NAP – My best tip of the day
Newcastle 1.52 Imperial Merlin (best price 5/6)
Promising type who needed the run on debut but quickly improved to bolt up in a bumper at Sedgefield last season; perfect start hurdling bolting up by 17 lengths at Catterick; more to come so hard to oppose.
I am surprised IMPERIAL MERLIN isn’t a fair bit shorter here as the way he won on debut over hurdles was very impressive and with usual progression from that first run he will take an awful lot of beating. He goes up in trip and that should help too so hard to get away from. Supreme Gift is an Irish point winner and he opened his account at Uttoxeter last month. This is tougher but he is going the right way too so looks the danger. Macavity won a bumper at Aintree last season and left that debut over hurdles behind to finish third at Wetherby last month. If he can build on that again he will be best of the rest but a bit more needed for win purposes. I’m Dougal Rocks and Brian’s Jet likely to be left behind.

Taunton 3.08 Dan’s Chosen (best price 6/4)
Likeable type who didn’t win over hurdles but taken well to fences and built on a couple of encouraging efforts to win at Fakenham; better than what he showed at Exeter last time; this easier so hard to oppose.
I know DAN’S CHOSEN doesn’t have the most compelling profile but my hopes are on him progressing again over fences. He has taken really well to chasing and this looks a really winnable opportunity on paper. He will likely be ridden quietly and should be able to cut through the pack in the closing stages. A mark of just 105 surely hasn’t got to the bottom of him yet? I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t go close and the market is agreeing with me at the time of writing. The danger is probably Airtothethrone who ran quite well in a good race at Ludlow last time and if building on that should give the selection something to think about. Go Fox needs to improve plenty now jumping fences so is hard to recommend.
