He reached a really decent level over hurdles and could make an even better chaser so likely one to keep on side. It isn’t just a two horse race though as Heart Wood is interesting coming over from France. Carrig Sam is another one that could do well over fences but a lot like Hollow Games the trip here might just catch him out as he is almost certain to relish further. The Dasher Conway should go forward to avoid this turning tactical which is another plus for the selection.
